Crashing in Labrynth & Crown
this could be a driver issue… did you do a full clean of your previous driver install (for the 4870) before installing the drivers for the 290? There are many utilities on the net to help clean up driver installs, as the uninstall programs are notoriously bad and often cause issues during driver upgrade/updates.
After doing a full clean reinstall of your drivers, if you still have the issues I would start removing all peripherals to ensure they don’t cause the problem. Try reinstalling sound drivers or changing sound settings, as sometimes issues come from them.
Once exhausting all those possibilities, your best bet would be an OS reinstall, though you may consider hardware failure in your harddisk or your RAM (run tests on these if you make it this far).
Sorry I can’t be more specific, there are too many possible causes. Hope that helps at least somewhat.
One other thing to check is your computer’s heat. Install a program like SpeedFan and see what temperature your video card gets to before it crashes. If the game is crashing when it exceeds a certain temperature (e.g. 70 degrees Celsius), then it may be a sign that your video card is dying.
I definitely did a full uninstall of the old driver software and a reinstall of the new software. Needed to. Different Catalyst Control Centers. As far as heat goes, my processor is liquid cooled, my old video card was liquid cooled and the new one has the Vapor X technology on it and doesn’t get that hot under load. I have a Thermaltake Level 10 GT case with plenty of fans to it as well circulating air through. Trust me when I say, it’s not the computer, it’s the game.
Also keep in mind Zaxares, this is happening on 2 video cards, my old one and my brand new one. It only starts to occur once I’ve gone into the Festival areas.
OK, good.
At least you’ve ruled out heat/old video cards as a possible reason. The last 3 times I had crashes while playing games, it always turned out to be a failing video card.
Check out the crash report, if you get one. When you view the details, look for “faulting module” or something like that. It will be a .dll (i.e. a driver). Hopefully the name of the driver will be clear enough to let you know what is causing the problem.

run a memtest, to rule out memory. you’re having some interesting issues which seem to point out general failure (not game failure). Blame it on the game if you want, but since it’s only happening on your computer they seem pretty innocent so far (but that can’t be confirmed).
And you say you did a full uninstall… but did you use a third party tool? This is a common mistake. The uninstall option from control panel IS NOT ENOUGH in many cases. My process is the following:
1. uninstall CCC in the control panel
2. reboot in safe mode
3. run driversweeper
4. run ccleaner
5. reboot
6. install new driver
if you still have issues after that, we can conclude it’s not a corrupted video driver. but if all you’ve done is uninstall from the control panel that’s just not enough.
Looks like you may have corrupted textures / models in the GW.DAT file. Do a -repair command startup.
Fate is just the weight of circumstances
That’s the way that lady luck dances
well he did say he reinstalled the game multiple times, so a repair doesn’t seem like it would fix it
I’ve been fortunate that I often don’t have to use something like drivesweeper. I’ve been working on computers for so long now that I know the locations for removing drivers, removing software from particular hidden directories, registry keys, etc. It was all uninstalled.
As far as the repair thing, I did try that as well. It’s just funky that it only starts happening in the 2 festival locations and once it happens from that, it affects the rest of the game. I’m actually not exclusive in this. One of my guild mates has this issue too. The game has been stable for me until the Festival.

That’s odd. Best I can guess from what I’ve seen is that the code in the game has a weird bug in it that is only manifesting on your (and your guildmate’s) computers, which, to me, means that it’s a chance combination of any number of things specific to your computers that are causing the code to malfunction in a way the devs did not anticipate.
AMD cards maybe? He’s running an R9 280X. I’ve been running AMD cards and ATI processors for 16 years on my computers. This computer here that I have is only a few months old. New build.

I definitely wouldn’t recommend ATI cards ever. They’re decent, but games are made for Nvidia cards, and ATI cards adapt to that.
There’s a chance that’s related to the problem, but I dunno. I guess your best bet is to go through with a support ticket and see if Anet can help you. You do, after all, have a report detailing exactly where in the code the failure is, so a quick look by someone on the relevant team should be helpful.

NVidia vs AMD cards actually vary game to game based on what’s best supported. GW1 was actually best with an AMD card. Never usually had problems with it but I’ve heard in the past of NVidia users having had the problems. So it would be surprising if that’s the case here. Just on the off chance I did take the advice of using the Drivesweeper. I uninstalled my existing drivers, ran the drivesweeper program, also uninstalled the game once more and did a fresh reinstall of both and I’m still getting the same crash issues. I’d open up a support ticket but I never hear back from ANet. I was hoping by putting something here it would create some sort of visibility. I’m probably going to have to try the support ticket route though again.
@OP: Is your CPU and/or GPU overclocked?
it’s possible this is a game bug, but even so there’s a question as to why it only happens on so few machines, suggesting we should be able to find the cause and a workaround for it.
I’d still run a memtest, and check to make sure your system has enough power (maybe you’re overdrawing your power supply). I’ll try and think of other possible problems.
Well, after back and forth with ANet, the problem has been solved. My computer is simply just too awesome for the game as my wife put it lol. With the new content and my motherboard set to turbo boost my processor and my processor being overclocked to 5GHz, it caused instability. Turning off the boost and ticking my processor down slightly to 4.9GHz has stabilized the game. It blows, but hey. Just too awesome.
