I currently have 2 GTX 470’s, but they are not SLI’d at the moment as I do know, or as far as I know, GW2 doesn’t work well with SLI. With that said, Its getting rather frustrating that I feel the need to stop playing every 5 minutes because my GTX 470 is running at an average speed of 90c! Which.. ok, technically thats ‘ok’, but thats when I am standing still!! Not even a single spell effect going off, not any movement except for 2mobs patrolling in the background..

Makes me rather sad, and just curious if anyone has any tips on what I can do about this, as my options are on “Best Preformance”, everything low, and extra’s turned off to boost preformance, and still.. 90c average!

Edit:: Also, I have the frames limited to 60fps.

SLI works great with the latest beta drivers from Nvidia, go for it.

I’d also make sure you have proper ventilation and that your GPU fans are actually kicking in. MSI Afterburner is a great utility to monitor and even set a custom fan profile.

If that is 90 degrees Celsius I would be concerned, its right at the top end of what a card can do and may be damaging the hardware if running that hot for extended periods of time. since I have a GTX560 running the game at absolute max on about 50 degrees C in a SFF case (considering my card is about the same if not worse in performance) there is something wrong there, if you have custom built your PC it may be worth ensuring fans have good airflow and no cable mess in the way, dust can also make PCs overheat.

If you’ve got 2 cards in (which you have) it sounds like you’ve got ventilation issues. Either heat build up in case or, and more likely, the cards just don’t have enough air due to their spacing.

Take one card out and see how the temperatures are then, if it’s vastly improved then the card was previously being suffocated for airflow.
Improving that can be awkward, some cooling designs don’t consider having another card close by. It might be a matter of changing coolers or trying to force feed the card/s air.

Alright.. So, by removing my second card, as.. i discovered it wasn’t actually doing much as there seems to be something.. wrong with my Second PCI slot, since I tested it with one card, GPU Temp was a nice 85c – 88c, I was only getting 13fps! As soon as I switched it to the first PCI slot, I am getting 60’ish fps, 47 when I put my Second Monitor onto the first card.. so, I’ve Frame Limited GW2 to 30fps, and turned off shadows. Which leaves me at about 87c and without a video card… and 30fps.
Blows hardcore, since the only thing I could do now is put on a bigger/better side fan, which wouldn’t do much since the Tower is stuck in alittle comparment, but.. tests from both outside and inside have shown only about 1c difference in temp between the two. Outside the Compartment being the cooler one, that is.
Edit:: Also, the cards weren’t -that- close together, my SLI’d GTX 570’s on another comp are much closer together than in this case, and I’ve seen a general temp increase while playing GW2 with those as-well, during the beta’s I would average in the mid 70’s, but now on Launch I’m seeing temps of high 70’s-low 80’s (On that set up).
And.. whenever I double space in this post.. it seems to duplicate everything before it..

Seems like you totally ignored Bill’s post to setup custom fan profiles in MSI Afterburner. Have fun with those hot cards…

Also, SLi working perfectly with the new Nv 306’s.

Hope this helps…

I’ve spent a fair amount of time researching my 470’s temps as well, and in a nutshell here’s what I found. The 470’s Threshhold is 105°c. Sustained heats of 100°c or more could cause damage over a long period of time. Fermi Architecture runs super hot, this is par for the course. My full load temps (>90% load) are 92°-94°c. At one point my temps were 100°-106° and I was having lock ups. After disassembling the card and cleaning the filthy stock heatsink and fan, temps went back down to low 90s.

So long story short:
low 90s, normal.
mid 90s, might need a cleaning or better ventilation/case cooling.
high 90s or over 100, watch out, this could cause damage to the card if used for long periods of time.

Please note this ONLY apply to Fermi 400 Series! The 500 and 600 have a much cooler and more power efficient architecture, and much lower heat threshholds. I can’t think of any other card on the planet that runs as hot as these without frying out.

lol! I am using EVGA Precision, and at no point did I completely ignore a post from a Dev. With that said.. I’m not going to crank my fans up to 100%, they are running at about 65% without me modifying them, so I bumped them up to 75%

Now, the information about the Normal Temps of the cards is mucho useful! Thank you! I don’t feel so bad now xD

Yep, I’ve done the same research and that about sums it up.

Some of the wild custom design cards like the MSI Twin Frozrs get better results in regards to temps and cooling, but if you’re talking about the reference design 470 and 480 cards.. yeah they run bloody hot and it’s entirely normal.

I myself have a GTX 470 SC from EVGA and on autofan it will go upto 90-95 degrees at 100% useage. So I use a custom fan profile in EVGA Precision that aims to keep the fan between 60% and 80%, which keeps the temperature at full load just under 83 degrees. I think that’s a nice compromise between heatstress and wear and tear on the fan.

Ofcourse I’ve had plenty of people tell me my card runs too hot even at 83 degrees and it’s always an uphill battle trying to explain to them that some cards just run much hotter than others and not all cards have the same temperature limits.

I will say one thing for this card though – it does a great job of heating the room in the winter.
