This helps me a lot on my 17" widescreen, 1440×900 resolution. I don’t feel like “I can’t breathe” or “the world is smushed roigmy nose” anymore.
No noticeable performance hit on my computer thankfully (playing at maximum settings on GTX 260M). But I knew there wouldn’t be, since I play at a much, much higher FOV in my other PC game.
Glad you’re fixing the vertical FOV bug, but I hope you’ll let us customize FOV to our personal preference in the future too.
Keep up the good work.
(I agree that you shouldn’t force this on players who might not like it, please just give us an option)

I use steam to launch my games and I can’t tell if by adding the -command to the shortcut in my library is actually enabling this or not. I don’t see a setting to turn it on or off and I don’t have the time to read 10 pages of a thread weeding through mostly I like it or it’s not quite there yet in hopes that a post even remotely answers my question. I’m not sure if it just isn’t working for me for some reason or if it is so subtle that I can’t tell the difference if there is no setting in game to toggle it. When I look at the screen shots I see a difference which is why I think I’m oddly doing something wrong even though I have triple checked the command line.

The change only takes the camera back a little, thereby increasing the view both vertically and horizontally a little, and makes all objects proportionately smaller. No changes were made to camera positioning ability (angles where the camera can be).
The following picture shows the increased FoV and also shows approximately what can be seen without the switch. (As someone else mentioned, reflections on water are off with the increased view, as can be seen on the first picture’s reflection of the orange object being more to the right compared to normal).
It’s nice to be able to zoom back more, but what is annoying is the camera’s behavior in tight areas where objects force the camera to move with the player’s back obstructing the view. The best solutions for this issue involve keeping the camera where it should be, making it go through all obstacles, and making all obstacles in front of the camera transparent. I.e. the camera goes through the roof, through walls, and nothing can force it to change its angle or distance from the player. Except the player, of course.
After all, the camera is not the player. The player can’t go through obstacles, and as long as we aren’t, the camera should follow us at its designated distance and angle.

Thanks very much! My gameplay experience improved drastically!!! But i still feel it’s not 100% there… horizontal space still does not feel like 90° angle appropriate for PC gaming.

As mentioned by a few others, water reflections are completely messed up with the VFOV. They’re completely off the object they’re supposed to be reflecting unless the object is dead center on your screen. Please fix this before you guys put in the VFOV change, it’s extremely jarring to see.
This isn’t my video, but shows the problem off perfectly.

The latest version of this is totally unstable on my rig. My system freezes up and I have to hold the power button to restart the thing.
Windows XP SP3, DirectX 9.0c (yes in working order, i checked my DxDiag), P3 dual core proc 3GHz, 2.8GB ram, and GeForce9800GT (1024MB) vid card.
I’ve had/have issues with my motherboard where it glitches and freezes up, on random occasions.. But the -testVerticalFOV triggers it soon after loading every time.
EDIT:
I just tried a third time, this time while monitoring via Task Manager…
It’s definitely a memory leak. It leaked like a sieve.

The FOV beta is a huge improvement. This, along with the other camera changes, means that, at last, I can play the game without being physically ill.
The camera is still not as user-friendly or responsive as others but it’s good to see ANet listening to their customers.

I was skeptical at first because I don’t want to see a super long range camera like in most mmo’s. I know that if you let people pull the camera out a mile that it becomes a necessity.
That being said I think the new FOV is very well done. It’s more pulled out but not too much.
I really hope this is implemented soon so that I can get rid of that shortcut on my desktop.
BTW I use a 1900×1080 23.5 inch monitor.

Is it just me or is it a bit weird that in 9 days and 10 pages we’ve not had a reponse to any feedback in the official feedback thread?.
Any chance of an update Anet?, will there be a chance of a slider/option to have the old/new fov or an even greater fov?, will there be a chance of a slider to adjust the vertical character postion? and after the MK bug for greater zoom level will there be a chance for a bigger zoom level aswell?.
Thanks.

It seems to me that the diffrence here is that the camera is set back slightly further than normal. Im not sure if I see any real diffrence in view, but because the camera is further from the toon you get a more viewable area.

Please, for the love of everything that is good.
Give us a distance slider, and increase distance by a certain amount more than what it is now…
It’s getting really frustrating to play this beautiful game, nearly in 1st person mode, because the camera is so kitten close,
And im playing at 1080P, and its STILL too close.
Give us something like .. 50% of what we got from the mad kings acent to madness bug, It actually made the game beautiful to look at, and greatly improved things in pvp..

This has me wondering as well.
This thread (as well as this one) have both stirred up a lot of emotional responses from the community about the need for a FOV slider + the ability to change the vertical positioning of the camera. I’d like a definitive answer from the devs on whether they’ve reconsidered their stance so that I can make my decision on whether or not to return the game. (As it stands currently I can’t play longer than 30 minutes without getting eye strain/eye focus issues [never had this experience in a game before either]).

When I started using this I didn’t notice any difference. The forums helped with understanding the change. This has helped with Jumping Puzzles because I can look directly above and below (which is something I can do in real life and my brain expects to be able to do in the game). It seems I can simply see better; when something is hitting me, I find/turn/see the direction better. Less often do I see the teeth and eyeballs of my asuran. Maybe it’s just me, but I thought it was better two days ago than yesterday – either that or I’m just testing the limits and trying to see if I can see the teeth and eyeballs with the new view. Also, zoom in/out is a feature I use all the time.
Showing a friend how to try it, she said, “Wow that’s much better!” And looking straight up in Lion’s Arch, I didn’t know all that beautiful artwork was up there. The new view is a wonderful improvement.

Still the best FOV i ever had was with the Mad King bug, oh man a whole new world…will they ever consider to make that FOV happen? i really would like to know
i am adding this video as a reminder of how AWESOME it was…
now i believe 90% of the people who experienced this felt in love. Any word from the high?

Great improvement so far! I agree with many that being able to zoom all the way in to first person would be a great change. Also, being able to zoom out even further would be great imo as well.
Thanks for all the hard work in improving an already great game!

The change helps on jumping puzzles, but it’s crashed twice in the past few days. The non-FOV client never crashed. IDK, in some ways it looks less pretty than the other, smaller-focus client. It should be an option, I think, but not the only view.

you can load that wide wide FOV from arah. The client switches to the view once you start the giganticus lupicus fight, and it would stay like that as long as you don’t restart your client. switching toons does not affect this and it’s much much much better to play wvw with the ultra wide view.

This is pretty good, even further back would be better imo. The distance set in the Mad King instance was perfect.
Also, I think at least this distance is an absolute must for Norn.
One other thing I’d personally like is a lock field of view option so that it doesn’t zoom in because there’s an object behind my avatar.

I LOVE THIS! It doesn’t just let you look up, though that’s neat. The camera actually seems more pulled back, which is awesome. I’ve been talking with several friends about how we wished this was the case. I REALLY hope you implement it for everyone, or at least have it as an option in the game — with a slider maybe. Such a great feature. Thanks ANET! =D

Couple of updated pics with the new FoV of what the game could look like with a minor vertical shift in camera.
The 1st and 3rd pics are standard, the 2nd and 4th are adjusted. This is what it could look like with a 1 inch adjustment only.
I see where you’re going with this. It’s true that with the new FoV, you’d actually be able to enjoy much more of what goes on in front of you if the pivot of the camera was able to be lifted just a few notches.
I posted the below attachment in an earlier post – we already have a great camera height with the norn. Because they’re so big, the camera has to be higher to accommodate this, but a nice off-shoot, is if you choose a norn female with minimum height, the camera still remains higher – which is very, very nice.
I sincerely wish ArenaNet would look at giving us some way of lifting the camera pivot – similar to the way they gave us an option to shift if left or right. Together with this new FoV it would be just perfect … and then I can start having proper fun with some other races as well!

love the change, makes it a ton easier when navigating some areas and i find that the camera “twitches” alot less around world objects.

getting black screen on log in, using the fov shortcut but i dont know if it related or not.
i googled it and got About 5,400,000 results (0.25 seconds) so its not uncommon but its really bad, theres no way out of it other than hard crash the pc.
honestly, this kind of crash will make me never log in again, its not work risking hardware damage playing russian roulette with launching the client, 50/50 it either works or turns my monitor off
i can guess you guys are messing with gpu clocks or trying to do something clever.
please stop

Had a great time with it in WvW recently, but, as others have said, please make it a selectable optional feature in case it doesn’t agree with all the varied setups and physical conditions.

I finally got around to buying this game today, and was a bit disappointed when it caused the all too familiar motion sickness I get from fps games. I searched around on the internet for a bit, and found out you guys are testing this, so I’m pretty happy about it to say the least. It seems to help a lot with the nausea already. Looks like I don’t have to kiss my money goodbye after all. Thanks!

In reality they’ve changed the field of view from a pretty low number to a pretty low number + a few degrees. It’s still much too low for a game designed to be played on computers (where the monitor is more or less 1-2 feet away).

This is definitely better. But a slightly larger fov would be better I think or a fov basic and a fov modified by the player fov despite fisheye effect would be cool ! Good job guys !

It’s been said again and again but I think it needs repeating that a set fov is not the answer. A slider is the best solution so that people can decide what feels comfortable for them in regards to the size of monitor they’re using or their distance from the monitor. Typically for a PC exclusive game a comfortable fov would be 90-95 degrees. Personally i’d like a slider that can go from 40 degrees up to 150 and just let the individual player decide what he/she feels comfortable with (we are the paying/playing customers in the end).

I’ve found a problem with reflections in water. The reflected image seems to be drawn too large and slides around faster than the terrain around it. it’s as if the reflected images haven’t been scaled.

Another suggestion I’d like to make to improve the user’s camera experience is introducing first person view.

I’m loving it so far. I’m not used to the default FoV anymore by now.
Though I did notice that while in windowed fullscreen, the game freezes/crashes when you exit the game. I need to enter the Task Manager and force exit the program. That never happens to me with the command line argument is off, or if I’m in a real fullscreen mode. Kinda sad because windowed fullscreen allows for faster alt-tabs, which I do when I’m chatting with buddies that aren’t in the game, or checking the wiki or other things.
Running 64-bit Windows 7 Home Edition, AMD HD6850 graphics.

Amazing. Definitely a step in the right direction. Now we need first person view and a horizontal FOV

Posted by: ulukaiulukai.2584
Now we need a horizontal FOV
Given the same aspect ratio, increasing the vertical FoV obviously also increases the horizontal FoV simultaneously…
We need a slider and a higher maximum FoV, though.
