Can't see foreign language characters in chatbox

I can see people typing in foreign languages in the speech bubbles above their head (Chinese specifically) but they don’t show in the chatbox, just blank spaces. Any way to fix this? I’ve tried installing the language packs but it didn’t seem to work.
