Hello,

I’ve noticed I’ve been having a bit of FPS issues on two computers. Typically the FPS runs a solid 40-45, but spikes down low to ~15-20 during WvW events or this hectic Lions Arch event with Scarlet (Especially during the three knights… )
Any other game I run on my system runs like a dream come true, but when I play GW2 I get some unbelievable lag spikes, and inconsistent frames. I’m unsure if this is an issue on my end, or something to do with the game?

Thanks.

PC Specs :
Motherboard – Crosshair V Formula Z
CPU – AMD Vishera 8350 8-Core @4.0 GHz (4.2 Turbo) (None of my cores are parked)
GPU – Nvidia GTX 660 2GB DDR5
Ram – 16GB DDR3
PSU – Rosewill Lightning-800 800W

CPU – AMD Vishera 8350 8-Core

that is your problem. GW2 is based on a very old engine and a old api. While the 8350 is excellent for modern multi threaded programs, it’s single thread performance is weak compared to the intel i# core series. For a very poorly written old directx9 game like gw2 your cpu doesnt run it very well, while the intels run gw2 alot better, they dont exactly run it well either. even the thousand dollar i7’s get like 25 fps in wvw at max settings.

try disabling 1 core per module for better performance and oc to 5 ghz?

also delete this thread after you are finished as it will just turn into another long pointless debate of amd vs intel etc etc.

Dodgy is correct about literally everything in his message until the disabling one core per module thing. I don’t have that experience I bought a beater basic board thinking it was good for everything at the time with my FX-8350.

I also agree with Dodgy on the last bit that this will turn into another stupid intel V. AMD thread… Or some idiot will come in here saying “MANTLE IS THE ANSWER!”

Also, good choicei n PSU. I have the Lightning 1000W and 16 GB DDR3. Had the 8350 but now the i7 4770K.

ONLY DO THIS WITH OLDER PROGRAMS as most modern software utilizes mufti threading pretty well and doing the above will cripple your performance.

Disabling one core per module helps in some cases when the software or os doesn’t spread threads properly and dumps 4 threads onto only 2 modules. Also allows for a better overclock on the 4 remaining cores to boost single thread performance a bit more.

I also highly recommend a liquid cpu cooler if you oc. They are cheap and pretty simple to install/use these days.

I gotta disagree w dodgy about the liquid CPU cooler.

As someone who has just buried his main gaming computer last week due to a leak in the liquid CPU cooler I’ve gotta recommend staying away from them. Now I’m on my other computer and Gw2 in groups has the FPS of a slide show.

Water and antifreeze don’t play well with a motherboard and GPU.

Your cooler?
Disable 1 core per Module
OC to 5.5Ghz

Most of what can be said about this “issue” has already been said, your CPU is the bottleneck, Intels perform better and even they perform poorly.

As it stands, I wouldn’t go swapping hardware just for GW2’s sake for the aforementioned reason. 5 fps might not be worth $350. Your CPU is just fine for pretty much everything else and continues to be even more so when technology starts adapting multicore utilization more widely. If i was in your place, I would OC that chip as many have suggested.

@neurojame Which cooler did you have? I have heard very small percentage of closed loop coolers leaking. If you have a custom loop the risk is significantly higher.

@Bee don’t go giving people solid numbers to go for. All chips are unique and not all of them can handle that with even the best cooler. If you give them a number they will strive for it with the risk of possibly damaging their CPU. You should say OC it to max while watching your temps.

Yeah thats… i just dont know why he bought that MB+CPU if he didnt OC it. Next time get i5 + cheap mobo.
With that motherboard he should reach at least 4.9-5.0Ghz.
If you disable 1 core per module = less heat!

Actually my friend run 5.5Ghz one core per module for this game at 1.6V

Yeah sure, I’m not saying it’s not doable, but it definitely isn’t on all chips. I don’t know too much about AMD overclocking, but for example Haswell is gets pretty easily 4.5 on average, still there are some chips that’ can’t even reach 4.0.

1 core per module should decrease heat indeed.

Haswell AVG. OC is 4.2-4.4ghz
AMD FX avg OC on cheam mobo 4.6-4.7ghz while on expensive you can get about + 0.3-0.5Ghz more

Fair enough for the AMD part. Anyway, that translates into 5-5.3 GHz OC on an expensive mobo so I still don’t understand why you tell him to go for 5.5 GHz to begin with.

As for the Haswell, I don’t know where you got 4.2-4.4 but it could be right. Overclock.net’s Haswell OC Thread states that the average is 4.5-4.6, granted the sample is only 120 units so it doesn’t the absolute truth and I believe most of those submissions on OCN are by some experienced OC’ers with high-end cooling solution.

With AMD i would go for 5.0Ghz with that mobo – but for GW2 go as high as possible!

i can get only 4.7Ghz with Ga-990XA-Ud3 – quite disappointed
i mean i already reached 5.3Ghz voltages were 1.65-1.68 V

about haswell – 4.5Ghz is AVg with great MB and good cooling but…
