DDOS - cant you..
Why would they do that?
Yeah, I’m not sure what one has to do with the other.
Exactly. We want new players in the game. There will always be DDOS attacks until the internet is perfectly protected and I don’t think that will ever happen.

Hmm to bombard the login server they need accounts and 1000s/ 10,000 + do you really think they would do this with paid accounts lol … hence there where no DDOS issue prior to free trail accounts.
- I did say untill the issue has had a proper work around ie with firewalls
Yes you may loose a few new players, isnt that worth being able to play with out lag and dc, also do you not think they loose more from the cash shop not being used in the mean time?
Do you think logging in causes DDoS attacks? The DDoS attacks aren’t targeted to Guild Wars 2 only.

correct that they dont just target GW2
-YES they need to access the login server, by bombarding packets thus not allowing other traffic access as normal, i would hazard a guess they are using free accounts to do this.
I don’t think that’s how it works.

Now, I’ve never been on the giving end of a DDoS attack, but I’m still fairly certain that it’s not done that way. Plus, DDoS attacks were happening to the game before Free To Play started for GW2.

A ddos can be done with anything that dumps replies back – it can be a service, icmp, anything that is open for response. Even better when there is a broadcast, people back in the day should remember smurf/drdos/pyloris/loic/blahblahblah etc. They don’t have to attack ncsoft servers directly either, they can go higher up in the chain. Just like back in the past, they can start their setup by infecting large masses with a rootkit depending on os, they can also easily take over routers that are so open on the internet and start wailing on backbones or what not. Right now I don’t think they are directly hitting ncsoft servers though, it seems to be collateral. Lizard/chameleon/whatever types have always enjoyed doing this sort of thing. It could be anyone really, just need some coin and you can have your botnet. It just takes one sad person to want to troll and deny everyone elses enjoyment.
Note even if they are hitting the NCSoft servers directly, free accounts likely has nothing to do with it it.
Just submitting millions of request to authenticate with bogus (non existent accounts) will take up resources if someone wanted to do a more targeted attack.
And the first D in DDOS is distributed, which typically means many thousands of servers (typically unpatched systems that were easy to infect), so it is not like a single block of IP address can be shut down.
There is a reason why these types of attacks are hard to prevent and resolve.
Considering other MMO’s are having issues with DDOS attacks, I highly doubt it’s GW2 Free Accounts that are causing the issue.
I know when I log into FFXIV, there are notices about recent DDOS attacks.

Just because a certain pattern seems to exist doesn’t mean you can point fingers at it. If you do a trace route in command prompt you can see where the issues are. If you’re not technically proficient, stop pointing fingers at Free To Play accounts as if you’re better than technicians.
The main issue is that attacks can be directed at anything/anyone/any server that the data packets travel (from your PC to the server). It’s not a direct teleport. Data packets need to travel along “hops” across many IP addresses. If ANY of those IP addresses along the way gets attacked, your connection to GW2’s server ceases. And the particular IP address that gets attacked may not necessarily be solely used by GW2. In other words, other games may also utilize that particular IP address to transmit its data packets.
Do not necessarily point fingers at GW2’s Free To Play accounts. It could be another game’s Free To Play accounts for all you know. And like other folks have mentioned, you do not necessarily need legit accounts to bombard the servers. Remember, it’s not just the final destination (GW2’s server) that matters. Everything along the pathway matters too.
Also, learn how to spell. It’s “lose (meaning reduction)” not “loose (meaning the opposite of tight)” and it’s “trial (meaning to try)” not “trail (meaning something like a path)”.
peace out

Not really. Shortly before gw2 became f2p, Lizardsquad went on a rampage DDoSing servers left and right which affected many games like gw2, LoL, Blizzard’s titles, etc. They also brought down PlayStation Network and Xbox Live.
They would even announce beforehand which games they were going to target any day the week on their twitter account.
I don’t know much about how they did it, except that you need a “botnet”, but free accounts were not involved back then.

DDOS attacks dont need any kind of account.
The attacking computers in the botnet simply bombard the game servers with useless data which overloads the server and overloads the network connections to them.
The attacks are extremely hard to combat.
Its simply an unfortunate downside of the way the Internet is designed.
