Dell 8700 Video Card Query
Size of a graphics card doesn’t matter too much anymore today. It’s the hardware on it that counts. both cards are optimal for Guild Wars 2 but I’d go for the GTX 750TI because it’s much faster than the alternative.
Neither of the two graphics cards are top end, so always keep in mind that a card having more RAM is usually packing slower RAM. DDR3 is substantially slower than GDDR5 which is designed around gaming.
Avelos,
Thanks for the reply. It’s been quite some time since I built my current PC and haven’t kept up on the newer tech. Good to note that the GTX 750TI would be the better choice as I’d like the larger hard drive that it comes with. RAW photos eat hard drive space.
Not too worried if the cards are not the industry standard. If you look up the minimum system requirements to play GW2 you’ll see my current PC’s specs. So this should suit me just fine for some time.
Thanks Again!
for the price of the XPS 8700, neither of those cards are a good choice.
I would expect to see a GTX 770 in the VERY LEAST in a XPS gaming workstation. You are seriously better off building your own, or buying a mid range full dell tower and installing your own GPU after market.
Laptop: M6600 – 2720QM, AMD HD6970M, 32GB 1600CL9 RAM, Arc100 480GB SSD
Do not get the 745
750ti>>>>>745(oem) ddr3. Hugely different chips
The oem 745 is a rebadged oem 640 (oem) with 384 cuda cores on the keplar GK107 chip. Super weak with slow memory.
The 750 ti is the new maxwell GM 107 with 640 cuda cores. The gpu and the memory are much much faster. old gtx 660 equiv
In no situation is the 745 better. More vram will not cancel out the huge discrepncy in the gpus
the 2gb vram will only be an issue if you are gaming on a monitor with resolution higher than 1920×1200p.

Dodgycookies,
Thanks for the info, this & what Avelos said helped to seal it for me. Since my motherboard bit the dust on Saturday, I had no choice but to order up a new PC. I went with the model that had the GTX 750. I guess the old one knew it’s days were limited. Good thing I back up to the NAS regularly!
