Computer shuts off when loading into GW2
This began out of NOWHERE yesterday after having already been on the game. I ran the launcher, hit play and it ALMOST loads character selection before my computer just… turns off.
I did some maintenance, made sure I had stable drivers, keep the tower cool. I ran -repair tagline and also deleted local .dat on different occassions. The first time aftering deleting the .dat file it ran for maybe 10 minutes. I went right back to crashing (comp turning off, without warning). Attempted the same thing again, and it still crashes despite deleting the .dat file.
I cleaned out the case, heatsink, GPU, CPU, PSU fans with compressed air. I am seriously at my wit’s end with what’s going on. Please help me.
I suffer the same problem too. After i re-installed os and driver and run hardware diagnosis(no error appeared), the problem still persists. My computer shuts off and reset botton no work but fan still operate after playing game 10~20 minites. I need to stop fan by cutting off power, then restart my computer. the attached file is the test report that gameadvisor program generated.
dear Tech support team, please help me to solve the issue, thanks a lot.
Anyone else have this issue and have a fix? It worked for a couple log in attempts after deleting .dat file and running -repair command line. Now I’m right back to crashing.
This is a symptom of either an overheating system going in to thermal shutdown mode, or a power supply unit that is failing. I strongly suggest you check your CPU temps, if the CPU is not overheating then your PSU is on its last legs and needs replacing as soon as possible.
Just to be clear for others reading; A game will NEVER make your system power down completely. Even a BSOD event will result in an automatic system restart. If your system powers off, its a hardware fault that needs resolving or it could render the system unusable.
If a CPU overheats to much for to long it will stop working competely and “fry” itself. If a PSU goes bad and stops working properly it can fry the entire system when it gives up completely.
Best of luck.
Have you added or replaced any recent new components to your chassis lately that uses power? If not, you may need to run a system diagnostic of some sort (forget the windows equivalents). This could be an overheating CPU (or system overall if fans aren’t working or not enough) as mentioned, bad ram, sometimes a bad hard drive could cause similar issues, faulty motherboard, or even a bad power supply as mentioned.
Newer, stronger, or excessive components tend to use more power requiring a heavier duty power supply. If you’ve recently upgraded any components or added something new (even adding one fan can overload an already taxed psu), you may need to upgrade to a higher wattage power supply unit. GW2 uses more systems resources than most games or programs and therefore needs more power to keep this excessive use cool.
Follow Lex’s instructions. Check your unit temps while idle and while taxed, also, make sure the cooling fan on your processor is working.

This has been a periodic problem for my computer since day one. But, since the last patch, it’s happening much more frequently. I’m thinking they made a change that’s stressing whatever leads to this.
Turning the graphic settings to the bottom helps – I’ll sometimes do that for a long instance.
This is the only game this computer has had a problem with. If you poke around you’ll find this isn’t an uncommon issue folks have with this game. I bet this guy/gal isn’t dealing with a recent failure/change – this game just does unfriendly things. And it got more unfriendly.
Mr pants, sounds like you’re overheating. You should definitely give the inside of your comp a good thorough cleaning, including fans and heat sinks.
Make sure you’re monitoring your CPU and gpu temps. Get a baseline for when the system is idle, get one on a game or app that taxes it a bit (for a midrange reading), then try it with gw2. Gw2 taxes the CPU more so than it does the gpu, but it is just hard on system resources in general… Kind of a selfish program lol, but seriously, it really uses as much of a system as it can.
FYI, systems shut down instantly if they detect that they are getting too hot to prevent damage to components. Many times, you will experience lag spikes or frame rate dips prior to a shut down, but not always.

Like I said – it use to be only on occasional thing. It got much worse since the last patch. I figure that’s a useful data point for folks suddenly dealing with this.
I’m sure my computer is due for some cleaning… and maybe some additional fans…
I had a similar (my computer would restart with no BSOD) problem and it was the power supply. Like others, it only happened with GW2. So I was like, how can that be the power supply?
Well GW2 doesn’t directly cause it but it must stress your system majorly, thus causing higher power draw, thus causing your power supply to cause a shut down.
As I mentioned in my first post bad components or an underpowered system are the typical culprits for sudden system shutdowns, right up there with overheating.
Gw2 is a resource hog, more so than most other games and applications. If something is faulty or poorly ventilated or not powered enough, this game will find it for you.
Mr pants, you should try troubleshooting the problem via the methods above as well, once you rule out overheating (despite the only occasional expression of this problem), then you can narrow it down to a hardware malfunction. But heat is the easiest and cheapest fix. Also, some say re-applying thermal paste to processors helps too… After a good cleaning.
There are a lot of threads about this lately.
Mother boards can shut down a computer if something overheats, but it usually has a way of indicating it has done so. So if you don’t see or hear anything from the mother board then it is probably the power supply. If hardware being maxed out takes to much from a power supply, it will shut off. I wouldn’t be surprised if you have a video card to big for your PSU. I often warn people looking to upgrade to a performance video card that they need to ditch there craptastic 350 watt PSU too.
I ended up taking it in to a repair shop because even with my knowledge I couldn’t figure ot out. Temps run fine per MSI, no danger of overheating. Ranprime95 for 12hrs without issue. When I dropped it off the firs thing he did was check my psu with a meter and it read fine. I was told to come pick it up as it was rtg and didn’t give the tech any trouble running GW2.
I was told to test it. As soon as I did, it crashed. So we began testing the memory sticks and slots, and we still had crashing problems. On a whim, we tested out another gpu (Radeon 7750 I think) and it didn’t crash after fiddling with it quite a bit. So we are thinking we have the problem solved but I’m still apprehensive that it’s not the gpu and that was a fluke.
Anyway. I planned for a completely new gaming rig next spring and don’t want to invest a ton of money into it to replace the gpu. I need something that can handle GW2 and that is budget friendly. I’m thinking about the xfx ati radeon 6770 1gb to tie me over until my major upgrade. Thoughts?
Also, I’m no dummy. My psu is a 650w.
You never did actually tell us your specs, so we had no idea what you were working with. We gave suggestions based on symptoms. That being said, it could very possibly be the GPU, others have had similar experiences, and especially if you’ve tried testing everything else. If you’re still unconvinced, try different driver versions and/or review the submit a ticket sticky and open one for pro Anet help. Then follow up back here with what they came up with.
Same issue here. The Game turns off my PC. AND IT’S NOT HEAT PROBLEM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And it’s not hardware problem.
I was able to run the game perfectly few months ago.
But now when i loged after few months my PC shuts down while playing the game.
I try putting all sttings to minimum still dont help.
And I see this thread all over the Internet with no real and honest answer form ArenNet.
All they say is clean your PC (… or buy new ).
At least ArenaNet can tell evry1 its not their foult and admit its mistakes.
So many ppl have this same problem and NO ANSWER FORM ANET ccccc…..
Is it harmfull for PC to turn off like that??
How is it possible?
Is it some virus maybe??
Telll mEEEEEEE I wanna knoww !!!!!
Its not a bug, its not a virus. Its a system fault. You wont get an answer or a patch from anet because there is nothing they can do about it. You can keep blaming the game and getting the shutdowns or you can actually read what I wrote earlier and take steps to fix the flaw with your system.
Either its overheating, undervolting from insufficient wattage, or the PSU is dying.

You may need to re apply new heat sink compound to your cpu, over time the compound will dry out and lose efectiveness especially if your CPU runs hot a lot. You will need to clean the top of the CPU and the heat sink do not remove the CPU from the socket. There are many YouTube videos on how to do this.
put the correct term in but not everyone has kittens

hey aglow, I hope this doesn’t sound silly, but have you tried to plug you psu/computer in a different wall socket?
I used to have this crazy tyan dual socket mobo and a decent psu (thermaltake tough-something…i think) anyway If i plugged it in the same wall outlet as the monitor it gave me problems, but if i ran an extension cord and plugged it in a different wall outlet the problems went away.
If you have this issue you need to report on 2 things;
1. BIOS error codes, this will tell us if your BIOS initiated the shutdown of your system, which GENERALLY will report that back to windows and you’ll see an event in the logs about the reason. But they are all recorded in your BIOS’s Logs too.
2. Driver fault under BIOS. If your GPU over heated and caused a BIOS Fault. that could shut down your system too. If its software related (IE Driver) it will be in Event Viewer under control panel>Admin Tools>Eventviewer>Windows Logs>System. Look for Errors (Red X) that partain to faulting Modules, system shutdown, or kernel Fault (BSOD).

Sounds like a psu failure.
If this happens when you run GW2 first thing as you start your computer, it is probable that your PSU is drawing power for GW2. Since it’s the first thing you did it demonstrates that a rise in temperature is not an issue since it has not been running; you can rule out overheating.
Replace PSU with something more powerful. Worse comes to worse, you continue to try and play GW2 and it blows a capacitor (did this trying to play Crysis on an old machine). You know that this is the culprit when your computer fails to boot/start up. The smell of burning plastic and a melted capacitor is evidence of this.
