Problem: Game will freeze up every 5-10 minutes, no pattern, just randomly. Video will freeze, the Guild Wars client will grey out and a box will display “not responding”. Audio such as music, sound effects, battles, etc around me will continue as normal. No specific action, event, character, etc triggers it. Occasionally the NVidia kernel will recover and display a message that is has crashed and recovered, other times, nothing.
Fullscreen: Often I will need to reset the pc as the screen will black out.
Windowed / Windowed fullscreen: Client freezes and I can end task it. See above under ‘Problem’ for details.
Things I have tried:
- Downgraded Nvidia drivers to previous generations, spanning an entire year of releases.
- Setting Nvidia performance to max, instead of ‘adaptive’
- Played with Guild Wars Graphics settings, FXAA, Blurs, Presets, render samplings, etc.
- SFC on my windows, no errors
- check disk on my drive, no errors
- HD Tune sector drive and general health checks, no errors
- Reformatted PC, fresh install
- Disabling all graphical effects for Windows
- Different levels of Page File / Swap capacity
- Disabling one of my two monitors, only using monitor 1, only monitor 2.
- Underclocking my memory, altering RAM timings, altering various system voltages
- Disabling any overclocks, including Speed Step auto overclock.
- Running GW2 off a flash drive
- Repairing the gw2.dat file
- Defragging the gw2.dat file
- Deleting and re-downloading the gw2.dat file
Things yet to try:
- Running a different OS
- Running the game directly off the integrated graphics
- using generic mouse and keyboard
- Running gw2 in a Virtual Machine or in a sandbox
- Giving up and playing other games.
No other games, programs, apps, etc cause any issues with my machine. Every other.. everything, runs fine. Games like Borderlands 2, to Alien Isolation on MAX no issues. Old games like Deus Ex, Quake, Minecraft, no issues. Photoshop, Premier, Youtube, Blue-Ray rip movies, no issue. Not a kitten hicup anywhere from anything that would lead me to believe my pc is having a problem. I only recently came back after a 2 year break and the pc I used to use has long been replaced.
I am at my wits end. Is there a program I can attach to my kernel drivers or directly to GW2.exe to capture any information that may help me find a solution? I’ve tried a user-level full memory dump but the dmp file gives absolutely bugger-all useful info.
Attached is a DXDIAG report. Anet, please help.
Edit: I can reliably reproduce the issue and I have made a quick screenshot guide for others experiencing this problem to try. if it crashes you to, we might be able to help Anet squash this quicker.

Can you please list the driver versions you are running for:
Chipset
Sound
Video
as well as maybe a screenshot of your graphics settings in GW2. I would be eternally grateful.
Well I don’t think that will solve I already contacted support for the same problem and i have all driver(updated too), support made a lot of test with me and found no problem on my side so as far as i can tell the problem is still on their side.

Same problem Grey screen and computer crashes with static noise. Or HDD crashes I’ve ordered a new PSU which should be here in a week so i can swap it out and test it. Alternating my RAM hasn’t seemed to help so I dont know where the problem is exactly.
Support has tried to help and I’m waiting on response after the last try didn’t help.
Other games and stress tests seem stable and work just fine.

I have found a way to reliably reproduce my issue. I have recorded 20+ videos of the crash happening in almost the exact same spot in the exact same manner. I will upload and post links in the coming days. Videos will include a detailed listing of gpu/cpu speeds and temps at the time of crash, as well as graphics settings in gw, etc.
Edit: here is a screenshot walkthrough i’d like others experiencing the same issue to try. Post your results, perhaps there is a similarity.

First of all, APOLOGIES for the length of the following post.
———————————————————————————————————————————————————
SYMPTOMS
I have the exact same problem as you. Identical symptoms. To add to your description, here’s what happens when I’m playing WINDOWED or WINDOWED FULLSCREEN:
Case 1) Sometimes the video freezes and then recovers after a few seconds. Sometimes this happens multiple times in succession; the video freezes, recovers for a split second, freezes again, recovers, etc. After that, the game could completely recover if I’m lucky. If so, I go on playing as usual.
Case 2) Other times, the video completely freezes but the audio continues. When I press skill keys, it seems that the game still responds to input because I can hear my abilities being casted, but the audio seems delayed. When I crash during a fight in the Silverwastes, for instance, the video freezes; the audio is distorted for a second or two and then recovers. I can hear my abilities casting and mordrems tearing me apart as I spam my skill keys at the frozen screen. Eventually, the “dead” soundtrack plays when my character is defeated.
Case 3) A third and final type of crash involves the screen turning off for a few seconds and then coming back on. After the screen comes back, the video could either fully freeze or recover.
As you described, adding to the mix is the occasional Nvidia kernal driver recovery pop-up message. This can pop up after any of the above crash scenarios. This is GUARANTEED to pop up in Case 3).
In windowed mode, the task manager can reliably terminate GW2 after it freezes. Here are some differences when playing FULLSCREEN (not windowed):
Fullscreen crashes can affect the entire system. Video becomes extremely laggy, as if the refresh rate becomes ONE frame per FEW seconds. I can manage to close GW2 in the task manager, but video continues to lag even with the game closed. I believe the underlying processes are operating at normal speed. I can spam a number of keyboard shortcuts (such as alt-f4) and all desktop applications would be closed when the video catches up after a few seconds. If I press the power button to shut down, the computer shuts down at normal speed, but the video remains laggy until I reboot the system.
———————————————————————————————————————————————————
THINGS I’VE TRIED
As your screenshots suggest, turning down some of the settings seem to delay the crash, especially the character models and the shader. However, the crash eventually occurs, even when all settings are set to their lowest. For me, crashes occur the most in the Silverwastes. Haven’t been able to complete a single breach since this problem began in early January.
I have also attempted most of the items on the list of things you tried. No improvement at all. This issue also comes up ONLY in GW2; I haven’t experienced similar crashes with any other games I am playing. I clean re-installed my OS, which didn’t help either. Btw, which OS are you running? I’m using Windows 8.1 64-bit.
My rig:
Motherboard: ASUS Z87I-DELUXE
CPU: Intel i7-4770k
RAM: G-Skill 16GB 1866mhz
GPU: EVGA GTX780 Superclocked ACX
SSDs: Samsung 840 pro 256 GB (System drive) and Samsung 840 EVO 250 GB (GW2 is installed here)
NVIDIA drivers tested:
347.52
345.20
344.75
341.44
344.11
334.89
None of the above solved the issue. All clean installs with all nvidia files removed and registry cleaned.
OS tested:
Windows 8.1
Windows 8
Issues arise on both OS.
Other games I have tested:
Battlefield 4
Skyrim
League of Legends
Far Cry 3
Civ 5
None of these games have problems.
Things I have tried:
- Repair the game with “-repair”
- Deleting local.dat
- Redownload the entire game
- Clean OS installation
- Updating/rolling back GPU drivers
- Nvidia control panel: prefer max preformance instead of adaptive
- Tinkering with internal game settings
- Stress testing my CPU and GPU and checking my SSDs
- Using only one monitor; tried 1440p, 1080p, and smaller windowed sizes
- Disabling CPU overclock and underclocking my GPU
- Set system power options to performance and disabling sleep for system, monitor and hard drives
———————————————————————————————————————————————————
The problem has persisted for over two months for me now. I love GW2 and I would’ve given up at this point if it were any other game. I’m afraid our problem may be not widespread enough and require too complex of a solution for anet to address this specifically.
Apologies for this TL;DR post. I’ve held off posting about this till now because only a lengthy explanation can describe the extent of the problem and our attempts at solving it. Computer gods from Anet and the internetz, please help us out.

Get the error to happen and then check your system event log for errors or warnings. These can often point you to the system component that is causing the failure.

LOLer.2980 did you try the screenshot walkthrough i made? Can you get the crash to happen at around the same area?
Basically through a week of petitions, Anet says its my machine at fault here and if there is in fact an issue common amongst several players, it proves that it is on their end.
Also, i have 2 videos uploaded: Both show case the crash and how to replicate it.
(edited by danburridge.3602)
danburridge.3602 I will try your locations tomorrow and get back to ya. Will see if I can post a few videos to complement your case.

The logfile is located @ C:\users\%username%\appdata\roaming\guild wars 2 just copy paste that into your explorer URL bar or navigate there yourself.
the logfile itself is called ArenaNet.log and houses any errors the program could record before dying. I’ve noticed the same errors each time a crash occurs…
- Couldn’t find projectile effect for skill ‘Aw3PF.xcnwE’
- Debug token ‘0×266fa’: Lightning ran out of space for new bolts.
- Texture missing mip chain: 0×0265ff (the memory address is different each time but the same wording is found)
7 months ago, several others posted about the same crashing:
8 months ago, a reddit post was made on the same subject, explaining what may be happening:
http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/29eddy/wonders_of_being_a_coder_game_crashed_with_an/
From this post, my theory of it being a character model issue may be correct. With so many things to load in these days “wings, boomboxes, glowing armor pieces, etc” no wonder the game dies. They are likely throwing stuff into the gem shop faster than the testers can identify the problems they cause.
So what may be happening is: the game may be loading the graphics and trying to apply them before loading the model itself, which the graphics card drivers poop themselves over. a TDR is thrown and blamo, game crash.
To test this i had all my settings turned down super low, as low as they can go and I stood in Lions Arch. I then maxed out every texture setting but the Character Model Quality and Character Model Limit. No crashes occurred. I then upped the character model limit and model quality to max, I Immediately crashed, recovered, then crashed again and had to end task.
having model quality and limits low seems to keep my machine from crashing.
(edited by danburridge.3602)
danburridge.3602 Tried the locations in your videos, they did not crash my game. I crash a LOT more in the silverwastes than any other map. This may have something to do with your hypothesis on the new textures. I looked through my ArenaNet.log and also found:
Debug token ‘0×266fa’: Lightning ran out of space for new bolts.
Texture missing mip chain: 0×06703d
Brother Grimm.5176 Every crash generates the following Warning log in the Event Viewer:
Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.
When I had more recent drivers, the log used to display the version number. I am using 334.89 right now because this version seems the most stable for me on GW2.
No other error logs seems to be generated after a crash.
(edited by LOLer.2980)
I SEEM TO HAVE SOLVED MY ISSUE. Although I claimed to have underclocked my GPU, I didn’t underclock it enough. I have the GTX 780 Superclocked from EVGA. The problem is that the card was factory overclocked. Once I used EVGA PrecisionX to turned the GPU clock ALL the way down to the reference GPU clock speed, voila – no more crashes. At least not for the past few hours. I will report back if crashes occur again, but so far everything is running smoothly.
I tried underclocking too didn’t helped me but now found this
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/support/Random-Crashing-Freezing-related-to-sound
I was just curious and tryed out what Ashley Segovia Technical Support tells.
Example: “C:\Games\Guild Wars 2\GW2.exe” -nosound
Testing it for some time now and since then no crash so it seems something is not right in the coding for sound cards couse my card isn’t defective (2 local specialist already looked into my pc and all in good shape) will test for a few more days then will contact support about it.
Try it out guys perhaps u are in the same shoe.
Good luck

LOLer: Overclocking is the single biggest issue for texture based failures, it happens in all games as overclocking increases the amount of memory write failures on the card. If your card is overclocked by default and you’re crashing all the time, bring it back to factory reference levels.
Lahsihl: Your sound card is also a unique piece of hardware and gw2 knows this, that’s why there’s a slider for Quality or Stability, use it. Your card may not be able to handle all the channels gw2 wants to use simultaneously or it may be too slow putting the sound files in it’s buffer.
Lil Puppy.5216 thy for the reply but already tryed that too. all with low fastest stable really everything and still no luck with those specifications ingame. Even done what support asked, win reinstall, driver update clean install, ram test etc nothin helped.
And i had no problem when i started to play GW2 only after Point of no Return came in and as said my PC was checked twice so couldn’t be a problem on my side.
But perhaps it helps someone to move the sliders to stable but i think most ppl who have such problems already tryed that too.

This is client related and it doesn’t matter how many times someone thinks their computer isn’t the problem. There is most likely another piece of software tying up your sound card. Most of the time this next step is unnecessary, but I want you to try it and see if it works.
1. Uninstall your sound card drivers and any sound card related software (back up whatever you need). Make sure you have the newest ones to reinstall later or make a system restore point manually before and after.
2. Restart your computer.
3. Play GW2 normally (without the -nosound)
Windows should use it’s system drivers for sound. Did it work? If it did, either the drivers are bad or the software is bad.
Well I already done that, let windows install driver, used the motherboards disc driver install, downloaded driver from motherboard website and from soundcard website nothin helped the only thing with I wont crash is the -nosound option.

Ok, just going to go over a few things then since this isn’t your thread and there’s no info about what steps you went through.
1. Did you try -repair?
2. Have you tried to reinstall gw2?
a. Delete gw2.exe, download the client from the account page on guildwars2.com
b. Delete all in guildwars2 folder and start over from client from scratch
3. What are you computer specs and chipsets (including who makes your sound chip)
4. Have you tried adjusting the volume settings for each of the things in gw2 yet? one of them might give us a clue as to what is causing the crash, there could be corrupted files that the -repair isn’t fixing that are causing this.
Worst case scenario, play your own music while gaming.
Yes I already done everything u asked several times and nothing helped even support couldn’t help with these questions and advices.
My Pc spec:
Win7 64bit
AMD Athlon II X2 3,4ghz
8gb ram
Nvidia Geforce gtx 750 2gb
Realtek® ALC887 8-Channel High Definition Audio
Im having the same problem with the same symptoms. Random freezing/crashing, sound keeps playing normally (or looping). I have to alt-tab, or CTRL-alt-del to open the task manager, where it shows GW2.exe is not responding. This is a relatively recent problem, pretty sure it wasn’t happening a couple of months ago.
I would say its a problem always happening again after a fix. BTW just fully reinstalled the game and the first thing when i was at char select gw2 error report about corrupted files lool. So I still think that client is still the black sheep here, making some real mess.
This happens for tons of configurations, varying from low end to extremely high end machines. This happens also for both radeon and geforce based machines.
This also happens at various points in the game and the crash reports indicate different types of issues from audio through multi processor machines ending in graphic issues.
The pattern (at least it seem to be the common to all problems) is that the game is trying to invoke a native os operation (such as calling an audio effect, or trying to render a texture), which the os doesn’t support (due to different hardware manufacturer implementation or whatever), and the game ‘assumes’ the request will be performed, and tries to keep running with the called functionality which doesn’t exist at the time of the crash.
At that point, the hardware is failing, and the result is the crashes.
It has nothing to do with the machine’s configuration or drivers.
It is a matter of Anet updating the game, the client so it will still be able to run even when the operation can’t complete.

Reminds me of the problems i had with NVidia driver when i played Age of Conan
and RoM and had bluescreens all the time.
Years later (when i already used ATI again) i read in the Lotro forums that NVidia
often uses the same memory addresses than SB-Live soundcards and thats were
maybe the reasons for all my problems.
So yeah .. try to play without sound .. maybe even disable it in your Bios if yoi use
onboard, or remove your soundcard, and test it.
i face the same problem too, when i am using windowed mode, the screen grey out and occasionally the nvida kernel will recover. When in full screen mode, the screen will just turn black and i have to force restart my computer.
i am currently running on titan x
any fix to the problem yet?
just like LOLer.2980 has mentioned.
Previously, my titan x was overclocked. I restored it back to default clock speed. It seems like the game is running smooth for the past few hours, and haven’t experienced any black screen crash so far. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I’m glad I’m not the only one having this problem. I just hope it gets fixed.
Same issue everyone else is having, the client will randomly freeze up as if the video is trying to reset and I’ll be forced to end task the client due to not responding. I’ve done most of the above fixes trying to pinpoint the problem without much success.
Running Windows 8.1 with a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660.

No you are not the only one. The Guild Wars 2 client has had this issue for a very long time and they have never ever ever fixed it. Thankfully there are a few self help threads like this one. This isn’t even close to the first on this topic, and it won’t be the last, I fear.

I also had the same issue with my former laptop thinking it was maybe the connection and/or driver or tired graphics card (and yes turning down the graphic settings seem to help, but only temporarily); it did seem random. after having a professional diagnose my machine, nothing wrong was found.
Now having the same freezing issue (game completely stops, sound stays, unable to do anything else on the desktop including shutting it down in task manager, the only thing to work is restarting) and I just purchased a brand new MSI machine last week, and freezing game started today.
So this problem has recently started on my game. I currently have an engineer stuck at the bank in Divinities Reach. He crashed when I turned and looked at the vendor now any move I make with him crashes my whole computer to a grey/pink-grey screen. For the last week though I’ve been getting crashes to grey/pink/green screens where I have to hold the power button on my comp to shutdown. Sometimes my computer will recover but, when it does, it seems to be running harder and I have no sound at all on anything. I have no idea what to do I jut want to play GW2 with my friends.

Most of the crashes reported in this thread are GPU related. I had the exact same issue when I overclocked my GPU. PC would crash to a gray screen whenever I alt+tabbed to another window. I set my GPU clock speed back to factory, and it immediately fixed the problem.

I did not overlocked anything either gpu either cpu, and moreover other games freezes too.
Appreciate the fact this thread is now over a year old but it’s still relevant.
This happened a lot on my old rig (which was long overdue for replacement – o/c’d CPU, no GPU o/c). I now have a new (ish) rig since May this year. Specs in the sig. I still get this issue (o/c’d CPU and GPU).
I had been told it was the PSU as I’d been getting kernel power errors. Both PC’s had a 1KW brick. I had been told it was the RAM – 6GB on the previous rig (Win7 Pro 64bit) and now 16GB as shown below.
Coincidence or a fault of the game?
I’m of the opinion my PC is more than capable of running this game. If anyone has any pointers, I’d gladly hear them!
Thanks.
For any future players with this issue:
I just finished a lengthy conversation with various Anet GMs about this issue.
Turns out HWinfo64 running in the background caused the freezing issue for me.
This means that potentially any software that does hardware polling could cause it.
MSI Afterburner/Riva Tuner was fine for me but i can imagine this causing the problem on other systems too. as well as any other programs that give live readouts about hardware information.

Same problem for me. Everything was playing fine until I downloaded and installed HoT. A few minutes in it crashed and has been crashing between log in and 2 hours. I’ve been working with tech support for a few days now and I’ve tried several things that have been tried here. It’s very frustrating.
