I was able to remain in the 60+ degree range when i started playing this game when it first started but just like maybe a week plus ago my gtx 580 temp just suddenly shot up to 80+ after few mins of gaming n this was happening at the beginnning level area n there wasnt much ppl around like it first started but the temp is so much different now. I have clean my pc n reapply thermal paste on my gpu n the temp is still the same…..

  • Are you sure you didn’t apply to much paste?
  • You tighten all the screws (not to much just hand tight)
  • The heat sink is straight on the card/GPU/board. Not bend or maybe tilted a little
  • Your heat sink fins are clean and not sticking together? (maybe you squeezed to hard?)
  • Your fan is working properly? (check msi afterburner or Nvidia config)

Other games like? BF3? Or maybe Crysis or something.

And have you tried different settings? Maybe it is a bug in GW2 (wouldn’t be the first) and on lower settings you can safely play. Although 70+ is a oke temp the fan must be annoying.

Good luck

80 degrees is about normal for a stock nvidia cooler. My 570 was running at around 84c at stock speeds on a stock cooler, Guild Wars 2 is one of the few games that maxes GPU usage for me, so i rarely see that in other games.

If you want to bring your temps down, id suggest getting an aftermarket cooler. I use an Arctic Accelero Turbo II on mine now, temps rarely go above 65ish.

I will note however, 80c isn’t dangerous for GPU’s, they can handle over 100c, it just runs noisy :P

Thats true, as i said. But, the thing that got me was that at once it was much much hotter than it normally was.

the temp is only a few degree difference for low setting n the area that is the same place where i am leveling when i just started when this game first started but the difference in the temp was like close to 20 degree in just a week plus ago T.T sobz.. sobz…. n oh ya the fan is annoying as i increase the speed to lower down the temp for now n the sound makes me feel like smashing the pc

GW2 can push a GTX580 to 80-90C pretty easily, if you’re not CPU bound.

I put an Antec Kuhler 620 on mine and it doesn’t exceed 60C oc’d to 900MHz GPU 2100 Mem.

My GTX 560ti Gigabyte Super OC edition runs at 99% usuage much of the time, i run on 1920×1080 res on max(ultra) settings on everything apart from sampling which is on native. I get good FPS between 40+ all the time (pve fights included) and 50+ frequently. I havnt tried WvW yet due to the hacks and cheats still running amock.

My temperature at max hits 75c but usualy hovers around 65-70c.
I use EVGA precision for a custom ‘steped’ fan speed curve.
It runs at default 40% speed till temps reach 55c then fan goes to 50%, then at 60c it goes to 60%, 70c to 70%, 75c to 80%, after that its just a precaution i have it set so at 80c it goes to 100% (which it has never done)

Now if your 580 is a standard Nvidia one, then that would explain the high temperatures. if its from another make.. like gigabyte or MSi, asus etc, then it should be able to run cooler. Maybe you should give it a clean, chances are it could just be dust buildup on the fan, vents, and/or heatsink.
To be honest though i would only start worrying if the temps went above 85c. These gpu’s are rated for more, but i personaly dont like high temps.

Sorry that i didnt reply for so long because I was busy with work. Really thankz all the kind soul for their help. I have order the Accelero Xtreme Plus II, so I guess that should solve my problem. But I still feel wierd that I was able to play this game at the start with no heat issue as I was using GTX 580 Twin Frozr II n then 1 week plus ago then my heat issue pop up n I have done all the cleaning n checking n reapplying thermal paste. So I guess this is the GW2 problem? Since this is what I concluded from my search on the forum as I am not the only one.

Overheating video cards are never a problem with a game, it is a problem with the video card. A video card can only give %100… and if that %100 overheats then it is the cards problem.

lol o really. that’s why last week i was playing at 80 degrees max in wvw and now i’m hitting 102? the only thing on my system changed was nvidia driver and gw2 update. i’ve already reapplied thermal paste on both cpu and gpu and still i’m getting 90 degrees at character select.

Things that happen over night is usually the sign of a piece of hardware failing. Any funny noises from the fan? Did you try and see if there were any apps available to make sure the fan speed was maxed out? You never really posted YOUR hardware specs Sleep so I have no idea what you are running.

both wrong^^. it’s the culling, everyone has already figured it out lol. i’m on phenom x4 gtx 560, not a kittening noob so don’t tell me to clean my case underclock undervolt or anything stupid i’ve already gone through every single step you’ll probably list. and if the card was failing i would have higher temps on other games also or with extended monitor but this is not the case. only gw2 hits 100 degrees and only when there is obvious culling going on. bf3 stays below 75, gta i4 modded stays at 75, borderlands 2 is at 75. gw2 stays at 75 till action starts. happened the day of the 306.97 drivers which was also the same 24 hour period as the latest patch. also the gpu temp drops 40 degrees when i alt tab during culling. don’t need any more apps, already have msi afterburner and precision and amd overdrive and speedfan.

obviously nothing changed with my pc over night if your too dull to understand please leave the thread you’re not contributing to fixing our problem.

Culling is only causing heavier load

Load should cause a rise in temperature but not cause Overheating

and if the card was failing i would have higher temps on other games

not necessarily. Load = Heat, more load = more heat.
most graphics cards are not designed to have every transistor operating at a single given time, so they are more designed around the idea that parts of the device are in the off state when others are in the on. However, even when all parts are put in the on state, temperature should still be kept at a manageable level.

really i don’t see GW2 pushing the gpu to higher temperatures than Furmark or occt, which should still be under the overheat mark (95c)

Sleep, please keep in mind that we are trying to fix your mis understandings. Culling creates a lot of load, yes, actually it is the lack of culling you are referring to. The act of culling is when the gpu works out parts of the scene it does not need to render. If the engine was not culling as much as it should and rendering a lot of terrain it didn’t need to then this would create a load you normaly wouldn’t see in games.

That said, my statement still stands. The BEST GW2 can ask of your video card is %100 of its processing power, and if your cpu is not a bottleneck then your gpu will GIVE %100 of its processing power to render the ever loving god out of guild wars. But this is all within the design constraints of the video card, the video card should be designed to safely and reliably give %100 of itself to a game. Guild wars CANNOT under NO CIRCUMSTANCES ask your card to exert more then %100 and damage itself. YOU possibly could through the driver using overclocking, but this is a user controlled feature and the game has no access to overclocking.

I’m going to assume you have tried to cleaned out your PC, checked that the fans are spinning at max speed, and reapplied thermal paste to your GPU. The only other idea I can throw out is check your case fans, maybe one of those was feeding outside, cooler air to the GPU and perhaps that is no longer happening.

Personally, 80C isn’t too bad, 90C is when you get worried and take precautions.

Holy necro batman, this was back b4 i even entred WvW lol..how things have changed :P

Anyhoo, i wouldnt worry till u hit the 90c mark. Granted 80-90c is rather warm but its still within safety. As above, check those things 1st. Software will never cause this type of issue, it will only show up a already present hardware issue (gone of TIM, faulty cooler, poor airflow, faulty GPU etc).

Eh…better to necro the thread than start a new one for the same issue. At any rate I’ll double check everything. Thought there may have been a driver issue since the problem was sudden and I was getting blue screen of death, but only on GW2. Thanks for the replies.

Well, what codes were you getting for your BSOD, it might not even be the graphics card causing the problem.

Kinda too lazy to read all the posts so I’ll skip and put my two cents in
MY TFII 6950@6970 shader unlocked and overclocked card behaves the same, heats up like a pig on a treadmill on GW2 even though it’s not used 100% but it never goes beyond 72C no matter what game I play since I changed my case tho. So first thing I’d suggest is to make sure that you have good ventilation in your case you would wanna exhaust that hot air out of your case so make sure you have enough exhausting because non reference Graphics Cards will be exhausting all that heat inside your case. Plus did you clean the gpu and heat sink with alcohol just to make sure none of the old paste is left? If you applied new paste on the old one that will not work.
