You’ll need to contact support. Do be aware though that a refund may deactivate your account so it can not be used again and the card that you used may be deactivated in their computer also. You should make sure of this before you do the refund.
ANet may give it to you.

I doubt it, because lets be honest, you want your money back because you are feeding into the drama and entitlement from the veterans who think they are getting burned because anet is offering new players an incentive to come into a game that has been running for 3 years.
I mean, you had to know what you were paying for, it was all laid out before you in plain text, you read it, you were excited for it, you bought it. Then your guild chat, and your map chat began to fill up with hate, and you let other people make your decisions for you, and now you want to hang out with the cool kids who just want to hate everything.
they arent running off with anything of yours, you ran to them and threw your money at them. they are still there in the same spot, they arent moving, and the money is theirs now.
So basically, you want to run away with their money.
Well, yeah. The opinions of others have influenced my decision. They made me realize that the expansion is just a bit overpriced in terms of the content that’s actually going to be in it. I regret pre-paying for it. I may still buy it after release, but I feel stupid for pre-paying.

You should be able to get a refund given you just purchased it. However, if you got some of those mini items, and added them, that might be an issue.
Pure speculation on my part to be fair.

Also if you have spent any of the gems you received from the Ultimate edition that may complicate things further. But as others have stated this is between you and support. No one else can solve this for you.

Ok. It does sound like refund will close your account. That would be permanent and you would lose everything on it. So, only do it after checking this out and if that’s what you want to do.

When you buy an MMO you’re not buying a game. You’re buying access to content. It’s not just about what’s in the box, it’s about what comes after too. If you really think what you get in the box is all the play time your’e going to get out of HoT, you’re probably mistaken. There’ll be the Living Story resuming again. There’ll be new stuff added.
You’re buying access with an MMO, not a game. Think of it another way. How much did you pay for the original game and how many hours did you play it?
I know I bought Tomb Raider for $60 bucks at got about 20 hours out of it. That’s not unusual for games. People buy console games for that price all the time.
Here you get hundreds of hours for your purchase. I’m not really sure why you’d listen to the naysayers. Most of them are going to end up buying it anyway.
I’m not saying that I won’t purchase HoT. I will definitely 100% be playing HoT when it’s released.
I just don’t feel comfortable with my pre-purchase, anymore.

Um . . . he hasn’t ‘accessed’ any content in the expansion as far as I know. Your argument made no sense. He asked if he could get a refund. Not your opinion on the matter.
And then if you realize after launch that you really do like it and want it, you can’t get the pre-purchase bennies like the title and the beta access and any of the digital items that are only for pre-purchasers. The gem discount might also be only for pre-purchase as well, though I’m unclear on that.
I’ve bought CE’s in most every MMO I’ve played precisely because if I want it later, it’s too late.
Good luck to you Koviko! Please let us know how it turns out.

So you are 100% you are going to buy HoT when it is released. You bought HoT before it is released but you will have it when it is released. So if you are 100% sure then I don’t see the problem. You bought something you just said you were 100% sure you were going to buy anyway. You just don’t get to use it yet aside from beta.

If he gets a refund and his account returned to the previous state, this is an immensely false statement, regardless of motivation.
And why do you assume HoT wouldn’t offer you more updates and future specialization?
Time is the most important element of game to determined it’s value. Now GW2 itself can be purchased in less than 10 dollars after 3 years of time. New stuffs will always be more expensive, so you really should not just ignore the time issue of the value.
For example you purchased a game for 60 dollars 5 years ago and now it only worth 5 dollars. So does that mean the future contents that’re clearly smaller than the original game worth less than 5 dollars? Clearly the answer is no. If you want cheaper price for HoT, wait for another 2 years and you may be able to purchase in less than 10 dollars.
I’m not saying that I won’t purchase HoT. I will definitely 100% be playing HoT when it’s released.

I’m secretly hoping the price will drop by then. Maybe there’s a $10 premium on there for beta access, which I wouldn’t be able to take advantage of anyway. I’ve been invited to the betas before but they never fit my schedule.

I spent the 100 dollars thinking “oh, I get $50 in gems basically for free” without even realizing, “wait, I’m paying $50 for a tiny expansion.”
When I originally bought GW2, I got:
- dozens of fleshed out maps,
- several dungeons,
- multiple PvP & WvW maps,
- reworked classes from GW1, and
- a full personal story (and promise of a Living Story).
Now, for the same price, I’m getting much less. I don’t know… My first thought when I pre-purchased was that I was supporting a game that I love. Usually, I support the game with gems, though. I didn’t plan on participating in the beta because I’d like the gameplay to be fresh when it releases.
$50 of the money I’m spending to support the game doesn’t give me gems and doesn’t give me $50 worth of content…
I’d honestly just like to get a refund, for now. I’d hate to think that a company I’ve trusted for so long would just run off with my money even though I’m not happy with my purchase.
:/
You… DO realize they havent even touched on the pve content yet, right? I mean, even the guild halls are kittening huge. Plus you’re getting another 2100 gems worth of stuff too. Not to mention beta access.
Mind you, if you’ve spent the gems or redeemed the code, you’re probably SoL and will risk account closure to get a refund. Plus if you want a refund already, certainly you were less than 100% sure you were wanting to put the money into it?
edit: they’ve also explicity stated that $50 is the price of the expac, and the expac alone. Prepurchasing merely confers the benefits of access to future beta events (and the title I believe).

I seriously doubt it will. Too many people have already purchased the product. That would open up an entire new can of worms. The price might drop eventually, but I doubt anytime between now and say 6 months after HoT goes live depending on sales.

Don’t hold your breath. If anything changes to the options it will be to add something to accounts buying standard as an upgrade (e.g. a character slot as per popular demand) and then bump up the other two editions accordingly. Even that is very dubious though. Personal expectation is that they will just swallow the bad PR.
Yeah better to get money back and wait for a price drop. There will be plenty of us not buying the expansion that the main game will be active.

I do realize they haven’t touched on all of it yet, which is why I realized that I felt weird about pre-purchasing. I’m buying something that I really don’t know much about, and paying $50 for it. In my mind, I was paying $50 for 4000 gems and bunch of cool collectibles, but it didn’t occur to me until afterwards that I was also paying $50 for a mystery expansion.
I don’t know. I’m debating hitting submit on the ticket. If the price is never going to decrease, then I guess the refund is pointless.
But I’m really hoping it’ll decrease after the betas are over.

What do you mean we don’t know what’s in the expansion. Just for the guild stuff I’m in. The story continues. We know about masteries and specializations, if not in detail. We know there’s a new WvW map and a new PvP type.
What we don’t know is how much, which is not knowing what’s in it. The only thing they really haven’t covered is the challenging content.

If you havent redeemed the code, sit on it and wait. When they reveal more info, if you still think it’s not worth it, try a refund. This way you dont need to wait and buy again if it turns out you really like what’s coming. If you’ve already used it, then think of it this way;
- you paid $50 for $50 worth of gems, a character slot, a permanent finisher, a mini, and a couple other goodies (worth at least 2100 gems alone)
- you paid $50 for the expac (the price it’s going to be for the foreseeable future), as well as beta event access
Even if nothing is offered in the gemstore later, you’ve basically gotten ~$125 of stuff for $100. Plus the beta access alone is going to help show whether or not it was really worth your money. All told, it’s too early to declare it wasnt worth the money when they havent completed all the reveals.
(and for those that forget, ALL future content is being locked behind HoT, including future LS episodes, kinda hard to put a price on undeveloped, yet accessible [in some form] content)

I thought about that. Remember however, the expansion comes with another Guild Wars 2 account, so to speak, and the old “non expansion” accounts are no longer available. It now has a different SKU. It’s possible when you buy the expansion the “new” account and the expansion are now one thing and you can’t deactivate one without deactivating the other.
ANet may give it to you.

I think the bigger issue will be those vanity items to be honest. If the OP added the mini, for example, to their account, that might be all it takes to say no.

Yes the mini can be added to the wardrobe. I added mine as soon as I got it.
Another issue is if the Gems from Ultimate were spent. For example if someone bought Ultimate, got their 4k Gems, converted all or some to gold, spent some of that gold on TP items, that would cause a huge problem that I bet CS could not reverse via refund.

Not true. We know we’re getting elite specs. We know we’re getting guild halls. We know we’re getting long-needed guild changes. We know we’re getting a new spvp map. We know we’re getting a new wvw map. We know we’re getting more than just this.
So… we know quite a bit of what’s in the expac so far.

I agree, we know enough about the expansion to know whether or not we want the content. I for one Love the game and the items i’ve seen and will likely preorder sometime soon.

Except both are linked now. There isn’t a way to unlink them. So it’s a closure of your core account also. It’s kind of shocking they don’t have a system in place to revert it back to core after a refund.

If you want a refund, ask for one. However, I don’t see how anyone can say whether the expansion is overpriced or underpriced. All we can say is that it costs US$10 less than the original game cost at its release and that it’s more than some expacs of other franchises.
Personally, I think ANet has always delivered great value for my money and I’m inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt. I don’t care if the game has 1 map (with 3 biomes) or 50 maps (with 1 biome) — I care that it generates hours of compelling gameplay.
For me, $50 is about as much as I can spend on games for the whole year and I’m willing to plunk it on HoT. If you don’t think it’s worth it, sure, ask for a refund.

I sure would be absolutely positive I wasn’t giving up my account for a delay in transferring money to ArenaNet (OP states he only wants to delay payment until release).
If a refund entails terminating your account (unless your account is very new), it would be something I would not entertain. Even the possibility of it being mistakenly irrevocably terminated.
Especially if I was positive I was just delaying the transfer of funds….
Still, your choice, and good luck.

Would like to point out that the Ultimate edition will not be an available option for you to upgrade if you if choose another version.
Note that the Ultimate edition is only available for purchase in-game and via buy.guildwars2.com. Additionally, there won’t be an option to upgrade to the Ultimate edition later if you decide to purchase the Standard or Deluxe edition

Yeah. That’s what bothers me about this thread. OP said he had the ticket already made out and was thinking of hitting submit. If he made it before he found out that his account could be terminated and didn’t update the ticket to ask about this first and he takes the advice of everyone saying “go ahead and ask for a refund,” he could find out the hard way if his account is then refunded and terminated and he loses everything, when he only wanted to put off buying till later.
Hopefully he at least updated the ticket so it’s a question and not a refund request.
ANet may give it to you.

And as said before, you can’t know wheter or not the expansion worths 50 euros because we absolutely don’t know what’s in it.
That’s untrue, we’ve known what HoT will have ever since the initial announcement:
- 1 class
- 9 subclasses in the form of Elite Specializations
- 1 WvW map with mechanics unique to it
- 1 PvP map with mechanics unique to it
- 1 PvE region (smallest current region is Maguuma Wastelands with 2 maps, largest is Kryta with 6) with mechanics unique to it
- A horizontal “level cap increase” in the form of Masteries
- Guild halls
- Continuation of the personal story
- New items and skins
This is the list of features we were presented with, which is decent for an expansion, but the price we’re looking at now is closer to a full game or standalone campaign than an expansion, hence some of the complaints.

The wvw map will not be just for expansion users, or else it will break wvw.
Ask for a refund. It’s your right as a consumer, although it’s Anets right (and duty) to shut your account down accordingly as well.
While your prepurchase WAS silly (as all preorders are), the value of it is not bad. Most games give you far less time/dollar.
Next time, think before buying. Impulse purchases are always bad. Do not do them.
