Hey!

I run GW2 on GTX970+i74790k with 600W PSU, 500 GB Samsung HDD, 60 Hz monitor and Z97-K Asus motherboard.

All of my settings are set to low except for shaders which are put on high+my CPU is OC’d up to 4.6 ghz, tempratuares are fine.

I play this game in massive WvW threesomes with around 50 FPS but with Effect LODs being turned on (reduces blooming+particle effects of CCs)

If I turn Effect LOD off I get down to 20 FPS in the same fights. What could be the problem here?

EDIT: A friend of mine told me that running the game on an SSD might help…?

If the 20fps you refer to is during massive zergs then you are getting good fps. The standard for most players is around 10 during these types of fights.

One option to look at is the Player level and Player detail levels…also Reflections (for these set to Terrain/Sky if it is currently set to All).

There’s a reason why Effect LODs is turned on by default for all presets.

There’s not a problem. Enabling effect LOD reduces the amount of effects rendered, so the cpu doesn’t have to do such amount of work, specially in WvW fights where there is tons of AoE skills with particle effects.

I’m running the game on Max Settings (super sampled at 4k) and I have a GTX 970 a i5 3570k and 8 GB ram.
I get around 70+ fps.. something is wrong with your set up. Did you install all the drivers for your CPU your motherboard and your GPU?

20-30 fps is normal in a big zerg fight for high end cpu. Only way to get better fps is get the 5820k setup.

You didn’t tell us anything about which version of OS you are running. Windows 10 TP can be unstable at the moment (for both video and audio) and the latest drivers (352.84) from nVidia are now for the first time WHQL approved to be working on pre-released Windows 10.

We would also need to know if you have enabled other features related to how your video card drivers work like 3D, PhysX and HD Audio (from video card).

Resolution would also be of importance kitten FPS or 60 Hz by itself doesn’t tell much about what kind of load there is to handle on your WvW measurement. Find a place on WvW map and reproduce your observation to make sure it is the same load that you would expect to be happen. It is also important to make clear if you use anything with an overlay (like TS3 Overwolf or FRAPS) in this game as it might also effect performance from video card.

The only part SSD (Solid State Disk) can help you with is loading information into RAM (and video card RAM; VRAM) and it will not have anything to do with FPS.

Why are this forum censoring normal English? Didn’t understand why it where so many “kitten” (thought it might be because some ppl abused some words) around these forums. It is annoying and very limiting for how to express oneself and I have never seen this kind of behaviour before on any forum that I have been a part of.

The biggest question – Do you see that FPS drop between IN and OUT of combat? LOD also affects aura’s and weapon effects too (Fiery, Chaos, Shadow effects…ect), so when you do get into combat its just that much worse as you are also rendering all the AOE and non-AOE special effects.

The other question, when you drop the FPS when LOD disabled, what is the Memory usage on your 970? use GPU-Z to figure that out if you don’t already know.

If you are jumping past the 2.5GB or 3.5GB (depending on which 970 you have) that could also be part of the reason. The 970’s are notorious for having issues when using that 512MB of ram that was partitioned out.

300 players on screen turns any cpu into a bottleneck. I found that lowering max characters displayed helps with this.

While what you say is 100% true, the issue he is asking about is LOD settings.

I just realized op meant fps drop during big fights. Again, I get around 20 fps on my set up for big fights and I don’t realm reduce any of my graphics settings (max). I don’t believe the issue is your in game graphics setup. If you are running Nvidia Experience software (which you should be) for your gpu then you should try modifying the settings there instead of in game. The software gives you alot more control in a more direct and less general aspect vs the in game graphics setting. You can also use a slider scale to set your preferences to performance. I found that if your Gforce experience software setting are set to “quality” vs “performance” even if you lower all graphics settings in game the software may still override some settings resulting in a performance drag.

That said if all you want to do is get higher fps then I suggest instead of lowering all your graphics setting that you simply lower your resolution. By default the resolution is set to 4k supersampled 1080p.. I get an additional 10fps just by using 1080p and disabling supersampling. If you want higher fps then you can easily go to 720p for a huge boost of about 20 fps. This all while keeping your graphic settings at max.
