So I had a power outage an hour ago and my computer died while i was downloading the game client.
When I restarted the client used data repair application but now im downloading everything from the start.
I had downloaded almost 6 gigs of data and now i have to download it all over again with my bullkitten 3 mbps internet.
I tried fixing it with the “-repair” command but that didnt help at all.
Do I really have to reinstall everything?

You can check how large your gw2.dat file is by looking under my documents/guild wars 2. The file should be around ~17.5 gb in total once complete. At least this way, you can see how far you are in respect to being complete.

I know it’s hard to predict a power outage, but if there is any possibility of one, you should close your client manually prior to, if possible, and shutdown your comp. save the download when the weather is more steady. If the game closes without a proper exit while downloading, it’s very likely you will lose that data file and it may have to start from scratch again.

For future, you can store a backup of the .dat file on an external drive incase you ever need to reinstall the client again.

Anytime a computer powers down improperly (especially windows machines), there is a likelyhood of file corruption or data loss. That is rule # 1 of owning a pc, shut down properly and in the event of inclement weather, shut down just in case.

I understand that some residential areas around the world have unreliable power, but when you live there, you just understand that data loss is a great possibility. It’s really not anet’s fault.

To prevent issues like this in the future, you could always pickup an uninterruptible power supply battery backup unit. If the power goes out, it can give you the couple minutes to quickly shut down properly. Usually a great idea if you live in an area with unreliable power.

Are you sure it is not verifying the files already downloaded. Also if the laucher restarts for any reason, the percentage bar resets.

Lol blizzard does suffer from that too at times, I’ve had it happen. And steam is an odd duck that uses a ton of system resources while sitting in your system tray, even while seemingly doing nothing, who knows what it is doing.

But if this is a new download of your client, it has nothing to fall back on if it was in an odd bit while writing the data.

But honestly, if you’ve never had an issue from a power outage, count yourself lucky! If this is your first data loss ever, I’d say you’re still ahead of the curve.

And yes, I forgot to mention the bit Veeber mentioned about the data bar, but that was why I recommended checking the gw2.dat file.

I couldn’t toss the blame on ArenaNet for this one, blame mother nature, blame the power company, or blame yourself for not having a backup. At least now that you’ve gotten burned maybe you’ll have a backup in case this happens in the future.

Please don’t pass the buck, it is not arena net’s fault that you failed to take appropriate action to prevent this from happening, such as:

  1. Using a surge protector to protect your computer and any other electrical systems.
  2. Making a backup of your computer system and data files that would require re-download if they became corrupted.
  3. Took active measures to protect your computer equipment during lightning storms (i.e. Turning of electricals that are expensive to replace or non necessity during a lightning storm)

Following just any one of the above examples could have prevented this and wouldn’t require you to make such forum posts pointing to the blame to someone else.
