Hey there. Sorry for asking this, but how do I change the install directory? Does GW2 just automatically install wherever the installer/launcher exe is located?

It’s been a long while since I last played GW2.

Running the launcher will download the necessary files to the folder it’s currently in. It will be playable, however it will not be “installed” in the traditional sense, as in shortcuts and listed under programs in the control panel.

If running Gw2Setup.exe, it will ask you where to install, though it bugs on some systems any may either do nothing or begin downloading to your %temp% folder. You can simply rename it to Gw2.exe and place it wherever you want to just have it download to its current folder.

If you’ve already installed it somewhere, you can simply move the folder and manually update any shortcuts.

Well, I used the 64-bit launcher, so it seems that, like you said, the game installed to the same directory as the launcher. But you also mentioned that it doesn’t really “install”, but rather just “extract”. Does that mean it does not modify/add registry keys?

When installing using Gw2Setup.exe, the only difference is that various shortcuts are created and it’ll add standard un/install registry information so it’ll be listed as an installed program.

Ah, I see. I wish Gw2Setup.exe was 64-bit, but I’ll stick with the Beta 64 bit launcher.

Thank you for your replies!

Gw2Setup.exe is actually just the launcher. That specific filename changes its behavior to run with the -allowinstall option. If you want a 64-bit version, simply rename Gw2-64.exe to Gw2Setup.exe, or you can just run Gw2-64.exe -allowinstall.

Assuming you’ve already installed it though, if you want to “install” it, simply rename your current GW2 folder, then run Gw2Setup.exe. When it gets to the point where it’s downloading files, simply close it. You can then put the old folder back, or move the files to the new one. You will however want to keep the launcher named Gw2.exe, rather than Gw2-64.exe.
