Hi, I’ve been having this problem ever since I purchased the game, it happens randomly from a few minutes after I start playing, to about an hour. The game freezes, then goes black then comes back with about 19-25 fps when I usually play at about 60. After a few minutes it goes back to 60, but it happens again in the same timeframe after the first time. I’m running the latest Nvidia drivers. I have no issues with any other games.

I’m using a GTX 680

It runs at about 45~ Celsius consistently, and I’m running the most recent beta drivers.

Stress test your system (See Part 5.1)

Try rolling back to previous driver versions. ( e.g 306.97)

I’m having the same problem only I’m running an ATI card. I tried rolling back on drivers but same problem. It doesn’t make any sense either, I’ll be getting 45-55 frames then suddenly it freezes…goes black and I then have 20-22 frames. Max. I have no idea wtf is going on and I just bought this card literally a few days ago.

I experience this problem as well. Only happens in GW2. Sometimes it happens in combat, sometimes when I’m just idling around. The game freezes for a few seconds, screen turns black, then I have bad framerate even though I usually get 60fps with room to spare.

I monitored my GPU usage and noticed that when this happens, my GPU memory speed drops down to 324MHz. I have an overclocked GTX 670, and that 324MHz is not a typo. It is usually around 3,100MHz. I believe that this 324MHz is the same speed as the card’s “low power 2D” mode. It would appear that when this failure happens, Windows stops realizing that a 3D application is running.

If I alt+tab and load the EVGA PrecisionX tool (my video card’s overclocking utility) and then force it to reload the speed profile, I can alt+tab right back into GW2 and speeds are normal. 60fps with everything maxed, GPU usage at only around 80%.

This is not a thermal problem. I run a custom fan profile that keeps my GPU from ever hitting 70C even under 100% stress (the card is designed to go up to 90C with only a mild underclocking between 70C and 90C).

CPU usage is irrelevant. Before and after the bug, it rarely hits 30% total usage.

I put 180 hours on Skyrim in the last 3 months, and I play League of Legends almost every day. This does not happen in those games and appears to be GW specific.

Win 7 x64, for what it’s worth.

My best guess is that GW2 runs some sort of watchdog service to prevent hacking (I know WoW did this), and when this video glitch happens, it steals focus from the main app, Window sees that the process with exclusive access is a 2D app, and stays in low power mode. Again, just a guess. This fix works, but it shouldn’t be necessary. I’ve got no problem tabbing out when I’m roaming the fields but I’d be mighty upset if this happened during an epic battle/dungeon/InsertEndgameContentHere.

GW2 seems just to be “overly secure” about heat and clock frequencies compared to any other program/game i have installed. or maybe it’s just a bug…

it even crashes on bad CPU calculations after 15 minutes ingame while trying out different OC profiles, then it terminates and the “overclocking problem-Guild Wars”-website pops up, while prime95 doesn’t show any errors/BOSD/freeze after hours

so i stopped using prime95 to stresstest my system…now i play GW2 to do this instead :P

to fix the “overheating” throttle, i am always running “MSI Afterburner” with a custom fan-speed curve before launching GW2, because anything higher than 79°C for longer than 5 minutes results in a 50-75% frame limitation which forces me to restart the game.

I have exact the same problem as Vic Bond.6549. I can not describe it more better than he have.
I use graphic card Gainward 660ti with win7 64bit and my problem seems to start when set graphic in gw2 to best apearence.

My problem is reproducable every time I go to Lion’s Arch. Probably the most graphic demanding area in the game. My screen got blank and memory clock drops to 324MHz. It can also happen in other areas but not so frequent.

I have no other problem then in gw2. I can can run graphic card stress test like Furmark or 3DMark 11 and there is no problem with graphic card.
In Furmark test my card temeperature goes to 85 degrees in 15 min and power usage is 120% and still my card work perfect, until I run GW2.

I am also suffering from the same problem. It’s really annoying as it can happen during fights, which leads, more often than not, to my character dying when the game continues.

I am having crash with my 660. Game looks great for about 10 seconds, then just standing in a low-pop area makes the game freeze, screen goes black except for my mouse cursor for about 10-20 seconds, then comes back at a locked-in 10 frames per second. Also 2 out of 10 times I simply get a black screen, no restart. But the 8 out of 10 times when I get the black screen it also restarts

What I tried:
- Updated bios to newest version
- Open the desktop, check the fans and everything
- Windows 7 64, I made the updates
- Running 310.90 Driver. I have tried ALL DRIVERS (included the beta).

System Specs: –
EVGA – GeForce GTX 660 2GB GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 Graphics Card- 1920×1080 Screen Resolution
- Hd Seagate Barracuda 500gb 7200 Rpm 16mb Cache Sata 6.0gb/s
- Fonte Corsair 600w Builder Series 600cxv2 Pfc Ativo80%
- Cooler Master Haf 912 Plus Rc-912p-kkn1 – Box
- Corsair XMS3 16GB kit (2×8GB) DDR3 PC3-12800 (1600MHz) Memory
- Intel Core i5 3470 Quad Core Processor: 3.20GHz, 6MB L3 Cache, On-Chip Graphics, Socket 1155- Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3H

I post a message in EVGA forum without success.

I am very dispointented with 660, Arenanet, EVGA e NVidea. Because this kind of problem, i thinking in came to play games in console.

The game going to a black screen and then returning at a lower frame rate is a system problem. Basically your graphics driver crashed and was restarted by the OS. Thats why it blackscreens.

Graphics driver crashes/restarts are commonly caused by over-stressed components, ie GPU overheat or “dirty” voltages from the PSU fluctuating due to excessive load.

There is nothing Anet can do to resolve this, as its a system fault with the players computer. Ive had it many times with other titles on my old AMD card (Batman Arkham for instance) when its heavily stressed and running flat out. My solution was to add more cooling and clear out the fans I have on the system and on the GPU.

I had the exact same issue. The nvidia driver would crash constantly and on recovery I would get about 10 fps. My graphics card came overclocked by default so I installed their utility program and set the gpu to a normal clock speed. Since then I haven’t had any issues.
