If you’re getting DDOS’ed, you need to speak to your ISP. Anet doesn’t come in and handle those.

My bet it’s not an DDOS and it’s a node between you and Anet having issues.

Not really my whole computer is affected by this i know it’s comming from GW2 players and my network drops from 85mpbs to 10 mbps and it takes like 5 minutes to oppen google. I know i’m being hacked by some players and thats why i’m asking the developpers to take this issue seriously

You aren’t getting hacked, and it’s your responsibility to make sure your connection is secure. If some how they got your IP from somewhere, then it’s your fault.

Call your ISP, Anet won’t come and fix your issue that is outside of their control.

Even though what you describe sounds EXTREMELY unlikely, you’d have to contact support yourself to have anyone look into it. Create a support ticket. But you should contact your ISP first.

If it’s your whole computer, are you 100% sure it’s not a virus or other unwanted software dragging your system down. What other programs to you have running? Are you running any p2p programs or torrent programs that could be eating your bandwidth? Also are you always playing the same people? Funny that it only happens when you are doing well. Is the rest of your team effected also?

If you have a dynamic IP, simply change it. Before doing so however, you will want to ensure that your computer is clean. After doing so, don’t give out your IP, which can be as easy as getting you to click an offsite link, which is why forums that allow inline image linking are a vulnerability.

If you have a static IP, contact your ISP.

It’s about clogging the “server” with access requests, you could in theory do it with a home PC.

You need to contact your ISP. They can look into it way better than a stranger on the internet. And really, why would you trust a stranger on the internet to help you resolve what you think is a DDOS attack from other strangers on the internet?

If the issue is affecting all facets of your internet connection (as in, things outside GW2), call your ISP. They can give much greater insight into any connection interruptions you may be having.

If the issue is affecting only your connection to GW2, submit a support ticket. They can look into your connection to GW2 servers and help to diagnose the problem.

Thank you for the help.

I have called my ISP and i was told that many users in the same area than me had the same issue. However i have asked my friend living 50 meters away from me who has the same ISP than i do and never had any troubles. The conclusion is my ISP is aware i’m getting DDOS but deny the fact that i’m getting hacked and claims that such attacks are impossible and they are most likely scared to lose a customer. I don’t want to bring my PC to the closest police station because 1) it’s heavy 2) they don’t give a kitten about cyber attacks in my country.

Any help is welcome regarding programs or tricks to reduce and neutralize the impact of DDOS. I tried installing a VPN but it doesn’t change anything it just brings more lags and delays in between skills but at least allows me to oppen google …

What reason do you have to not believe your ISP when they tell you that you’re not being attacked by GW2 players and that “many users” in your area are having the same problems? Maybe you should take a bit of a break from the game (and the internet as a whole) for a few hours or a day or two, and then come back with a more calm frame of mind to see if the problem is still there. If it is, then contact your ISP again and request a service call to your home.

Just to put this out there (because I’m 99.99% positive it’s not a DDOS attack):

DDOSing anything takes a lot of money and effort. You have to flood an internet connection with so much that it will shut down. Unless the person got your IP from somewhere (you clicked on any naughty links on websites, or you gave them your Skype information and they pulled your IP from there), you cannot be getting DDOSed.

Though I find it funny when people think any type of internet issue is a DDOS attack. Sometimes a node between you and the server you’re connecting to is having issues and will result in high ping to anyone who has to pass through it.

In security, always look to your own equipment first.

IMO, you are not “getting” hacked. You ARE hacked. Or, at least I’m 98% sure you are.

You didn’t mention anti-virus until a few posts ago. This should have been the first statement out of your keyboard after the problem description (before the rant, even). To fail to mention it earlier means you didn’t take it seriously (until someone else did). I guarantee you the hackers took it seriously.

What about your firewall? What’s that telling you?

Don’t have a firewall? Then it’s 100%, not 98%. Not up to date and more than 3 years old? 100% again. Password less than 14 characters on your Wi-Fi? 100% again. Password less than 20 characters on your firewall and WAN-side monitoring allowed? Same.

First test: check your hardware firewall’s logs. It will tell you if you are being dosed or ddosed from outside.

DDOSing anything takes a lot of money and effort.

Actually, it’s not that difficult and costs little (although, it’s NOT free). Botnets rent time by the minute or hour, and hacking kits are pretty cheap.

Now, doing it RIGHT, that takes effort and expertise (but not much more money other than training). Without doing it right, it will be detectable in the local firewall AND on the ISP’s network. So, it won’t happen consistently over time unless A) they’re good, or he has no firewall.

Without knowing your setup- this could just as easily be your antivirus software kicking in and driving your PC hardware Boot disk into overdrive or Windows checking for updates. Your whole PC would be slowing down and if high disk activity (hdd) is present you would struggle to get a high bandwidth.

On the other hand….
Yesterday my ISP was having issues resolving DNS names (eg Google) into the magic numbers (IP Addresses) and connecting people (homes/users) to the information they were requesting. It was located as a fault of the monopolistic evil empire (Known in the UK as BT – not MR. Big T or any other thing but the good old British Telecom) and some hocus pocus of the ISP a few hours later and magic….
That thing known as the Internet started to work again.

The world was all right again and all was good – I no longer had to contact the outside world and was happily back inside my digital playground knows as Guild Wars.

Like someone mentioned in a previous reply: Try disabling the automatic Windows Update. Crafty jokers must have known that they could no longer hide their actions behind the possibility of some problem on my end.

You aren’t being hacked.

On the contrary, the most dangerous hacker is the one that lurks in our own minds, disabling our thinking with fear of the unknown and distrust of what we can’t easily explain.

Or put less poetically for the OP:
It is common for individuals and parts of the ISP’s customer base to get much slower service periodically. There are a variety of reasons why it might happen to you but not your neighbor on the same ISP. You can, if you want, learn how that happens or you can work with your ISP to resolve whatever it is — they’ll do so regardless of whether their customers understand the root causes or not.

If it was a Ddos, it would have stopped. Nobody pays for a kittening botnet for hours to disable a single player in some game.
As for your isp…They have a sample size of probably a few hundred people+ extensive data and determine a lot of them are having problems.
You ask one friend and based on that assume they are wrong…

It’s much harder to do with a pc. Servers that offer services to the outside world need to offer access to the outside world. That’s an avenue for a ddos attack. PC, using a decent firewall, can be set to a mode where it simply ignores all the connections that weren’t established from the user’s side.

You could possibly ddos the gateway server through which PC is connecting, though.

Complete nobody in sPvP ? Lol maybe you need to get up to date and get out of fractals / raids or Maguuma.

I’ve been playing video games for 12 years. I’ve been downloading “dangerous content” for more than 12 years. I’ve had keyloggers and trojans on my computer that i easly get rid of. All of these things never ever affected my network stability since 12 years but by a september night, i managed to beat some high end players and reached the hall of fame.
At that point, all the kitten started to happen on my network connection not to mention cyber bullies adding me all of a sudden on hangout, skype, twitter and facebook.

On a side note, ever wondered why you see pink everywhere IRL ? Or people wearing those scarf pauldrons with bandit mask ? Well you would get it if you see me arround in the pvp lobby.

On a serious note, i know i am being hacked it happens that i stay connected and see people using skills and moving arround but i can’t even use skills just move arround and don’t get hit. I press alt tab oppen internet gmail youtube twitter everything works. I even go to speedtest and i see 85 mbps. Then i go back to the game and i see i have been disconnected at 250 : 208 after a 2 win streak. Coincidence ?? I think not. All this disconnect happens after a 2 win streak not to mention i play every single time against the same people. Then i try to oppen the game again …. Surprise account log in takes 10 minutes, google doesn’t oppen twitter doesnt works youtube is dead i go back to speedtest and see connection dropped from 85 mbps to 5 mbps.

Most people saying this thread is a joke don’t know what DDOS is anyway here is a link :

Dos = Single PC Attack
Ddos = Multiple PC Attacks

“Criminal perpetrators of DoS attacks often target sites or services hosted on high-profile web servers such as banks, credit card payment gateways; but motives of revenge, blackmail12 or activism3 can be behind other attacks.

Well Anet see the IP of players in the same instance. Since sPvP arena is considered as such it is easy to tell if one of the players has abnormal connection behavior at some point of the game.

  • I oppened the console and typed in : netstat -ano and i saw alot of IPs ( arround a hundred )from USA, UK and France my home country trying to connect to my PC. Conincidence ? I think not"*

For all the people thinking this is unlikely. I actually think not. Ddos has been used in gaming for years already and it is really cheap to flood someones personal pc. They only need to get your ip and can DC you at any time. This is definitely not the first time I heard about this in gw. I can recall multiple occasions on which I know our TS got ddos or a commander that was doing really well by the oppossing server. I even had a friend who was always mocking people on TS till someone threatened him with hacking. He laughed it off. Next morning he couldn’t access his account. They gave him the new password after some days after he promised to move servers. Yes, WvW is serious bussniss. I know people who never use TS because it is to easy to get your ip off it and people can DC you in fights. So yes ddos in gaming is definitely a thing. Here a video of it happening live.

Could even be a faulty DNS server. Again, ISP stuff, though.

Pretty much to get DDoS’ed you have to almost deliberately give out your information and a reason for people to want to use it with malicious intent. If that’s honestly the case, you’ve likely done goofed in life somewhere and probably deserved it. Still deserves contact with the ISP since ANet cannot do anything; there’s no such thing as a targeted DDoS through a server to a remote user using conventional methods; you’d need to inject network code into the server’s routines (I.E., almost if not literally impossible) to force this to happen. Anything else, and ANet has quite literally no control over it. So call your ISP.

If you’re absolutely and totally 100% sure you’re getting DDoS’ed through ANet’s servers, have personally run diagnostics to prove it, and base your claims with years’ experience in network engineering, IT services, or Computer Science, your attacker literally has the entirety of most of the internet’s information, including the ability to change and modify such (I.E., bank accounts, stock trading and investment, etc.) at their disposal, in which case, call the FBI and relevant authorities to come investigate the single most dangerous individual on the planet lol.

For all the people thinking this is unlikely. I actually think not.

You need to re-read the OP’s posts. They admitted that their own ISP said that their neighborhood/region was suffering from reduced bandwidth.

It’s not impossible that individuals get DDoS’d; it happens. It’s just that there are many, many other plausible explanations and the OP’s response to suggestions to investigate any of them has been: “no, I know it’s DDoS”.

Therefore, there’s really no point in discussing whether the OP suffered an attack — they won’t offer the evidence that others can use to evaluate the claim.

If you are serious

step 1: open command prompt and type:

ping google.com -t

for 5 minutes and see if you get any high MS or request timed out, etc

if thats good and you think you might actually be “hacked” or have a virus or whatever along the lines of that just format your PC.

Any commercial PC place will do that for 50$ or more but its not hard to do it yourself. Back up the files you want to keep via external usb/harddrive or something like google drive and then format

Reinstall windows and you will guaranteed 100% not have any viruses unless you happened to back up the and put it back on there.

By default all ports on windows are closed until used by something that needs it

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_TCP_and_UDP_port_numbers

The way many ddos works is that they request info repeatedly. They cant request anything if you dont accept requests in the first place. You should read about ports and ddos and you could probably fix the problem yourself. A virus’s job is to open a port to requests. “hey this port is now open let me request the same thing from this guys PC a few thousand times a second” but wait dont you see whats up here? This works well to take down websites, because they cant serve other users because they have to upload the request, but you dont have to serve anybody. Not much, anyway. its highly unlikely the badnwidth you use to upload the info they request is enough to lag your internet.

The reason websites cant fix as easily as somene who is just running a PC is because they cant differentiate between the real and fake requesters but if you know everythign youre connected to youll know everything that isnt supposed to be requesting stuff from you, and it actually is possible to prevent your personal computer from benig vixtimzed by DDOS.

Its kind of ridiculous to even suggest this is a DDOS attack on your PC though. it is most likely just internet packetloss.

This is further demonstrated by the fact that low bandwidth does not make you lag, packetloss does. People with 50kb/s connections can play gw2 without any lag in game as long as they dont have packetloss. The info needed to communicate with the server is tiny. Thats not to say that bandwidth cant be squeezed so hard that they drop packets, but this almost certainly isnt a ddos attack. its just packetloss.

OP how many hours do you play a day on a usual basis?

For security reasons i can’t answer this question. It depends

Please do not respond to this but… Do you experience any of the following symptoms:

Sense of mistrust, hypervigilence, difficulty with forgiveness, defensive attitude in response to imagined criticism, preoccupation with hidden motives, fear of being deceived or taken advantage of, inability to relax, or are argumentative.

Again please do not actually answer but you may want to talk to your PCP if you experience such symptoms.

Lastly I would mark the thread to be closed and open a support ticket. They may be able to help you however you will have to be more forthcoming with information with them. I could be wrong but in my opinion, nothing good can come from this thread at this point so I would take it up privately with support.

Good luck to you

Thank you everyone for your answers and support which i had no time to answer individually.

Thanks to netstat -ano, after blocking some IPs in my router and after installing Bitdefender Total Security and some advanced anti malware with network scanning i do not experience anymore disconnections. Took me arround 2 hours to deal with it and a couple dozens of IPs to manually block but it was deffinetely worth the shot.

Thank you for the support everyone, this thread may now be closed.

I’m getting DDOS’ed with packets my network is about to explode when i’m doing well in sPvP. I require developpers admins and gamemasters to investigate my account.

How to deal with this ?

Thanks

Ask your ISP for a new IP address, or force your router to pull a new DHCP if you are not running a static. Disable any DYNDNS type hostnames that are auto updating, or any Phone home software that publicly broadcasts your IP address on the fly.

Make sure you are not running any network applications such as bit torrent and other P2P stuff (Even Skype and teamspeak)…ect

Then return to GW2 and see if the issue persists.

If someone is getting your IP (via GW2 servers its impossible unless its someone from the inside), they are probably using something common you are using with them (EVEN TEAMSPEAK!) and pulling your IP that way. Then they are probably using ION to DOS you from a small botnet.

The thing is, if you are getting DOS as you believe then you will completely go down until the DOS stops. Unless you are running a enterprise grade router (Cisco, Juniper, ect) your SOHO crap cannot handle a simple SYN Flood and cache out its memory banks to allow for normal traffic flow. Normally SOHO crap will just reboot, over and over, until the DOS is over due to Page faults and other things that type of equipment will suffer from.

But since you are saying that your 85Mb/s connection drops down to 10Mb/s, you are not getting attacked or DoS’d but rather probably just massively infected or running a Killer NIC in your machine with QOS enabled for ‘gaming’.
