fps drop with patch
you can put bootcamp onto a 64 GB flash drive you get for $30
however, not all versions of windows will run on it (unlike mac OS, windows normally won’t boot from a flash drive, but it can be done)
this may help : http://lmgtfy.com/?q=bootcamp+flash+driveIt works only on MAC that doesn’t have DVD reader.
sorry, but wrong. I have 2 DVD drives and a flash drive with OS 10 and some utility software on it. For the flash drive, I just installed Mac OS 10 onto it like normal. Easiest to hold down option on startup to select it to start with. It does take a bit longer to start, but not bad. I’ve even been able to play GW2, which was on my internal, while booted off the flash drive, and copying my entire HD to a backup external.
Actually they aren’t wrong. There are a couple of exceptions when it comes to newer macs, but for the most part any MBP or iMac purchased before 2012 that has a disc drive you can’t boot from a USB, install from a USB or install to a USB.
There are a couple of ways to circumvent it, but it involves installing windows in a virtual box and correctly removing the system reserved partition.
So whilst your mac might be able to do it, a lot can’t.
I installed Snow Leopard from a USB hard drive onto a 2008 MBP that had a broken internal DVD drive. I had to reboot a bunch of times while holding opt to finally get it to boot from the external drive. It was a hassle but I did it so I think everyone is somewhat misinformed on this topic.
For the record, I DO NOT advocate any Mac client users running out and buying Windows licenses just to play Guild Wars. A-net sold us a Mac client and they should stick behind supporting it or trash the whole thing altogether.
I have yet to see if this update has affected me. Honestly, I wouldn’t expect much to come from this forum based on past experience. However, along with posting in the thread FF linked I would highly suggest if you are having problems to also submit support requests and perhaps mention this thread in your request as well. Those are really the only ways to try to get attention to the problem.

Of course you can install OSX from a USB… You can’t install WINDOWS though, which is the main issue.
Windows can’t be booted or installed from an HFS drive and the OSX EFI won’t read an NFTS of FAT drive unless you have a newer mac.
oops wrong thread
Tanked my FPS in any form of WvW and is pretty bad in LA after the patch.
Retina MacBookPro, Late 2013

I was clocking 4-6FPS at MegaDestroyer, 5-7 at Golem Mark II. That’s down from “I don’t even bother looking because everything’s fine” before the patch.

I believe that’s what I said. toursene was saying that you can’t run Mac OS off a flash drive if the mac has a DVD reader, and I said that was wrong.
The first time I brought up flash drives, I said windows normally can’t boot off it, but it is possible to make it work with the right googlefoo. I wasn’t aware about the newer mac thing, but since OP was looking to maybe buy a new mac, that wouldn’t be a problem. maybe yes?

Everyone, try deleting your “~/Library/Application Support/Guild Wars 2” directory. It will be recreated next time you launch the client.
Support told me to try that and it appears to have helped. I’m in EotM right now getting up to 50-75 FPS again on my normal settings. It is dipping down to 10-20 with a lot of people around but it is actually playable now.

Well I know we are discouraged from doing so, but I sent a PM to BillFreist with a link to this thread asking if someone could stop by. It may not amount to anything based on past experience here but I tried.
I submitted a support ticket yesterday with a link to this thread… have yet to hear anything ..
Today, I tried again after reinstalling it and the reboot thing.
3 fps on the logging screen.
No guild wars for me today…

No surprised.. What they are telling you to do are generic fix it stuff .. not steps to specifically address this issue .. since the problem is the patch ..
WvW is unplayable at 4 FPS with more than 5-10 ppl around.
Someone reported his GPU overheating after last patch (PC i assumed); should that be of any concern to Macs too, is there a way to check, and if so, has anyone monitored?
iMac 2013 2.9Ghz i5
8Gb RAM
NVIDIA GT 750M 1024MB

There are third party tools that monitor fan speed and the heat of specific parts – so you’d have to download one of those. I don’t personally use them though so I couldnt really tell you which.
iStat menus is pretty much the standard for keeping track of fan speed, temperature etc…
I really am curious as to what is cause the huge slowdown for us. I expect anet to tell us between 2 months from now to never.

I run istats .. ill have to look but I am guessing its probably pure CPU .. since the cider wrapper that runs the windows gw2.exe on macs is very cpu intensive .. which adds additional overhead to mac players that windows players do not incur.
Hey folks. Just an update to let you know the devs definitely are aware of this issue and are working on a fix for it. As always, we don’t have an exact timeframe — ~official voice:~ “At 10:45 AM Pacific time on blah-de-blah date things will be better!” — but we thought it would be good for you to know the team is on the case!
I will now go post in the Bugs and TS Forums, so that folks there know this modest update. But this really is an OK place to post this issue in this forum. If we do not post a lot in this forum, the issues are reviewed and they are worked on, too.
Thanks again.

Thank you for letting us know.
Thank you Gaile .. this is really a very horrific state of affairs .. I feel much better hearing from anet they are aware of it and working on it..
Same issue here. Glad it’s being worked on.

I take it back, it’s still pretty bad. I didn’t have much luck with vmware either. Uggh, bootcamp.
Let’s hope things are better at 10:45 am pst
Thanks for the update, Gaile. If you can’t fix this in the next couple of days, wouldn’t it be good to roll back the changes so you could fix them at your leisure? Right now, mac users cannot participate in any of the group stuff for living story. It would not be nice to have to miss all the events (current and future) because it takes a long time to fix things. Then, after you have fixed the issues and tested it (even on the mac client which obviously wasn’t in the QA process for this patch), you can roll it back out.
As to why people post in multiple places, you answered that yourself- silence. Perception is reality and people perceive that the company does not care about the mac beta client. Just look at the ‘is the mac client feasible’ post: a person comes here and says she is concerned about buying a mac because she knows that the mac beta client is no longer officially supported. That’s how people see it. However, this could be easily fixed by communicating more if there really is work on the client. If there is not, then communicating about that would be equally helpful.
I don’t think they can roll back the changes.
The changes were made to the client itself, rather than specifically to the OSX version – I think rolling it back would require them to actually get rid of changes that have made a positive impact for windows users – not to mention we have no clue if the ‘optimisation’ changes are the blame, or if it is something else in the EoTM update, nor do we know if those specific changes can be separated from the EoTM update changes and simply rolling all of it back to a pre-patch state would garner a lot of backlash – both against Anet and the Mac community.
But yeah, Anet you guys need to have some mac users in your testing pool because it seems like a lot of this backlash could be averted if a couple of the community members who test content before it goes live had macs…
And Ananda is definitely right with the second paragraph.
Gaile obviously you noticed this thread and the thread in the bugs forum, but did you also notice the page and a half in the optimisation thread beginning here: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Official-state-of-skill-lag-and-server-optimizations/page/4
There are a LOT of people experiencing issues and whilst it is great to have you acknowledge them the mac community isn’t left feeling particularly confident about there being a fix any time soon because all previous issues have garnered very little attention. I appreciate that you personally have followed up on some of the more recent issues – but this lack of communication and lack of support has been going on since the OSX client was released over a year ago – that’s a pretty long time and I think you have to agree it’s rather poor – especially considering you guys are so amazing at responding to issues in other areas.
On the topic of the problem, I am not sure, but the evening (eu time) the patch came out, my husband and I did the Megadestroyer event before the first update to the patch was released. we did not notice any fps issues then. However, later that night after the first update, I tried wvw and had the issue we’re all describing. And, the day after, I did the Megadestroyer event again with my husband and we both had very poor fps. There were perhaps less people the second time we were there as well. It could be that something in the first update was a problem or this could just be useless and anecdotal, so take it for what it’s worth.
Thank you Gaile for taking the time to let us know the issue is on Anet’s radar.

It is likely wishful thinking. Lions Arch was getting better frame rates immediately after the patch (like right after it hit) until everyone loaded up near the portals then it was back to watching a powerpoint presentation of gw2. So it definitely has something to do with the number of people running around.

no not for me is was instant and what he described is 100% true. befor world events was fine then with not setting changed right after patch boom BAD FPS drop with even LESS people and the Event
Yes, I’m talking about after patch that introduced the bug in general. I’m specifically talking about the hot fix patch last night. I was detailing that the perceived lack of framerate issues that he himself stated he initially experienced due to a lack of people by describing the frame rates of a near empty Lions Arch. In fact, I am actually getting better frame rates when I’m alone but the performance rapidly plummets around people. For instance, I can turn anti-aliasing on and it actually improves my frame rates for whatever reason (I went from 2 to 5 fps during a marionette event post bug patch).
It really is best if we try to be as descriptive as possible about the actual performance and when we see problems instead of just give a blanket “my performance sucks post patch” assessment.

I can assure you that the company truly does care about Mac players. Devs are working on Mac issues, not casually, but with genuine purpose. You’ll see this in the future, but please be assured that Mac is on the team’s radar and an important part of future updates and fixes.

Yeah, me too. I was like. “Wait, why does Lions Arch feel slow? Maybe it is just a server hiccup…time to go do the marionette…aw…nuts…” Not trying to justify the performance, just trying to understand it.

This is great news. I know you have your hands full as it is with account issues but I truly appreciate your presence here as well to let us know Mac customers are being heard.
Brand new top of line imac…game unplayable. Please fix this Anet.
Another disappointed Mac user. I bought this game BECAUSE it was Mac supported. I won’t be changing my computer or my OS for GW2, and I imagine many other long term fans feel the same
New patch, new bug.

Glad to see that this issue is being looked at, first of all. Thank you guys!
Count me in with those who can’t play the game because FPS is horrible. I’ve always run 15-19 FPS on lowest settings, so to have it drop to half a frame every 5 seconds in a “zerg” of 10 with everyone trying to hit a boss is beyond devastating. I can’t run with the world boss farm on my server, I can’t go anywhere near WvW, I can’t even play certain dungeon paths because the ambient effects tank my framerate to oblivion (I’m looking at you CoE p3). My experience of Tyria has shrunk about a third, and I’m worried it may get even smaller if this continues.

Gaile, I hate to be rude but actions speak louder than words. Our concerns are very valid considering ArenaNets track record over the last year and a half. They are never involved in the Mac forums, they have not given us any updates on the state of the client apart from Izzy telling us that it is not a priority. If they do truly care about the Mac players then they need to show it.
I wonder how long it would take to fix this bug if it was not just mac related but for everyone. Within 24 hours :P?
And here are my specs, got a bad case of the 3fps too.

wtg anet for breaking my game that was originally working fine, wvw is TOTALLY unplayable since the patch(5fps). gg, so how long you gonna make me wait this time huh?
Its good to finally have an official statement after a very long time of hearing nothing at all. Would be great, if they bring the game back to work. Perhaps they find some love for us and even may fix some of the most urgent unfulfilled wishes we have. Just dreaming…
