Q:
What the scrub is going on???
Oki so I was here at the release of GW2 and I played my Mesmer named:
Tree kitten since then!
I have had that name for 3 years then I recently paid for a name change and moved the name to my ranger Main ready to play Druid… this was done about 2-3 months ago… and was all fine!
How ever I log in today to find that a name I’ve had since the day the game went live is now no longer exceptable?
I want my name back
any feedback of advice to help me reclaim my name would be greatly appreciated!
Surely I should get my name back or at the very least get the £8 a spent on the kitten name change???

Firstly on the three years part: If you would have used the offensive name originally as your main alt, it would have been reported by a player a lot sooner than it has been now.
Secondly: The £8 – you lost it yourself I’m afraid. It was your choice, not ArenaNet’s that you chose to use your £8 to break the ToS. I very much doubt you’ll get a refund.
Thirdly: The name change contract: Since you’ve actually been forced a name change contract – you’ve actually got more value for money, since indirectly you’ve had two uses of the same contract when most of us only get one!
Just try to be more careful next time – swear worded and naughty names will always get forced a name change no matter how long it takes – and some people get a ban for theirs, so at least you only got the forced name change!

The fact that the text filter changed your name to “kitten” is a sign that isn’t not an acceptable name. There’s no sense in submitting a ticket, because it’ll just be rejected.
“tree kitten”
Whatever your name was, the forums don’t like it either.

I’m not sure what the word was that was replaced by “kitten” in your post but since the forum filtered it, it is probably against ToS. The length of time you have had the name means nothing. It comes down to when it was caught by Anet. If you feel your name was taken away unjustly you can submit a support ticket.
For more information on the naming policy see this link:

You can’t get your name back. The best thing is to think think ahead next time and don’t use profanity in your name.

I think it’s fair to say, the reason your name was force changed is because it breaks the rules.
I mean, part of your name is even filtered here. Someone reported your name, and you probably just got very lucky to have it as long as you did. (also, games not 3 years old).

What if the OP’s mesmer name really was “Tree kitten” and not just something from the forum filter?

What if the OP’s mesmer name really was “Tree kitten” and not just something from the forum filter?
Then the OP would not have had a reason to post here because that name isn’t against the naming policy.

Wow. You’re the destroyer of hopes. Hope the OP can find another name now.
You likely didn’t encounter anyone who took the time to report your name until recently, so it’s more likely that you went under ANet’s radar than your name just suddenly became unacceptable.

The naming policy isn’t complicated. You break it, you deal with the consequences.
Some people have trouble accepting that the rules apply to them. If you’re one of those, be glad the lesson didn’t cost much. I have friends who had to learn it in a courtroom.

Complaining about a name change isn’t overreacting? When the naming policy is clearly spelled out and even the forums censor the name? Meh.
Quick OP, name yourself “Tree Kitten”!
Exactly what I was thinking.

Dont think it matters, it got the point across. You broke the rules, deal with it. Well, not really you, but the OP.
I kind of want to know what the name was now. I mean, I can’t think of anything starting with “Tree x….” that simultaneously violates the filter, and is witty or clever. I can only assume the OP is an idiot.
Just had an idea after reading the other banned names in the thread. Was it Tree Fugger? If that says Tree kitten after I post, I’m going to assume I got it right.

If only we had a list of words that got turned into kitten by the kittinizer. It would be so helpful right now!

That does not say anything.
I mean, Type the short version of ‘Is it not’ and you get a lot of kitten. In fact the whole text filter seems like a bad system not belonging in a free world (While I see one good reason to use it, what I will come back to later). Of course Anet can use it but it does not really make it any better.
The main reason to not use a system like this is because it’s all language depended. There are many words being kittened in English that you can typed in another language without problems but also words that are perfectly fine, but if you type them in another language they become a ‘bad’ word in English.
Just as two examples. Use google translate to translate the sentence ‘you can do that’ from English to Dutch. Now imagine that Dutch people have completely normal conversation or even want to use that word in names.
Another even better example. We have this item in the game named Polla, implemented by Anet. Now use google translate to translate the word Polla from Spanish to English.
If anything, these examples proof the nonsense of such a list, on the other hand, when I would create an MMO I would also want to implement such a list because stupid name can completely destroy the immersion of a game. If people run around with names like ‘kitting kitten to kitten’ or fill up the chat with a lot of kitten that damages the game for other people, not because they read ‘bad’ words but because it destroys the immersion. Just as much as things like ‘boss x will spawn in 5 min’ will do btw.
The best way imho opinion would be to implement a editable list. That is default on and has default words in it, but players can change it in the way they want (so also make words on the default list visible again). They can not only ban words but also edit to what it should be changed. Of course now people can change normal words to strange ones but then they only destroy the emersion for themselves.
I would not put people at work banning people, no word or sentence is reason for a ban but if they see childish, immersion breaking names those names simply get added to the default list and changed into something else childish but not / less immersion breaking.
That is imho the only correct way to solve this in a free world.
If only we had a list of words that got turned into kitten by the kittinizer. It would be so helpful right now!

My charr’s name: Aint Kitten. What its original name could be is all up to you
This explains it, thread was moved to Account & Technical Support. So looks like they actually did change it “three years” ago, it just took time for the lag to catch up…
Problem solved.

Thanks, she is used to my doing stuff like that though. Trying to explain stuff that I find hilarious. I suppose it does not help that the clock flips over about the time she gets home (I get home first) so it looks like I have been frantically playing all afternoon.

Breaking the rules is breaking the rules.
Getting a name change is totally the same thing as appearing in court on criminal charges. The comparison is not at all stupid and overboard.
Submit a ticket asking for a second opinion,
I did the same thing when they banned my name, Useless In Panties. The GM that viewed my ticket determined my name did not breach the rules and returned my name to my character.

I doubt a name that is filtered on the forums will be deemed appropriate. If it were a string of letters found in some words…maybe. One word that the forum filter catches?…not so much.
Regardless, always use care and good judgment in naming characters, and familiarize yourself with the Naming rules.
Good luck.
