DISCLAIMER: This topic isn’t strictly GW2 related.

I’ve seen this issue come up in a lot of FPS (first person shooter) games, but so far not in this game. I have a new Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX970 and while I don’t get this jitter in-game as such (yet), I am getting it in some mp4’s, wmv’s and avi files that I’ve downloaded from TV shows like Mythbusters or something similar.

I’ve tried sorting this out at different resolutions, different screen sizes, etc. but so far no fix. The only real search for this issue on any search engine is almost 100% game-related. I can’t find much info on this asides what I’ve mentioned above, so really this is a call for your experiences with the GTX970 card. If you have one can you let us know what your frames are like and if you have the same jitter/twitch that inevitably most/all GTX970 card owners seem to face.

Hey, running the same card (x2) and have not noticed anything like that. First thing you should do is update the bios on the G1 and install the latest nvidia drivers. Next download and run latencymon while listening to your music/gaming. If something is causing latency spikes -which is usually the case with audio jitter/stutter- it will show you what is causing it

may I ask. what kind of power supply you have. as gtx 970s eat power.
(I am asking as most ppl use a cheaper lower quality PSU then get a very powerfull GPU and wonder why it runs slow / not at all). a decent 750W + is normally recomended
and do you use the correct power cables at the back of your GPU as it needs them aswell.

did you install your card properly to the PCIE slot and secured it correctly ? did u make sure no dust or grime was in the PCIE slot / on the gold contacts of the card?

did you un install all graphic card drivers and making sure your system is clear of old driver files still in folders and then installed a fresh uptodate driver from NVidia ?

in your NVidia control panel did u set power usage to “prefer maximum power” as adaptive causes power saving

ingame options gw2 – the frame rate limiter is known to cause stuttering if u limit it to 60 fps (or what ever refresh rate you use) setting it to unlimited then using Vsync removes the stutter and the game does not go beyond 60 fps
(high end graphics cards no longer have the drops to 30 fps when fps goes below 60 with vsync enabled cos it can produce 2-4x that and no longer affects games in that way anymore.)

also do u have a modern CPU and have u over clocked it ? do u use effective cooling ?

your PC case is it designed for modern gaming GPU or is it a standard of the shelf case with 1 little fan ? (a modern gaming case is much larger then a standard case for high air flow and can house 5-9 cooling fans outside + inside the case).

unless we have more info on your set up we cant help u a lot

Thanks for the replies.

Nick, I downloaded Latencymon and apparently all good – “Your system appears to be suitable for handling real-time audio and other tasks without dropouts”. What worried me a bit was the hard pagefault count over 5mins was up to 100. I’ve no idea what is considered normal here so I just left it alone.

Regarding the bios version, I’m on stock bios settings which is ver. 84.04.2F.00.81 so I’m not sure which version I’m supposed to be downloading from the link that you put up. Thanks much for those btw.

krixis, it’s a new system and I only got what I figured would be appropriate for the hardware, which is a Corsair HX750i PSU, which is full modular so I kinda have to connect the right power cables for it to work. I only have one of these cards so it’s not like I’m running an SLi setup, or I would have reconsidered my PSU options.

Going down the list: (I’m a PC tech so this is all basic) yes, yes/yes, old GPU drivers were ATI so yes obviously I had to uninstall them before getting these ones in, ‘max power’ check, I used to not run Vsync in GW2, and as I said in the OP I’m not having issues with the game with this twitching thing, but like I said mp4’s, avi’s, etc. Interesting point with 60fps dropping to 30, cos that’s exactly what mine does in the Heaven benchmark prog. Anything that passes close by on a pan the FPS auto dips to 30 instead of 60. Yes, Vsync enabled.

It’s an Intel i7-4790K (4GHz) on turbo mode (10% OC = 4.4GHz), being run with Corsair H80i water cooling and Noctua PWM fans throughout (except the 200mm case fans). I’ve created a positive pressure environment in the Zalman GS1200 case and there’s a lot of space to fill in there. FYI, 1 base fan (120mm), 1 side case fan (200mm), 1 top case fan (200mm), 2 x front case fans (92mm) all acting as air intakes. The exhaust fans are 2 × 120mm NF-F12 Noctua fans push-pull config’d, cooling the CPU. All put together, the system barely puts out 35dBA.

Hope that answers your questions.

No problem, its definitely extremely confusing the way they did it but its easy to check the one you need with their @bios flashing utility -which you need to flash anyways. The part you need to check is the last digits on the bios string (F1, F10 or F50).
As for the issue, what kind of ram are you using? If its 16gb or more and/or over 1866MHz I highly recommend a small bump to the System Agent voltage (CPU SA) in your motherboard bios. Try setting it to 1.0v and testing again. Also while you’re there make sure you motherboard bios is up to date as well

Edit- Forgot to ask but which board and sound card are you running?

It’s Corsair Vengeance Pro 1866MHz (16Gb). Mobo BIOS is up-to-date, no worries there, but I’m afraid I’m still a bit confused on the nVidia BIOS update. You said the last digits (which in my case are ‘81’), but the only reference to ‘F’ is in the 3rd lot of digits, preceding ‘00’. Thus my confusion. I’m still at a los as to which one (of the three available) I should be downloading.

The motherboard is Asus Maximus VII Hero. Sound was originally onboard but the chip made it sound muddy as hell so I went for a Sound Blaster Z instead. Good purchase as it turns out so far.

Ok so after a lot of digging I found out what version of BIOS my graphics card is running (it’s not readily available by checking the System Information from the nVidia control panel). No, I had to get the Maxwell BIOS tewaker which told me my BIOS version (not found through regular methods) was actually F10. There’s no update for F10 yet; the only supported update files are for F3, F42 and F51 which isn’t me.

So now I’ll tweak the System Agent voltage and see if it makes a difference.

I’ve since made a discovery with the video. While making no actual changes to the system setup, it’s managing to display DivX-encoded files without incident. I’m therefore going to presume that Windows Media Player might be at fault for the jittery playback, since it’s the ONLY time I can get it to replicate.

Are there any quick fixes for this, or anyone heard of WMP going a bit wrong on some video cards? I have K-Lite codec pack already installed so I doubt that would fix it.
