Guild Wars 2

Hi, I used to be able to play full screen or windowed mode, but now my game only works in windowed mode. When I press alt+enter to go into full screen, the game turns black and the screen keeps flashing. I can’t alt+tab or even open the task manager. It just keeps flashing and I can’t do anything but press ctrl+alt+del and log off my user.

Does anyone know what I can do to be able to play full screen again?

If you are using Windows XP, upgrade to a more supported (by MicroSoft) OS.

Nope, I’m on Windows 7. I used to be able to switch from Full to window mode freely though

May want to see if there are any other programs running now that may be conflicting with GW2 in full screen mode that were not running in the past when full screen was working.

Another thing to look at is switching to full screen mode by selecting a full screen + resolution in your F11 > video options menu instead of using ALT+Enter. You may be encountering an issue where your desktop may be at a different or unusual resolution that GW2 is not capable of running at in full screen mode and using ALT+Enter to switch GW2 to full screen mode is trying to force it to match your desktop resolution in full screen.

May want to also note what resolution your desktop is running at and what full screen resolutions of those provided as options in GW2 are not able to be enabled.

Could also check into your video card drivers and see if you are in need of an update. Perhaps there is an issue there and an update or re-installation is required.

Can also check the integrity of your game files and repair any damaged ones found:

• Close your game completely.
• Next, make a copy of your Gw2 game shortcut and rename it “GW2 Repair” or to something that you will recognize it for being only for running a repair on your GW2 installation.
• Now, right-click this “Gw2 Repair” shortcut and click on “Properties”.
• On the “Shortcut” tab look in the “Target:” field, you should see:
  “C:\Program Files (x86)\Guild Wars 2” or wherever you have Guild Wars 2 installed.
• After the closing quotation marks in this line (or after any other arguments you may already have there) put a single space and then after that space add -repair
  It will look like this but with your GW2 install location:
  “C:\Program Files (x86)\Guild Wars 2” -repair
• Hit OK after making this change.
• Run this repair shortcut. Your game will run through a repair cycle and fix any damaged files it finds.
• After it runs through, start the game using the normal GW2 game shortcut (not the repair shortcut) and see if your game can switch to a full screen resolution properly
