“connection error detected. retrying…”

When the update happened my game never restarted, and didn’t for a few other people. Since then trying to restart the game I just get the message above. What can I do?

Well. I right clicked the GW2 icon on desktop, went to properties and deleted " -assetsrv 62.154.232.187:80" from the target. Solved.

Yeah, getting rid of all that stuff at the end worked for me as well

Spent ~30 minutes trying to figure out the issue and deleting -assetsrv 62.154.232.187:80 worked for me as well (hopefully we don’t have issues with the last 2-3 files again)

This worked for me, thanks! (Crossing fingers that the problem the additional text solved doesn’t recur.)

That is a modification done by the user. The purpose of adding that command to your shortcut is to forcibly use a different server to patch the game. The problem however, as seen in this thread, is that the IP of those servers will change.

If you’ve never modified your shortcut to add that command and you haven’t changed your hosts file (c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts), then you don’t need to delete anything since you haven’t changed anything.

If you’d like to try a different asset server however, you can add that option to the target of your shortcut:

"C:\Example\Gw2.exe" -assetsrv 174.35.52.71

Still not working for me.

Open notepad, then open the file “c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts” and ensure that you haven’t previously modified a GW2 related IP. You’ll need to open notepad as an administrator if you need to edit this file.

If set, remove the -assetsrv option from your shortcut.

Ensure that GW2 isn’t being blocking by your firewall.

Setup Google’s DNS https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using. After doing that, press WindowsKey+R and open cmd. Enter the command:
ipconfig /flushdns

Try running the launcher. If it still fails:

Search your start menu for cmd, right click cmd.exe and run it as an administrator. Enter the following command, then reboot:

netsh winsock reset

This will cause Winsock to reset back to its original state, which other programs may hook into and become corrupt, causing problems. If this was the problem however and the program that was causing the problem is still active, it will likely re-insert itself when you reboot. Try running the launcher. If it still fails, run the above command again, but instead of rebooting, proceed below:

Press WindowsKey+R and open msconfig. Under the boot tab, check safe boot and select networking under that. Click OK and reboot. To undo this, uncheck safe boot. Your computer will start in safe mode with most non-essential programs disabled. You will not be able to play the game, however the launcher will still function.

If the launcher worked under safe mode, open msconfig and uncheck safe boot. Under the services tab, check “hide all Microsoft…” then click disable all. Under the startup tab, click disable all. Click OK and reboot. This will cause most non-Microsoft related software to be disabled, though some essential software, such as an anti-virus, may continue to run. Try running the launcher again. If it works, you’ll need to go back to msconfig and re-enable them a bit at a time until it no longer functions to determine which programs is causing the problem.

If the launcher didn’t work under safe mode, I’d assume a networking problem. Try setting up a VPN and using the launcher through that. Try a free trial of WTFast or something. If it works, your ISP is likely the problem.

I’ve been unable to update or login since the patch. I have no server assignment on my shortcut, just straight gw2.exe. Launches, then starts to dl at about 5kb sec then stalls out and gains a connectivity problem. This has been ongoing since yesterday. All my other online games (WOW, SWTOR, STO, etc.) are fine and play smoothly. Therefore, I can only conclude that the problem is on Guild Wars’ end.

Hope this gets fixed soon.

Got my computer to get passed the launcher by specifying the asset server IP, but have failed to get my wifes computer past the launcher. Really love the game but it has been unplayable for over a week. About to give up on GW2
