I was talking to one of my guildies and he mentioned that my boyfriend’s computer’s CPU might be bottlenecking his GPU. Here’s the current build:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955
GPU: Sapphire Radeon 7850 OC Ed.
PSU: NZXT 550W
MoBo: ASUS M5 A97 R2.0
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2×4GB)

If it is, what would be a good replacement for the graphics card?

And which resolution do you use?

7850 is enough for 1080P
Also it is a monster overclocker – if you get it to 1100 core clock + or maybe 1200 then you have 7950

I would change your CPU – for this game get i5 4***

well we were thinking to just replace his gpu while i use his current gpu, because my i7-3770 would be able to utilize more efficiently, if that’s the case

it would also be cheaper, i think?, to replace the gpu

i also don’t think that we want to try overclocking, at least for now

So you want a better GPU for your i7 so your boyfriend will use 7850? Or will you keep 7850 with i7 and buy new GPU for yopur boyfriend (phenom)?

I would go with R9 280X or GTX 770 – cheaper one for i7
For phenom II 7790 or R7 265 (7850) or maybe R9 270 is good…

anyway in WvW large zergs even i7 is bottleneck … 7850 should maintain at least 45FPS

yeah, we’re considering keeping the 7850 for myself (i7) and getting him a new gpu (phenom)

yeah i understand in wvw i shouldn’t expect much. but i’d like to experience the game in at least medium settings -.- lol

But also 7770 will run this game on medium settings

I think you are a little confused, the GPU is the graphics card, you need the upgrade the CPU, not the GPU, AMD has far worse single thread performance than Intel right now and GW2 sees the most gains from CPUs with high single thread performance. Save the money and upgrade to a Intel system, if you get a higher end GPU for his system, I assure you that you will be disappointed with the results.

What are the specs of your system?

Are you talking about “downgrading” the GPU to match the CPU?

GPU upgrade is indeed cheaper since you have to get a new motherboard and potentially new RAM and a new copy of Windows should you want to upgrade the CPU.

You don’t need wonders for this game from the graphics card, but I don’t suggest buying the lowest that “matches” with that CPU, the performance per dollar ratio isn’t there and if you someday decide to upgrade the rest you don’t have to buy a GPU again. Radeon HD 7790 or better is solid for this game, the better you get the longer you’re able to use it. Use this list as a reference.

this seems like the optimal solution for the OP, though if the 7790 is out of stock, consider the slightly faster refresh of the 7790, the r7 260x

I wouldn’t suggest that, it might cut it at 1600×900 low/medium settings. HD 7790 is going somewhere near $120, used to be $99 at the end of the last year, not too big of an investment.
