Hey Arenanet. I’ve got a major nuisance!

I recently upgraded my computer’s graphics card to a more recent one. Specifically, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 650 (Super-clocked) manufactured by EVGA. The game is graphically upgraded as I can play with mostly everything on high setting and shadows on ultra at that.

The issue is… I’ve been crashing a lot more lately ever since replacing my old graphics card. I’ve been crashing a lot more with the Lost Shores event going on in Lion’s Arch, but that is irrelevant.

I typically crash when pressing the map key and pulling out the map screen. The entire screen would be covered in equal square boxes with a high saturation blue and yellow gradient. Sometimes this occurs when I open the Hero tab. My character would be replaced with the same blue to yellow gradient boxes and soon after, crash. I can’t even get a screenshot, since it crashes too quickly.

Please help! It’s frustrating, but I know you guys can help me fix this! Thanks for the hard work!

I am having a similar issue. Just now the trading house consists of a big cyan square and a yellow square.

I have nvidia gt220 and just updated to latest beta drivers to see if the issue is fixed. Has started happening this weekend with the event.

Also I sometimes lose my cursor, it turns into a black square.

And the map seems to hide all the areas I’ve explored and go a lil hinky when zooming in and out.

Yep, yep! That’s what it is! Again, it’s something I don’t want to encounter. Seems like my computer is about to die every time I see that. I also get the black square replacing my mouse cursor as well!

Hello, I am having the same issues above. I get the weird cyan and yellow screens and soon after Windows gives me a message that gw2 has stopped working. I also get frequent crashes when going to the map several times or even switching zones. The colors did not start showing up until the latest update. I went from viewing the game on the highest settings to the lowest and still get issues. It has created lost of frustration and I am hoping there is a fix. I have a Nvida GTX 560 Ti and have tried reseeding my video card and fresh driver installs.

Hi HalcyonBrush – I would recommend a clean installation of the latest video card drivers. We usually have players try Driver Fusion. I would also recommend you update your DirectX. The game client requires the latest DirectX 9 components; this is true even if you have DirectX 10 or higher already installed. Please follow the instructions at Microsoft’s web site to install the newest DirectX 9 update:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=3b170b25-abab-4bc3-ae91-50ceb6d8fa8d

Please be sure to save the file to your Windows desktop. Then create a new folder on the desktop and extract the DirectX files into it. Once they have been extracted open the new folder and use the DXsetup file to install DirectX.

Hi there, i have exactly the same issue explained up here, i have a Nvidia GeForce 9600gt (yes, my pc is “a bit” old but the game runned fine except for the “out of memory” crash).
Like the people here, i noticed this issue after the last update (Lost Shores). This “cyan thing” appears, my cursor becomes a black square and as soon i takea waypoint etc. the game crashes (i have updated my card’s driver and the DirectX like said by AshleySegovia, but the problem is still there).
Reading this post it’s obvious that the issue is linked to Nvidia cards and the last update.
Hoping in an Anet response and possible fix, thanks for your attention.

Did all the above….no change. Still crashes frequently, cyan and yellow gradients still there, I went from running the game on max settings to low. All this happened immediately after the update.

Same issue. Began with the new content in LA. I generally crash after being in game for 30-60 minutes while changing a zones. ArenaNet.log reports “Out of Memory” as the reason nearly every time (one assertion, 24 out of memory reported for the last 25 crashes).

There seem to be a high number of page faults on gw2.exe (2.87million) after 24 minutes. 1.5g memory in use by program

For those of you with an Nvidia card, you might be running into an issue I pointed out in a couple other tech support threads about recently starting to get odd errors and BSOD issues with GW2. See more here:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-hardware/nvidia-graphics-adapter-wddm-11-graphics-adapter/8a4be740-7848-40ca-b799-1427bc053aa3

and here:

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/1250-73-windows-update-failing-install-wddm-wddm

A recent Windows update listed as Important was pushed out by Microsoft that is causing all manners of grief for owners of Nvidia cards. If you can, you may want to try to do a System Restore back to before you started having problems to see if that update is the cause.

Yep, I’m still crashing. Sometimes my preview screen would be missing my character before I crash. I’ve seen the Cyan square on the game menu as well.

I’m considering about uninstalling GW2 and then reinstalling it. That might solve the issue if it’s a patch file that haywired.

Actually HalcyonBrush, if you have an Nvidia card, chances are that Microsoft update is adversely messing up the normal Nvidia drivers, and I bet uninstalling GW2 and then reinstalling it will be a waste of time and cause needless throttling of your hard drive.

Before attempting that, you may want to view your installed updates (in the Windows 7 Start menu search box, type “View installed updates”) to see if you have the one I pointed out. It looks like you should be able to right-click it and select Uninstall to try to remove it (note that I haven’t tried this, since after doing a System Restore to get my system back to a good state, I told Windows to ignore the update and not install it in the first place). I hope this helps!

Thanks! I did uninstall the Windows updates and did a clean re-installation of the new drivers from the disk that came with my graphics card. The problem still persists. It shows that I am ‘out of memory’, though I have 4 GB of RAM.

Here’s the error message from the crash:

—> Crash <—
Out of Memory: arena=Default, cat=Root, allocBytes=8294448, arenaBytes=264147168, fallbackBytes=1193632, align=16 ,

Hope I find a resolve for this. Driving me nuts.

Hey Halcyon, I have had the same issues. I don’t know if this will help you or not but it seems to have worked for me so far (knock on wood). I did the delete dat folder thing that Anet suggested but I also noticed something else that I found odd when I went to the graphic settings in game. The textures setting was blank when I clicked auto detect ( this seems to be some glitch that I’ve noticed lately when I tinker with the graphics settings witch can be fixed by manually clicking it).

Anyways, after I fixed that, I played the game for about three hours with no cyan and yellow color boxes and no crashing. I went to various zones to do my daily and spent my last 2 hours doing wvw. My game almost always crashed (with the graphical artifacts) every 5 to 10 mins doing this before. So remember to check your graphical settings to make sure that none of the entry’s are blank and, as you already know, delete your dat folder to see if that helps.

If this don’t help you, I hope your issues get resolved soon.
My card is a gtx 560 ti by the way.

Thanks for the tip. I did notice a significant change in the number of game crashes after uninstalling the updates. Though, after hours of gameplay, I would encounter a crash. I noticed that the crash report window wouldn’t even show up. Just the default Windows 7 crash window giving me the option to close the program.

I found the core of the issue though. It’s Lion’s Arch. Outside of Lion’s Arch I crashed with just a frozen screen or black screen and even taking a screenshot of something. I crashed a total of 3 times outside of Lion’s Arch. Once I entered the overflow in Lion’s Arch, I crashed a total of 7 times all in one sitting of about 5 minutes. I encountered the cyan and yellow squares again, but they’ve invaded my cut scenes now! This is crazy… Now, I’ve got an issue that won’t let me progress with my story mode.

It’s definitely Lion’s Arch though. Does A-net have a method of verifying missing files or anything? Again, this all happened after the Lost Shores patch went live, so something fried during the patch for the Lion’s Arch map for my game.

My crashing didn’t happen only in Lion’s Arch. It can happen even when i was farming in Cursed Shore.

Quite unprofessional of the Anet team to just keep us waiting and not talk about anything.

If you have your video driver crush you need to do:
- if you use Asus crad download Asus GPU tweak;
- If you use another cad download MSI Afterburner
- install and run this program.
- you need to use option GPU voltage. Increase voltage by 1 or 2 steps(one step is 0.012). For example my GPU voltage was on 0.975 after increase this to 1.000(1st step – 0.987: 2nd – 1.000) I no longer suffer from video driver crash.
- Then press “apply” and save this profile like “1”
- every time before run GW2 run Asus GPU Tweak or MSI Afterburner and load your saved profile.
Video driver crush happen because GW2 “think” that your factory overclocked(most of cards now factory overclocked) card is unstable so if you wanna play without crash try my little guide. Good luck!

Some update:
Also you need to try increase GPU clock too by 1 or 2 steps(1 step 10 Mhz)
For me it looks like by default I have GPU clock – 775 Mhz GPU voltage – 0.975 and mane many video driver crush.
At 800 Mhz(2 steps for clock from 775 to 800) and 1.000 voltage(2 steps from 0.975 to 1.000) GW2 work fine without video driver crush…

Halcyon – I have the precise issue that you report – same card too. I am going to go through everything I have not tried already mentioned here. DareWreck’s mention of the patch would be more helpful if the exact update to uninstall was listed instead of links…maybe I can decipher and post. – Thanks All and it would be nice if ANet had a clearer communication about this issue.

I had the same problem. I did exactly as he said, not only did it fix my new trouble but also the crashes I used to have on GW2 every 1-2 hours vanished. I can run the game for as long as I want on whatever settings I want , never a crash again.

Thanks mate
