I’ve downloaded the Mac client and opened the installer (it says it installs like 509 files) and close the installer. The GW2 app opens and nothing happens. No window to start downloading patch files, no nothing. I’ve completely uninstalled the game and re-downloaded several times with different browsers and same result. The GW2 game file installed is 73.1 mb. That’s strange because my friend with a working copy said his file was like 127mb. Any thoughts?

What version of OS X do you have? I am having the exact same issue, no error, no dialog, nothing happens after I double click the app.
I then poked through the forums and system requirements, and noticed that we need OS X 10.7.x or higher, which means Lion+, unfortunately, I have snow leopard(10.6.8), so I’m guessing that is the issue. It’s a shame that GW2 requires 10.7+.

I have the exact same problem. I’m using mountain lion on a mid 2011 27-inch model with AMD HD6970M
I think this is related to the use of Cider as I had the exact same problem when trying out EVE on the mac earlier this year (still on Lion at the time). I can run the GW2 client in Wine, but that has serious performance issues.
Note, my mac is a client of an OSX Server using mobile accounts with local user folders.
Of note is that cider seems to be unable to bind wineserver – when I run cider from the terminal I see the following error message:
prompt$ /Applications/Guild\ Wars\ 2.app/Contents/MacOS/cider ; exit;
2012-09-19 19:37:28.507 cider[733:707] regapi failed: 1
wineserver: bind : Invalid argument
logout
I had a similar wine server bind error message in the EVE log at the time I tried out EVE. This never got resolved by the EVE support team though.
Furthermore, when looking at settings in “/Applications/Guild\ Wars\ 2.app/Contents/Resources/Preferences/config” I see the following section:
[wine]
"Windows" = "c:\\windows"
"System" = "c:\\windows\\system32\\"
"Temp" = "e:\\"
"Path" = "c:\\windows\\;c:\\windows\\system32\\"
"GraphicsDriver" = "macdrv"
"ShellLinker" = "/usr/lib/transgaming_cedega/winex/bin/wineshelllink"
However, the ShellLinker path does not exist on my system. There is no transgaming folder in “/usr/lib/”.

@Abib
The folder doesn’t exist on my machine either, so that should not be the problem.

Thanks @Magoo, I presume you don’t have this issue then
The problem seems to be caused by a binding problem of wine. Would have been easy if a missing folder was the reason behind it. I hope Transgaming has an idea of what creates this binding issue…

We just updated the Mac Beta installer to include our newest launcher, which could help if you are having issues with the first launch of the client.
You can download it from the same location on the account page:
https://account.guildwars2.com/download
Note: Re-installing will overwrite the existing game, and you will have to download the game content again. Only re-install if you are having trouble with the launcher. If you are able to log into the launcher, then your client is up to date, and re-installing is unlikely help at this time.
This version of the launcher also has better error recovery, so if your problems persist, it may help to let the launcher stay on-screen for a minute or two.

That seems to be working. At least the content is downloading now. Thanks!

No change for me, other then that I now receive an entry in console after I try to start the client and nothing happens (NNNN replaces my 4 digit user ID in the log):

This issue is still not resolved, it indeed has to do with having your account stored on a server. All Cider ports games fail on this.
The workaround is to make your account a mobile account, that will make a local copy of your account on your mac. This tells me that somewhere the cider code is looking in a place that does not exist on your local computer.

I have the same problem. Installing 509 files but when I go to the folder to open the game the big icon just zoom in and that’s it, nothing more.
I tried to go invisiblematt.6402 way, but when I open Macosx and click cider, I can’t do anything, because some script executes and shows me:
imac-olaf:~ dylesid$ /Volumes/toshiba/GW2/Guild\ Wars\ 2.app/Contents/MacOS/cider ; exit;
wineserver: /Users/dylesid/Library/Application Support/Guild Wars 2/config is not a valid registry file
logout
[Process completed]

And now it works. Hell knows why. I just used an app called AppZapper and uninstaled any versions of GW2 I had on my iMac via it. And it seems to work. I am now in the process of downloading billion of billion of files.

Had this same problem and found a solution! Noticed this problem on my son’s laptop because he has it setup with a different login then my wife’s (he’s not an admin)
Go into Library/Application Support/Guild Wars 2/
open the ‘config’ file in text edit.
looks for the line under [wine] that says:
“ShellLinker” = “/usr/lib/transgaming_cedega/winex/bin/wineshelllink”
Add sudo in front of the path like this:
“sudo/usr/lib/transgaming_cedega/winex/bin/wineshelllink”
now just command S to save and relaunch Guild Wars 2

The issues with these are all about permissions, you need to be running installing the game on an admin account, period. If not, you need to fix some things running as sudo. Simply do not install the client on a “user” level account, you’re going to have these issues.
