I’m upgrading both my motherboard and CPU, and I’m having a bit of trouble with the whole “BIOS” thing. Since I’m going to be removing my old motherboard do I need to search for the BIOS for my new processor? Or will the motherboard find it on its own? Can I just delete the old drivers, replace the CPU and MB pop in the CD that came with it and let it take it’s course???
If you are installing a new mother board and processor you really don’t need to worry about the BIOS, it is already in the new motherboard. BIOS isn’t stored on your hard drive it is flashed to the motherboard from my understanding.
Windows may give you some messeges when you change the mobo and CPU if you left the old hard drive drivers on there, it should change to it ok as long as you didn’t switch from Intel to AMD, or something like that it may cause some problems.
Windows may think you are installing it on a new computer though and that could cause problems, but not for sure if that will happen.

Installing a new CPU and mobo, will make the windows key deactivate in most cases, as it sees the new HW as a new computer, you will have to reactivate it by phone. The BIOS is stored in the mobo it self. Also, installing this much HW on a current OS might cause allot of problems, I have seen cases where it would not boot or BSOD and cases where nothing was wrong, best suggestion as always is a full fresh install of the OS to avoid future problems.

I’d also suggest a fresh install, back up your files though.
As far as BIOS you will only have to worry about getting the latest version for your MOBO, depending on your motherboard the process varies. Some if not most motherboards allow you to perform the update within windows, some requires you to flash from USB and so forth. It’s not that hard and there’s manuals on the manufacturers website.
Just google your model number and brand, first link should be the manufacturer. You don’t HAVE to update the BIOS, but in some cases it fixes some bluescreens and issues with the board. It can even improve the performance to some extent.
The BIOS resides on the motherboard, the CPU is just a calculator.
EDIT:
You should not use that CD, it contains the drivers along with bloatware. The drivers on the CD are also not the latest version. You should get all the drivers from the manufacturers website, do not skip one! not even that pesky network driver. I know it might just work fine without it just now, but remember! It’ll save you some headache later.
