Hello all,
I have not been playing GW2 for about a month. I started playing another game that uses DirectX11 (don’t know if that has anything to do with it). I switch back this last week of February 2014. After playing for about 20 minutes the computer completely shuts down. Total memory dump.
It’s has done this 3 times in a row while playing GW2 and nothing else.
I have updated my GPU to the AMD/ATI beta 14.13 to see if it helped. Nope.
Anti-aliasing is on “use application settings”.
Any ideas?
AMD Phenom II x6 processor 64 bit
AMD Radeon HD 6800 GPU
Think I’m running 700W through a Cougar that’s worked for about 3 years.

Completely shutting down usually indicates a power supply that is failing.

I don’t doubt it could be that but why would it only do it when I’m playing GW2?

GW2 pushes your system harder than most games. Another possibility is a temperature issue. You can check your temps with Hardware Monitor found here:

The review of that power supply shows that the voltages can drop out of spec – which could indeed cause a shutdown:

Get a good replacement unit from a reputable brand ASAP. Further use of that psu could result in more damage than just shutdowns.
When my PSU failed it showed the no signal on the monitor, but it failed to the point where it wouldn’t show anything else, no signal right after turning it on. It could be indeed that your PSU is coming apart and it now fails only when it’s pushed to the extreme.
If you can borrow a working one from a friend or somewhere test it out with that. You could maybe do a CPU and a GPU stress test at the same time to see if that crashes your system as well (which might not be the best of the ideas as if your PSU really is broken, this could further facilitate it’s death and it could create a current spike frying all of your hardware). Or you could underclock both of them a bit to force it running at a lower wattage and see if the issue persists. If it doesn’t, run like mad to the nearest hardware store.

Thanks.
I might just have to break down myself and buy a new PSU.
I’m running 850W. And Cougar’s are a German product. I’m not German but I think they are fairly reputable. The website says they last from 3-5 years though. And, I bought in 2011.
