Character Creation destroyed my GTX 275
This sounds more like an old card with bad airflow, dust and old thermal paste that was put to stress.
Actually, I cleaned and took care of it a week before launch to make sure I would face no problems. It could run any singleplayer game or mmo at high settings without any problem. Usually barely hitting 70 degrees in temparature.
As any graphics card made the last 5-6years has thermal protection, in Nvidias case I think it was GeForce 8 series that introduced it, that automatically should cut power or throttle if the card even comes close to burning like that meaning your card must have faulted as well as software protection not kicking in and if the card was limited and it didn’t work then it sounds more like a driver problem?
Sucks that your card got toasted and I’m not saying that something in the GW2 code could have helped but the probability that there is something in the GW2 code that overrides all protections that should be there and burns cards while not affecting more than a handful of people is slim to none.
Thing is, when a card gets a few years on it, sooner or later it will give out, you can get lucky and get many years from a card or get one that’s not so good and burns up after a while, this is random and doesn’t have to have a connection to the game you just started and specially if you didn’t have problems before with the same game.
It was just your cards time sadly and as it’s a card that I’m guessing got 2years or more on it it happens =/
put a lock on your fps in settings
maybe it went all out to get as much fps as possible
i put a lock of 60 fps on my card to save it and it actually helps coz i usually get up to 80

110C? :o *insert cute kittens here*
You said you cleaned it a week before launch, but how often were you evicting the dust bunnies before that? Letting a few years of dust build up can and will cause issues over time.
My guess would be that your fan probably died. It’s highly unlikely that the card would have generated that much heat if it was functioning properly. A graphics card died on me a few years ago and that was the culprit. It was a sudden and very quick death since I was in a game at the time. Keeping it clean doesn’t guarantee that the fan will live forever.
Like I stated, any locks set by software, both Guild Wars 2 and Nvidia Panels got ignored, causing the fps skyrocket and the card burn itself. My fan was working at 90% (I always have that on 90% with MSI Afterburner to prevent the temparature from getting above 70).
Haha, I kicked the dust bunnies out once per two months, never had a single issue whatsoever with the card (never even a software related issue in any game at all which I found amazing myself).
Found an old GT9400, let’s hope I can atleast do my daily achievements with that for the next two months, that’s all I want (major achievement perfectionist here).

Hi there,
I had the exact same issue only that my card managed to survive (it got to 104 before i closed the game and maxed the cooler). It seems weird since the game was running smoothly and my temps were around 71 degrees and then suddenly the alarm i use with gpu precision set off. I really don’t think this is a coincidence, but that doesn’t matter. I just hope it doesn’t happen again.
