I was checking my spam for whatever reason, and i happened to see an email from the arena net team. Or so it says, though the mail address (noreply@guildwars2.com) is the same as usual. I’ve never had an email from ArenaNet go into my spam filter before, I therefore haven’t used any of the links in the email. The email itself is as follows;

’Guild Wars 2 Account Will Be Shut Down Inform

We are sorry to inform you that your login account (my email) will be shut down or partially limited within 72 hours due to currency transactions or abnormal login. If you want to remove restrictions, please click the following link to validate:

Is this email legit? I, personally, have my doubts. Is this a problem that you are un/aware of? Could be something that requires looking into, before some poor kid happens to give up his acc details. Otherwise please let me know if I have to indeed do something to make sure my acc doesn’t get blocked.

Pamela, they get money. The people behind the computer program that sent the OP (and a few million other email addresses) that spam phishing email are thieves. They are trying to steal security credentials so they can access the player’s account. What they do then is sell everything of value, even empty guild banks, in order to get game gold that they can then sell to other Guild Wars 2 players for real money. After the account has been stripped of everything of value, they will use it to sent out whispers and zone messages to let other players know that they have gold to sell.

It was nothing personal. It was just bulk email attempt to rip you off.

If you get an email threatening an account closure, it is a phishing email and any links in it will probably infest your computer with malware at the very least and (most likely) try and steal your security credentials. ArenaNet does not threaten account closure. If they decide an account is to be suspended or banned, they do it and then wait for the player to contact customer support about it. This is a very good way of handling this sort of thing because it makes it easy to tell if you are being phished.

I’d say it’s safe to assume it’s fake if they can’t even write a proper English sentence. :P

I got the same email from a player named En OOssotsuki and it said was sent by another player and not GS2. So if this is a scam, I guess it goes on and on. The site it gave me to contact is [mod edit: link removed]
