Slight addition to nVu’s post.
This is following the steps (which are pretty clear).
1. Log in to GW2 site.
2. Link accounts, and enter the GW1 info. Works great so far. Takes us to the “are you sure you want to link, etc.” page.
3. Hit OK. and this is the step where everything falls apart.
After that it says the accounts are linked, but the display name is the string of characters. It also says “The following GW2 account information will now be used to log in to both games” and then lists my gw1 account instead of the gw2 account. As soon as I log out and check the profile again, nothing I just did was saved.
If I try to log in to the game before relogging after linking the accounts, the gw1 info it said it would use doesn’t work since there’s no serial number registered to that email, and the gw2 info won’t work because it “hasn’t been verified” (but after everything clears again, I can log in as normal with my gw2 email)
@TheaOchiMati
I am experiencing the exact same problem! I have no clue on what to do, it seems to be a bug on Anets part?
I have also submitted a ticket 2 days ago and am patiently waiting for a solution.

I have the same problem.. I bought Guild Wars yesterday and I linked it to my GW2. That’s what I thought I did.. But the problems I read here are the same as mine..
When I go to the HoM calculator it says that I have 3/50 points (3 are for linking my account).. That’s weird because I couldn’t link my accounts.. I can log in to GW1 with my GW1 account info and to GW2 with my GW2 account information. When I log in to my GW1 account it says that my account has been linked. And the email I should use is the email for my GW1 account.. But when I go to my GW2 account it says I have to link my account to a GW1 account…?
I’ve already send a email to CS.. I hope that they can help me out soon.. I really don’t like the idea of wasting €44,- :’(

As far as the HoM Reward Calculator goes, it always shows 3 points and says the accounts are linked, whether you have a linked account or not. It’s just built-in, and assumes anyone looking would have already linked their accounts. /shrug

Ah okay. The problem is still here tho.. :’( I hope I get a response from CS soon…
It’s fixed for me now. Had to send some extra information about my guild wars 1 account for security reasons, but overall the support team helped me really well (even keeping me up to date at Saturday and Sunday). Hopefully, they will fix the bug, because of the growing number of people returning to Guild Wars 1.

3 days since I mailed CS.. I hope they will help me out soon.. I really want to have my GW1 rewards in GW2..
Exact same problem for me! I sent a support ticket, although I cant find the original serial codes for GW1/GW2, hopefully it’ll be enough…
I’ve been playing Gw1 for the sole reason to get 50/50 HoM, I’m at 22 points and decided it was time to at least link them…
Please try a fix this, it seems to affect so many people.

I am having the same issue, and support has failed to help me.
“Thanks for contacting us! Your request (796090:Guild Wars 1 and Guild Wars 2 odd linking issues) has been received, and is being reviewed by our Support team.” – July 31
I explained the issue in detail and I was met with this response a few days later:
I checked into this for you and found that you do not have Guild Wars account “xxxxxxxxxx@ncsoft” linked to your Guild Wars 2 account ""xxxxxxxxx@xxxxxx.xx".
To link your accounts, please follow the instructions below.
1) Head to https://account.guildwars2.com/login
2) Click on “Link Accounts.”
3) Enter the name of the Guild Wars account you wish to link with your Guild Wars 2 account.
4) Enter the Password of that Guild Wars account.
5) Click “Link Account.”
What kind of help is that? I’ve already done that a dozen times and even referenced this forum thread prior to sending the ticket to support. I want this issue resolved as much as anyone, but an automated response like that shows just how low a priority this is for the support team.
I might try sending another ticket to support regarding this issue, but my faith is shaken.

Don’t send another ticket, but rather update your existing ticket explaining, again, the issue. Sometimes, it takes more than one try.
Good luck.

I’ll try that. I don’t usually do this forum/support stuff, but an issue’s an issue regardless if one understands it as such.

I am having exactly the same issue, I opened a ticket too. Just gotta wait and keep fingers crossed I suppose. :x

The issue was resolved for me. They linked my accounts and all I had to do was reset a password and it now works fine. Having them link it isn’t quite a permanent solution yet, so I wish the best to support and anyone else struggling with this odd issue!

Guess I should join this place too. I just bought GW1 and was trying to link it to my GW2 account here. But it gives me that long Display Name and thinks it isn’t linked.
Sent a support ticket before finding this thread so I hope it all goes well.
Thanatos, perhaps you could post the reset password info they gave you. Might be useful for some of us if that worked for you.

Guess im in this boat too. im having the exactly same problem.
Im trying to link my old , @plaync, account in my gw2 account with no success. Once i use that link account feature my display name changes to serial key and keeps like that till i logout.
Yeah ive alrdy sent support ticket but no answer yet.
I have the exact same problem with an alternative account and 3 friends have it too.
I’ll go ahead and contact support, but I was wondering if the problem would be solved or if we’d always need to contact support instead?
I have to admit it’s annoying since I don’t own all of the Gw1 account’s informations (such as CD keys or I don’t know what other kind of informations is needed) since I only have access to email (do we have to explain why? I mean there could be a lot of good reasons.. But I’m not going to talk about my friend’s personal problems which gave me the account).
Anyway, I’ll try to contact support to see if they can fix my own problem, which I doubt, and I’ll tell my friends to do that to, but I’d be more interested to know if the linking process problem will be fixed soon? It’s been a while that I try (I’d say 2 months).
Thanks for you answer!

It is against the ToS to use another’s Account, whether given, purchased, loaned, etc. You can find a copy of the rules below by clicking the Legal link. You might be better off getting your own copy of the game and attaining rewards. Good luck.

Yes please! If you are currently working with support, please do not start a new ticket.
The only exception I can think of is when a support agent suggests that your e-mail account may be compromised and when the agent directly asks you to submit a new ticket using a different, secure e-mail account.

Oh, so there’s no solution to that? I’ve spent time on those accounts to get the rewards in Gw2 and I’ve raised my HoM up to 30 for them!
Same problem with my 3 friends. :/
Should I even try to contact support?
Will it be ever fixed?

Will it be ever fixed?
ANet probably doesn’t consider it a “bug,” so they aren’t likely to think anything needs to be “fixed.”
I know it must be frustrating to have spent time and energy towards working on the HoM, only to be told the accounts cannot be linked. Sometimes RL is like that: no good options, only bad and worse ones.
In the “less bad” category: there appear to be a few sales of GW1 going on this week, so you might be able to pick up Trilogy (Prophecies/Factions/NF) for US$15 and an EotN bundle for another US$10. It will be annoying to have to go through all of it again, but then again, you won’t have to worry about someone “coming back” and claiming the account later.
Also: check with your friends/guildies in GW2: a lot of them have all sorts of “wealth” in GW1 that they aren’t using and can help you stock up your HoM. I just did that recently for a few of my friends, so the only time-consuming process will be completing enough of EotN to unlock the HoM (you can buy tapestries instead of completing quests).
Good luck.
It is a lot of time and energy, and I do understand that it’d be too “easy” to accept that everybody can legally link with a friend’s Gw1 account because as you said, he could come back, etc. and maybe it’s too difficult to organize what would be acceptable and what wouldn’t be.
Though I believe it is a real “bug”. Contacting support to link your account? Man I know what I’m talking about, most of the GMs don’t know what they’re talking about : like others on the forum, they say they can’t help or guide you to the regular process that you’ve tried several times in different ways. So it’s a bug, or a problem, whatever you call it, and wanted to know if it’d be back to normal soon.
And I’m not talking about all the work for the Gw2 staff to link ALL the next Gw1 accounts to their Gw2.
I don’t mean to be aggressive in this message, just want to know what’s the plans for the future concerning the linking process.

So, you are asking if they will fix the linking bug, so you can link to another’s Account without the help of CS? Yes, I’m sure they will, eventually.
Hopefully, you will never need the help of CS, because when using an Account while breaking the ToS, CS does not offer assistance.
Best of luck!
I’m have the same exact issue. I put in a ticket and I haven’t heard anything from support. This really sucks. I should have linked them a long time ago.

Hey guys, for what it’s worth I JUST had this issue (problem while linking, account name changing to look like a string of number/letters), I sent a ticket and it was solved just fine, just took a little while (3-5 days). They have to deal with a bunch of reports so it’s normal it takes time, but it definitely is a thing that they can and will fix.

It is not a linking bug to disallow linking between accounts owned by two people. Is that what you mean? Then no, that will not be “fixed” because linking is not permitted.
Frankly, I am a little confused by this thread. But again, we have no intention of enabling or helping people link to accounts that they do not own. Come on, that way leads to madness!
We will do our best to help people who own Guild Wars and and wish to link their own GW account to a Guild Wars 2 account that they also own. We will assist those who wish to link their GW2 account to a newly acquired or existing GW account that they own. But to say “I, Fred, want to link to an account (old, unused, given, resold, traded, whatever’d) owned by (registered by) Mary, can you help me?” is asking us to completely disavow our own User Agreement, the one that every account holder accepts before joining the game and the one that is binding to all players.

If those of you who are having linking troubles continue to have issues, please post in the Tickets for Review thread above, after three days. I encourage you to first try again in your ticket, explaining precisely what you need and what you are experiencing.
Please note: The process of linking is intended only to link your own GW account to your own GW2 account. You may not link to someone else’s account, nor to an account that is shared by multiple people, where each person is hoping to get the benefits of a single, shared account. See the UA for information about account sharing.
