I am running Windows 10 Pro and the GW2 64 bit game client. I have an Intel I7 2700K processor running at 3.5 GHz and overclocked to 4.5 GHz, 16G RAM, Asus Sabertooth Motherboard, AMD Radeon R9 200 / HD 7900 Series video card with 2G of RAM, and a full tower case.

When HoT was released I went thru a series of constant crashes. I upgraded from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 Pro and installed the 64 bit game client. This took care of the crashing problems and the game seemed to play without issues.

The patch of December 1st was installed and now the CPU fan constantly cycles. I haven’t exactly timed the cycles, but I would say 5 seconds on and 10 seconds off. I am not a computer expert by any means, but I would guess that this is not a healthy situation for my CPU. I went to the control panel (F11) and selected “Best Performance” on the video window, which set all selections to “Low.” This did not stop the constant cycling of the fan.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do to remedy this problem. Again, this did not happen prior to the Dec 1st patch and remember, you are talking to an elder citizen who does not know a lot about computers, but does understand some of the technical aspects of the computer.

Thanking everyone in advance for your time and assistance with this problem.

There is your answer. Do you really wonder about overheating when you overclock
for over 1 GHz ?

EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

Clean out your computer with some compressed air. Get in/around the fans, anywhere you see dust, and ideally clean out your heatsinks as well. Additionally, make sure your computer has decent airflow in/out and isn’t crammed into some tiny little corner or shelf.

It’s fine if you’ve got an aftermarket heatsink. I’ve been running at 4.5/4.6 without issues, my friend with a 3570k does 4.8, my brother does 4.5 on his 4690k.

Thank you both for your input. I appreciate your time and assistance.

I just cleaned out my computer fans and case, however did not use a can of compressed air. I will do so tomorrow when I can get that can of air.

My only concern, if you will, is that I have had no problems since I upgraded to Windows 10 Pro and installed the 64 bit game client. Everything was running smoothly. I have cleared Verdent Brink map on 2 characters and got 1 character down to Dragon Stand. This also includes 9 other characters farming Flax on the initial portion of Verdent Brink. The fan issue started right after the Dec 1st patch was downloaded.

Thanks again for you input.

The speed of the fan will change depending on the temperature of the CPU. You may want to check that temperature (while under load) using a program such as hwmonitor. GW2 or a combination of your running processes, may simply be demanding more CPU power, which will increase the temperature. Dust, degrading thermal paste on the heat sink, unstable voltages or a dying fan are other possible problems. Other components and the room’s temperature may also be raising the overall temperature within the case.

If you simply don’t want to hear the fan speed up and down, increase the base speed. This can either be done through software or the BIOS, whichever is supported.
