Hey guys, I’m curious if anyone has been having similar problems, and if there is anything I can do to fix this.

Lately, I’ve been noticing some really bad throttling issues with my fps. This is due to my CPU repeatedly hitting 100% usage in game. This happens most frequently in dungeons, pve trains, and WvW zergs.

CPU: Intel Core i5-3360M dual-core, 2.80 Ghz with 8GB of RAM

From what I can tell, this CPU exceeds Arenanet’s recommended system specs, but I’m still getting the same throttling issue very often even playing on the absolute lowest settings.

Is the CPU not as good as I think it is or is anyone experiencing a similar issue?

Have you tried “unparking” your CPU cores? I have an A-10 quad core and 2 of them were “parked”. Google “coder bag Unpark CPU” app and you should get a single running .exe program that requires no installation and is very simple with the click of a button.

He has a dual core with 2 physical cores and 4 logical cores, there is no unparking to do here. His cpu is on the lower end of things perhaps, but more than enough to play GW2.

What GPU do you have in that laptop?

I agree that this i5 is performing more than well enough for this game but as for the problem you’re experiencing, I haven’t a clue what is going on unfortunately.
Although looking at the processor, being that it is one of the higher end processors in the mobile ivybridge i5 line and that it has 8 GB DDR3, I am half expecting it to have a GT650M or a GTX660M or a Radeon HD 7750M. Wonder how many things can cause this kind of issue…

The video card would have more effect on the fps .. I run a i7 920 12gb with a nvidia gtx 560 ti with everything on high and my fans don’t even go off idle speed

Some companies keep laptop prices down by putting in a low vid card .. a nvidia GT anything is about as useful as two chipmunks and a box of crayons on any resolution higher than 1280 by 800

The video card is a Nvidia NVS 5400m, 1gb.

It’s not great but it should at least be good enough to run consistently on low to medium settings. I can barley do anything without setting render on subs ample which I HATE

Do remember its a mobile CPU.
Meaning when all cores are in use the top clock speed is not the advertised ‘top’ clock speed.
The 3360m runs from 2.8ghz to 3.5ghz, but when all cores are in use its actualy only turboing up to 3.3ghz.

If ur CPU is maxing out, and its all from GW2 (check taks manager or install process explorer for more detailed info) then there’s not much to be done.

I keep having to mention to people that whilst an i5 is great and good for 95% of games out their, GW2 will show an advantage for an i7’s extra processor threads (8 over an i5’s 4).

Please do nto take what i say to mean that ur CPU is bad, its not. its just that GW2 is such an un-optimised mess that it puts to much load onto CPU’s (and ineffectivly at that) and as such these problem occur.

Get your self the following programs

Coretemp
CPU-Z
GPU-Z

Run them all while playing GW2 (Run GW2 windowed-Full screen, so you can easily bring them up while doing the following)

While Watching CPU-Z for the voltageCore, CoreTemp for the individual core Clock Ratio/Utilization% , and GPU-Z(Sensor tab) to watch the Graphics Card Load%, Adjust your game settings until your CPU is at or less then 86% per core, and your GPU Is not above 80%.

I would suggest doing this in Lion Arch when 30-50 players are nearby.

Start by setting the following options

Character Limit – Low
Character Quality – Medium
Sampling – Native
Shadows – low
Shaders – low
Post Processing – None

Then Adjust the others to get the hardware stats in a good working operation.

I had to redo this to my laptop last night(After a fresh Install to a new SSD). And It helps a TON, as LA in a busy night is very close to a Moderate (not full) Zerg in WvW.

Desktop: 4790k@4.6ghz-1.25v, AMD 295×2, 32GB 1866CL10 RAM, 850Evo 500GB SSD
Laptop: M6600 – 2720QM, AMD HD6970M, 32GB 1600CL9 RAM, Arc100 480GB SSD
