I’ve been having this problem since I last tried to play months ago, and since I first started playing when the game was released. I’m not sure if it’s specific to my computer or if others have had this problem and I can’t find their solutions.

My computer shuts off (not restarts) without warning, nor does it produce any error messages on reboot, after maybe 5 to 20 minutes of gameplay. It resembles removing the power supply. It used to be 20m to an hour, but that was before I had my motherboard replaced. Twice. I don’t want to think that’s what’s causing it to get worse; I’m more inclined to believe that updates to the game since I last tried have just been more incompatible.

Hardware stuff -

Laptop model: Lenovo Y560
Processor: Intel Core i7 CPU, Q740 @ 1.73 GHz
RAM: 8.00 GB
OS: Win7 64-bit
Graphics card: AMD Radeon 6570M/5700 Series

I’ll admit I’m not too familiar with hardware specs, but as far as I know, it runs crossfire, which I’ve heard GW2 has a problem with. I’m not sure if I can turn it off or tamper with my graphics cards since they’re integrated with the laptop, and I’d like to believe the issue is software rather than hardware given the details.

So far I’ve tried to turn all the settings to their lowest, except Model textures (which I left on medium). Notably, character creation seems to shut down my computer much faster than playing the actual game, so I doubt it’s related to connectivity.

Any help would be appreciated. I already submitted a ticket to tech support, but if someone happens to have a fix for this already that would speed things up. Thanks in advance!

EDIT: I should mention I’ve all but ruled out overheating – since the problem was occurring in only 5 minutes on character creation, and my computer fan wasn’t running nearly as high as it has for other games, nor was my laptop as hot as it’s been playing those, it’s highly unlikely that’s the case. But I suppose it’s still possible, if somehow only the graphics card is heating up and it’s not radiating through the case at all…if that’s even remotely thermodynamically sound.

I would have said it was the PSU but I see your running a laptop, so Im not sure,

Do you know what the temps are like, technically it could be overheating, ive seen a system shut down like that before when the CPU overheated, but mostly when it just turns off like the way you are describing it usually relates to a power source issue.

I had a situation where my computer could play demanding games without issue for hours, but would just shut off if I ran a launcher from Blizzard (such as D3 or WoW’s), installed a very specific program (MSI Afterburner), and if I ran a specific test (Prime Numbers on PerformanceTest). No errors, messages, beeps, etc.

I later found out that for whatever reason, those 3 things would quickly throw my CPU’s temperatures up past my 65C limit for like half a second, and this caused my mobo to take protective measures and shutdown.

Still not entirely sure why that would happen, especially with some random programs.

Character Creation seems to push far more framerate than the game itself (for me anyway).

I was wondering if you guys could help me, ive been having a problem with my computer shutting down while playing gw2. It’s only been happening since the last patch so i dont know if something went wrong while downloading but the graphics in the game are all fuzzy, my monitor goes black, the sound turns into a low pitch buzzing sound and after maybe a minute or 2 my computer restarts.. I was hoping there would be a patch out Tuesday so maybe that could fix the problem but there wasn’t one

Youll want to download CoreTemp and GPU-Z. Open Coretemp and GPU-Z’s Sensor Tab, then start GW2 to the character selection screen. Run GW2 in windowed-fullscreen mode. Have both Coretemp and GPU-Z on top of GW2, and watch the Temps. when the laptop shuts down, what was the last temp you see?

One thing that happens, the Heat Transfer on the GPU’s tend to separate letting the GPU heat up considerably faster then it should. This can be fixed by taking the laptop apart and applying ceramic heatspread on the GPU/CPU.

MOST laptops will shut down if the CPU goes to 90C, and if the GPU hits 85. So if its not the CPU, im willing to bet its the GPU.

From all the cases like this ive seen (including myself) everybody seems to be using win7 64bit.
I personally have switched motherboard, PSU, GPU, CPU and everything, but ive always kept using win7 64bit.

I completely gave up on this whole issue and uninstalled the game quite a while ago now. I find it ridiculous that i would have to get new software or hardware just to play this single game while no other game has any issues.

I started having this problem in a win7 64 bit desktop moderate gaming rig after the last patch also. I mostly wvw and that’s when I have the problem. It might be a half hour in, or 3 hours in but my computer just shuts off, no reboot or anything. Everything else runs fine, even other games. I’ve cleaned everything up and did a fresh install of gw2 and it hasn’t fixed it.

I’m having the same issue as Norseman, running Win8 64bit.

I’ve tested other games that are system intesive, none of them crash my system. (Crysis, Crysis 2 for example.) Yet GW2 overheats my CPU… and i’m only in the Asura prologue.

GW2 =/= Crysis.

Crysis is GPU bound. GW2 is CPu bound. Hence why it hits the CPu harder.

This all sounds like overheating issues though it could also be potentialy an issue with old Laptop batteries and/or faulty power blocks.

Indeed, if GuildWars 2 overheats your cpu something is wrong. Zuiq, posting your specs would be a start, including what cpu cooler you use.

It was only happening with GW2, but i fixed it. My mobo decided to start OCing my CPU, my cooler couldn’t deal with it and windows errored because of that. But the crash was only happening with GW2.

Also, the Crysis series has a heavy reliance on CPU’s, that why they were one of the main CPU benchmark tests for a lot of people for a long time.

Shutting down is a good indicator that your power supply is failing – provided that this isn’t a temperature issue.

He is correct. The game or any other application since Vista cannot “shut down” a system. The Windows Operating System is structured that the applications cannot interact cause these issues.

If you look in your Windows Event Viewer, under the System Tab, you should see an error about lose of power.

The motherboard itself can also cause a shutdown if temperatures reach a certain point. The BIOSTAR A880G+ motherboard I had did just that (CPU temp hit 65C, a second later the computer powered down without warning).

Same issue here. The Game turns off my PC. AND IT’S NOT HEAT PROBLEM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And it’s not hardware problem.
I was able to run the game perfectly few months ago.
But now when i loged after few months my PC shuts down while playing the game.
I try putting all sttings to minimum still dont help.
And I see this thread all over the Internet with no real and honest answer form ArenNet.
All they say is clean your PC (… or buy new ).
At least ArenaNet can tell evry1 its not their foult and admit its mistakes.
So many ppl have this same problem and NO ANSWER FORM ANET ccccc…..
Is it harmfull for PC to turn off like that??
How is it possible?
Is it some virus maybe??

Sorce Force, instead of bumping multiple old threads about the shutting down issue (in which at least a couple was shown to be hardware issues) why dont you give some details:

Full specifications (including PS make and model)
Temperature readings idle/under load
Voltages from Bios
Troubleshooting steps already taken
Any crash logs

All these “it’s not my hardware” arguments without any sort of clarification are meaningless.

At least people will have some hard information to help with an obviously irritating problem.

You all need to create separate topics, List your system specs and give outputs from Temp readings from CPU-Z(Voltage), GPU-Z (Sensor tab for GPU Temps Both Idle and Under Load), CoreTemp (CPU per core Speed and Temps).

Stop Highjacking Threads, it makes it impossible to even start to help anyone here.

This is really frustrating!
I just got my brand new PC and it supposed to run GW2 without any porblems…
But after 5-15 minutes of playing it shuts down the computer to a… sleep-mode?
But I cannot turn it back on until I restart the power source.

My old PC (which hardly ran GW2 on low graphics) never had this problem.
Now that I finally have a PC designed for gaming, it seems to have problems with GW2?
Just my luck…

We’re taking back the computer tomorrow. I’m depressed.

I’m fairly certain that these shutdowns aren’t due to overheating (for my laptop atleast).

Same issues as both of you above me and it started happening after the first LS2 patch. First time I’ve encountered any issues with the game crashing since beta and have not changed my system specs at all. I ran all system tests and malware etc…thinking it was something on my end. I noticed it tends to happen when I go windowed and back numerous times to check dragon timer etc… Almost like it causes a bug or memory leak. As long as I stay in full screen, it’s fine.

It’s really frustrating waiting on one of the blob “world” events for 30 mins. only to crash in the middle of the fight and receive no rewards for the wait.

The other thing I’ve noticed with the player reduction settings set to Minimum…. so it’s not a slideshow, is that it will sometimes not show the mobs as well. I get hit or die and can’t see what hit me until it shows up at the last second or fades in and out. I can see some players, the boss(usually) and a sea of green names fine. It tends to be the trash mobs that don’t show.

Download speccy or something similar and check your cpu temps. This current patch raises my cpu temp by 40 degrees celcius. I had to blow out my heat sink and reseat it to get the game to stop throttling, because the latest patch pushed my system up to 102C, which is 20+ degrees hotter than is safe for the chip.
