Hello, I have just got GW2 brand new (not sure what the version is!), installed and then the update began! It downloaded 350mb & was only 1% of the total 86,000+ files needed to play.

What is the total size of the update?

Is there a way to pause the update progress?

As I only get 5gb /month, do I need to run the updater until its download the whole thing or can I stop it turn off and continue the download? if its over 2gb I need to download in segments..

Yes, you can pause the download. Just stop downloading at any time, and start it up again when you are ready. The counter will reset at 0%, but that is just how many files are left at this particular download session (it restarts counting files left to download).
Approx 15Gb is the size of the client, you can install a copy of the .dat file obtained from another GW2 user.

The downloader is confusing in the way it keeps track of what has already been downloaded, but there is no problem starting and stopping it, and you can look in the properties of your GW2 .dat file to see how much you have left to go. Hope this helps.

The total size for the GW2 file on my PC is about 16gigs.

ANet has a terrible, terrible installer that doesn’t seem to support pausing, or network disconnects.

It took me a while to download at first because my wifi at the time was a tad lame.

My suggestion is to see about borrowing a physical CD of the game, or…well…other ways I can’t suggest here.

If ya know somebody with the game already install have them copy the gw2.dat file to a flash drive and just copy that to yer gw2 directory

You definitely going to want to install from the disk version. Even then, there will still be 5-7 GB of updates to do. You can try to download some chunks at a time over a few months, but the first suggestion is the best —- if you know anyone who plays the game, ask them to stick a copy of gw2.dat file on a drive for you.

The % completed refers to the number of files completed, not how much data has been downloaded. Thus it is not all that helpful for measuring your progress. You can stop it and it will pick up where it left off, but try to wait until you see the files remaining number go down by at least one. Interrupting it during a large file download (when the files remaining number is static) is wasteful and can sometimes corrupt the dat file (meaning you have to start over).

On the bright side, GW2 is one of the lowest bandwidth using games I’ve ever seen. I typically use about 10-15 mb/hour while playing. So once you get over the initial hump, you should be good. Also be aware there is a monthly update which can be anywhere from 300mb to over 1 GB. Something to plan for.

yeah base install from 2 x dvd’s is about 13 kitteneeGeeBeez, if current updated total size is 16 then that be about 3 gb update.

I live in a smallish town that I am noob to, don’t know many ppl.. Any1 live in mt gambier? I have a flash drive for you :p

Good to hear the game uses little data during play, I only have about 1gb to last 2 weeks (mite upgrade my plan!)

I can use free WiFi @ McDonalds or the local library to continue the updater.

yo, just bought the game on dvd, and busy downloading the update after the install…can anyone give me an estimate of how big the download will be at this stage? I checked the size of my game was 13.5 Gb after install. Any replies much appreciated!

My .dat file is 32.8GB, but my file was created Sept. 17th.

Compressed game data file Size varies depending on how it is patched as the space it manages can fragment. The current ( 28 December 2012 ) fresh image size is 15.0GB and it contains over 228000 files. This file is machine independent and can be copied between machines.

CrazylegsMurphy has posted above that his file is 16Gb, and that was just a month ago…or will your file be bigger if you have had the game for a longer time?

Probably, if you don’t re-install. I don’t bother doing that as I have plenty of space.

Just to make sure what Inculpatus cedo said is clear : the percentage is based of the number of files and not the amount of data to download.
