FPS drop! Why?!

Ever since the Fractals update I have been getting FPS drops like crazy. I figured maybe it was because of the flow of people in Lions Arch, so I ignored it. Then Wintersday came and it got even worse. Again, I ignored it… but NOW I continue to have FPS drops.
I used to run at like 50-70 FPS on High settings without any trouble at all, but now it goes down to 17-20 FPS.

I have asked a lot of my friends to help me out, but they can’t seem to figure out why. A lot of people tell me that my computer is a little over kill for this game so it should run fine. I can run all my other games just fine, nice and smooth. But GW2 doesn’t want to cooperate with me.

Specs:
ASUS Crosshair V Formula motherboard
AMD FX 8-Core Processor Black Edition
Radeon HD 7970 graphics card
16 GB RAM
850W power

If someone could please help me out, it would be much appreciated.
I just want to play GW2 again without any fuss…

I pretty much run everything on High except shadows. I run shadows on Med and reflections on “Terrain and Sky.”
On the bottom setting I have everything on except Vertical Sync.

All of my drivers are updated, system stays cool, and no viruses. I really don’t know what the problem is….

I had the same problem! Out of the clear blue sky, I went from right around 80 FPS (everything on high) to 15 maybe 20 and having to drop down to low settings even after installing beta drivers for graphics card. Ran every scan imaginable, cleared some extra space, and so on. No virus’ or malware. Nothing was installed recently either. System ran within acceptable temps from cpu to graphics. (averaging 42 °C to 50 °C) LA took somewhere around 1 minute to load in overflow, and WvW is unplayable (Devonas Rest server). I call it the scrap booking effect, because it seemed more like looking at screens looping than playing the actual game. Everything else I have installed ran fine i.e. Skyrim on ultra, Dead Space on high, no problems. League of Legends ran with no lag. ect ect. GW2 was the ONLY game I was having issues with. Not sure what the problem was, but I did a fresh install of windows 7 and only have GW2 on my computer and that seemed to solve my issue.. Not really sure what it was to begin with. I hope you find an answer to your problems, otherwise that is all I can suggest.

Yep, same problem with me. Already posted about it on another thread. Nothing has changed about my computer or its performance with other applications. Guild Wars was fine one day, and after the patch, it no longer ran properly at all. It literally happened over night. I hope to see this fixed soon!

Edit: more info
Used to run the game at highest resolution, best performance at 30 fps. Can barely squeak out 8 fps now.

We all seem to have systems MORE than capable of running GW2 on high, but no explanation as to what happened. As Midgethumbs said, it did seem to literally happen over night, which was the same in my case. Tried reinstalling the client before I reinstalled windows, and that didnt work either. I noticed a SMALL change, but only by no more than 5 fps. Wish the Devs would look into this issue…

Same situation here. I was running game on high settings and getting 40-50fps since launch. And since last patch my fps dropped to unplayable 12-17fps. Tried to OC CPU, reinstall video drivers (older and beta versions) and couple other things mentioned on merged fps problems topic. Nothing changed.
I can only hope that next patch will fix it.

I have the same problem since wintersday. I had drops before but it would go back to normal in a few seconds. Now when it drops it stays there.

I wonder if there is any specific way to get a Dev to read the topics. Would really like some input for this issue, as I’m sure the rest of you would too. Im so afraid its going to happen again that I don’t want to put anything else back on my laptop. Which is a HUGE inconvenience..

edit: I know that putting programs, and other games I would like back on my computer may not be interfere with GW2 (or have anything to do with the issue at all) but I’m just trying to be on the safe side. This has been INCREDIBLY frustrating, and I don’t want to spend another day or two trying to fix whatever is causing the fps/lag issue again.

Did you send in a ticket?

I uploaded some vids of how it looks on my end. The odd part is that when I start the PC and game, GW2 works fine for a minute or two with 60 FPS, then it flips wildly between 38-52 constantly, causing delay in gameplay. It used to work fine. Not anymore sadly. While recording, my FPS was a tad more stable.

This is how it is all the time. FPS in LA is around 12-20.

Do you think this could solve the problem? Perhaps Anet did something that altered things by accident? (see link). I am no PC expert, mind you.

OK. I dont know if it works for you or others, OR how long it will last coz apparently AMDs have issues with this game, WHICH it Sucks. everyother game runs perfectly

here’s what i did: ( DO NOT TRY THIS IF YOU DONT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING)
i open my PC case, removed Ram, Graphics Card, CPU
Clean them with a blower to remove as much dust as possible on the CPU, put some Thermal paste if you have one, (ask a PC shop to do it for you) and put the CPU back.

If your RAM is on the slots next to the CPU, try changing slots, or vise versa.
I did these things and now i have 60 fps.
BUT I DONT KNOW for how long(

please Anet, make this game less CPU heavy

Like other people have mentioned with FPS issues, true turning your shadows down to medium or even off completely and reflections on Terrain and Sky. The only problem I ran into with low FPS was I could be running through a zone and a particular area would cause my FPS to drop to 15 fps: soon as I got out of that area it went back to normal.

If I restarted the game it would be fine again. In the end it was starting to get really anoying and I knew this had to be some kind of problem within the code. At first I was going into graphics setting and choosing high performance then back to detect settings and that would fix it untill it done it again.

So in the end after reading the suggestions people were saying about shadows and reflections and applying those settings I have never had that problem since. This really is only a temp fix untill Anet can located what is causeing this isssue and squish it. So my advice to anyone having any kind of FPS issue is to try setting shadows to medium or lower and reflections set to terrain and sky. Thats all you can really do.

Thanks, I must have missed that. The procedure fixed it for two minutes only. Mysterious.

I usually do fine for a few minutes when logging on, before the problem starts. Hopefully a solution comes up in the near future.
