I am getting this after a fully clean install from a new setup file. It does it mid-patching at the log-in screen. I can log in, and see all the news and such but it crashes before the updates ate fully installed….usually around 2%.
I bought the game yesterday and have the same problem as well with installing. Only difference is that i get to around 10-40% before crashing. Would like an answer to this problem.
try this, it worked for me after trying to update after a long break. (same prob as you)
in the folder you installed GW2, there is a folder named bin (for me on 64bit windows the default path is C:\Program Files (x86)\Guild Wars 2\bin)
delete the BIN folder and restart the launcher. (the bin folder is recreated automatically)
edit: on 32bit windows it should be: C:\Program Files\Guild Wars 2\bin

Yeah, mine tends to drop randomly. The fresh install will get farther in, but the patching goes to about 2-3% before crashing. I’ve had many people recommend various things and I have tried it all… Memory test to see if anything is corrupted, HD scan to see if there is an issue with the HD, Defrag, rename the .tmp file,,… and so on and so on. I even tried deleting the Microsoft Security update listed in this article to see if it would help: https://support.pixlr.com/hc/en-us/articles/203111644-Installation-Crash-Error-997-Overlapped-I-O-operation-is-in-progress-
Still nothing seems to work, and when I left the game a year ago it worked fine. I have not updated any equipment on my computer in that time frame.
Really frustrating!

Tried this and the installer went all the way up to 99% but then it crashed again with the same message.
“Disk write failed with error 997 (incomplete): file ‘C:\Program Files\Guild Wars 2\Gw2.dat’
Disk write failed (997: ): file ‘C:\Program Files\Guild Wars 2\Gw2.dat’”
Edit:
I managed to install the game after changing the installation folder to C:\Guild Wars 2 instead of C:\Program Files\Guild Wars 2

Sounds like you needed to run your client as Administrator so you would have the system rights to write to C:\Program Files, for future reference, you can do this by just rightclicking the launcher & choose “Run as Administrator”
Had 3 char crash in pretty much the same spot.
Ran “repair client” which gave me ‘disk I/O error’
Ran scandisk, which found one corrupted cluster on the whole disk,,,, in the GW2 folder.
Fixed that and ran repair again.
Works.
Beware: scandisk can take several hours to complete. Run it through the night.
