Hey all, heres the deal – me and the wife want to transfer to american servers for guild/language reasons only we don’t know how slow its going to be, we have a slow connection at our home, under 1mbps (they say its distance to the exchange) but manage guild wars 2 just fine on European servers with youtube vids/radio in the background.

We want to guest to test this out but of course you cant and we don’t want to use 1000 gems trying to find out – so we can only ask here how you think it will go. Oh and we are in England if it helps.

Thanks all

I am from Belgium and play on american servers, personally I don’t see much lag, but my connection is higher that yours.

Hi there SirAmikVarse! Try running the game with the -diag modifier. You may also just do a trace using what the -diag modifier script does by using a command prompt to run this --—→ “pathping -w 500 -q 25 -4 64.25.39.1” (copy/paste everything in quotes in your command prompt). That will give you a rough idea how the connection is to the US server farm. Unfortunately, the primary factor in latency can be distance. Most likely you are better off playing on the servers closest to where you play from (in EU). However, it’s worth a shot to just try it and see. While checking, you will likely get to test out the transatlantic cable TAT-14 =) It can handle 1 Mbps just fine =)

Or you can do a speedtest () And pick a server in america. It will give you global image on how fast the connection is. It will not be the actual speed so watch out with those numbers.

Since you’ve already gotten some good suggestions on how to test the connection, I’ll just go ahead and give you my two cents worth of experience

I happen to play from Libya, North Africa. The quality of the internet, equipment, lines etc here is plain bad. I play on an NA server because of my guild. I have a 60KB/s connection. My ping fluctuates between 220 and 350, so I do have some lag. I do notice it, but personally, I find that this on its own doesn’t hamper my playing at all.

I realize I’m at bit of a disadvantage in sPvP. For me that’s fine, I’m not trying to be a top competitor and still have fun in the matches I end up in. Meaning, I don’t find it frustrating to play. I have no issues playing WvW either, though I imagine here too I’m at a slight disadvantage in small skirmishes.

My own issues with lag spikes or disconnects come from others using my connection to watch YouTube or from the fact that our equipment is just old and not very stable. But the connection itself is good enough to play the game on. I’d imagine your situation can only be better than mine. One of my guildies is in the UK and generally has no problems whatsoever from what I know.

It’s possible or even likely an EU server might give you a better connection, but I consider it a small trade if your NA server gives you a guild/community you enjoy being with.
