I am crashing randomly, between 15 minutes to hours apart. Either my screen freezes, or the game goes to windows. Most notably it happened this weekend just before the final blows killed the boss of CoF P3 on the 3rd try. If the screen freezes, all i can do is ctrl/alt/del and windows states GW2 is not responding. when it crashes i send an error report to Anet. this is what it says.

Technical Support

Hi Erthrak – It’s difficult to say what exactly is helpful information from the ArenaNet.log files. Generally the most important information will be displayed in what you have just provided, however, in this case it just isn’t enough and so we’ll need to look through the whole thing. If you want to provide the whole log file, you can do that by clicking *More posting & formatting options…"

The log files may indicate what exactly is causing the crash or it will show us if you’re getting any CRC errors or if a simple repair is necessary to resolve the issue.

I am having the same problem. I have run the “repair” option over 10 times and it does not help at all. It happens on all characters and at completely random locations doing completely different actions. There is one file that comes up on the error report more often than the others and it’s somthing like “main clip”, but there are many other files that are listed each time I crash. I will post a full log next time it happens but I’d also like to mention that the game now forces you to repair your files after a crash now which means that every time I crash, I cannot play for another 15-20min. This feature needs to be taken away since it is not actually fixing the issue.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Command_line_arguments#-repair read that

also running a chkdsk /f on each of your hard drives wouldnt be a bad idea.

http://www.howtogeek.com/wiki/Chkdsk

also run ccleaner on the system, clean files and registry this can help alot of problems, even if it dosnt fix it, it will clean out alot of crap and in many years using ccleaner, its never caused a problem on any of the thousands of systems i have installed it on.

I’m having screen freezes and then the screen goes black. If I open up task manager it will show two listings for the gw2 client. This has only been going on for a couple days. This happens at random times into the game but usually after about 20-30 minutes.

I have check all drivers and everything is up to date. I’m not sure what log people are talking about in here if you could tell me where it is I will post it. Iam going to put in a support ticket now.

I tried to use the cmd line augments but someone will have to be more specific about what to type in because “…\Guild Wars 2\Gw2.exe” -repair did not work.

It’s not really a cmd line argument. It’s added to the end of the shortcut. If you look at the picture I’ve attached, you see where to input it. After the quotes, leave a space and then put “-repair” (without the quotes!!!!) and hit apply and run the shortcut after that.

Thanks for your help Ryokuro.

And it just does something it itself? I started the client and was expecting some dialog box or something to pop up saying it was repairing files.

That I could not tell you as I haven’t needed to ever run it myself.

funny anet calls it a command line arguement….
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Command_line_arguments
read the url and page title…..adding it to the short cut dosnt remove the fact its a command line arguement, all the short cut really is, is a way to launch without opening a command line window or going in to find the exe directly…..

Everyone is having this issue on Eu servers for Desolation, must be something they did on the update yesterday. Lets hope they resolve it soon. They’re going to loose a lot of business with this.

My problems started to appear after the last patch. First the update went only half way and the Kb’s started to drop until they reached 0.00kb’s! I had to reset the whole PC in order to get the update fully downloaded… After that every time when I log in to the game my PC freezes on intervals between 5 & 10 mins ;( Sometimes my sound start to fade and few seconds after that the game freezes! Of course I have to shut down the process from the task manager… but sometimes that don’t work either because after that when I try to start the game nothing happen… and I need to reset the whole PC again! My drivers are up to date… and I never had such issues before the last patch… So it must be that!!!

I did check the disks for errors and also I made defragmentation as well!
I cannot give you any Crash Logs because I do not have any… the game just freezes as simple as that!!!

Oh… and I did try to repair the files of the game…. that did not solve the problem at all!!!

I see that many people have this problems and they are after the last patch… because before that the game was working fine!

I’ve tried to play now… and the problems seems to get really different!!!

My game freezes after few minutes… but the sound goes on, I try to open task manager but it does not show… if I click back on GW2 icon at the taskbar I get back to the game and the task manager shows up! Okay now… the game is un-freezed but there is no sound…. after few seconds the game freezes again One more time I tried to end the process from the task manager but nothing happens of course…

I really have no idea what to do anymore to get this fixed…. it has to be the patch because the day before that I played for around 5 hours with no problems. On the next day when I downloaded & installed the patch… this things start to happen!

Thank you Ashley for helping out on this issue. I am sure you are very busy, so thank you for taking the time to help me and the others with similar issues.

Since the patch 2 days ago, on the first day of the patch, my screen froze, and then unfroze and kept going, maybe 3 times. the next day, no more crashing to the desktop, but it did freeze not respond and have to be force closed. I ran CC cleaner, which I had, but hadn’t run in a while, just before the 2nd day where the game did freeze.

I’m also having this problem. My game just randomly freezes and all I can do is ctr/alt/del. VERY annoying. Around the same time the freezes started occurring my screenshots started to get bugged too. Around 70% of time I try to take a screenshot my game goes into some kind of stutterloop that stops if I alt tab to desktop and back. All this started with the patch few days ago.

I have solved my freeze problems today… by simply re-installing the game and removing the drivers! But it’s a shame that I had to download 6-8GB of game updates!!! This feels like a whole new game to me….

Since the latest patch my crashes occur approximately every 15 minutes. The game has become unplayable. I’ve tried everything suggested in the forums, including looking at overheating, disabling firewalls, etc. with no success. I notice that people with more recent systems than mine have been having problems. One common thing in all my crash logs is a memory leakage issue. The general consensus seems to be that this is an Arenanet problem. Until they fix it, or at least are prepared to look at their servers, I shall be unable to play. For the record I have no issues with any other games – Final Fantasy (extremely graphics intensive), Vinductus, Aion, WoW, Rift, Tera, ….. at least there’s plenty to do.

That’s just a guess, but a similar thing happened 4 months ago. Suddenly with the introduction of a new game patch, lots of people (including me) started having game client crashes.

The game logs we posted back then mainly included problems of the game writing to memory addresses or similar memory related errors.

My guess is, that some RAM chips (e.g. so called value RAMs that very often have faulty sectors) just can’t manage the stress this game is producing. Those RAM chips only show strange behavior under very high stress and so you won’t notice any problems when using other applications/games.

Maybe with one of the last patches, the stress your memory chips have to handle has increased (culling fix)…

Back then, the crashes stopped for me because I built myself a new PC (not because of gw2 of course) with high quality RAM chips. And even then I had to deactivate the xmp profile to get rid of the last few random crashes (even though memtest ran more than 2 days without any errors with xmp profiles enabled).

Not that I don’t appreciate the content updates we get. I like this game and due to the hardware I’m using I also don’t have any problems any more. But I think it would be time for some code optimization too, especially when it comes to the cpu and memory utilization of this game…

Catching some errors (if possible, I don’t know the code of course) instead of letting the whole client crash would be a start, so that also players with standard hardware can run the game and also enjoy it.
