I’ve been trying to create an account today, but to no avail. I’ve tried different browsers. No matter what I do, it always bounces back and higlights the password field (“Must be at least 8 characters long and unique”), as if there was an error there, but no message is given. My passwords are way above 8 chars and are, by all means, unique. Annoyed, I’ve tried very simple ones or very kittenes, but nothing is passing through, so it must be a serverside bug?

ArenaNet uses a very interesting password checker tool. I am not sure it is unique in the online gaming world but it is rare and very powerful. It starts with a black list of 10s of millions of passwords that come from lots of different places. Any password used by a GW2 player is added so it cannot be used again. That way passwords that are already know to account thieves (from other sources) can never be used again here. It really goes a long way in making your game account secure.
Now the biggest problem with your short password is just that. It is too short. You should really use something in the neighborhood of 20+ characters. Good passwords are four or five non related words strung together. Something like “BannanaTroubleRazorDogFarming”. You can make it something easy to remember but would be very difficult to use a dictionary hack or simple password guesser to find it.

It would be extremely unlikely that someone somewhere uses my passwords and as far as I know, my passwors have never been stolen, accounts hacked, etc. I would rather lay it on some sort of false positive guess in the algorithm. Or, I have to accept the fact, that someone among GW2 players had/has the same password. The problem is, I’m not getting any information back, what’s wrong with the password, there’s no tooltip, nothing.
I’ll try some more passwords.
