GW2 crashes on login
Are you getting any error codes? Have you checked your crash logs? Also, could you post your specs?
This is the message that pops up when it crashes: http://img854.imageshack.us/img854/9051/screenshot20130603at111.png
Im using a version 10.6.8 Mac laptop with a 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 processor and 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory.
Okay, this is going to be a long one!
So it seems you’re just a but below the min requirements with your os, they recommend at least 10.7, and considering they’ve been “optimising” the client lately, it may be affecting it. However… As for your error, some peeps claim that unplugging the charger from the laptop, then trying to log in (on a character) while running on battery works for them, then plug back in afterwards. Some say this didn’t help them. Others claim running a repair worked, it didn’t for others. Then several also claim that an smc reset worked, but not for everyone… So, try the battery thing! If that works or doesn’t, I suggest filing a ticket either way and try to get some more light shed on this. Please post whatever fix that worked for you back here in case others have this issue.
In the meantime, I’m going to post our lengthy list of troubleshooting techniques for the Mac, you may try them if you wish. If you want to try them, read the list completely first.
Here it is (ready or not):
1.) run software update to ensure all drivers and os are up to date.
2.) try repairing disk permissions via Disk Utility first. Then…
3.) repair the client install
Open Terminal
Type the following:
/applications/guild\ wars\ 2.app/contents/MacOS/cider —use-dos-cwd C:Gw2 -- C:\\GW2\\GW2.exe -repair
You can copy and paste that in, but (check the dash) you must change the dash before the word USE or this will fail the forum shows an em dash (—), but it is supposed to be 2 consecutive en dashes (-). Run it and let it go until finished. FYI if you type the command yourself or paste it, they are 2 dashes (-) side by side… I’m noticing one sometimes looks like an em dash… It’s 2 en dashes though. (the dash before USE is 2 regular dashes)… Reiterated due to previous confusion about that dash on these forums.
4.)Perhaps after doing that, if it doesn’t work, you can try to delete the contents of the gw2 data folder, it’s a pain to get to the right one: this step is a general fix for many tp and some graphics issues, even without the previous steps
Mine is located under the hidden Library folder (navigate using finder, do not use spotlight to search)
/[yourharddrivename]/users/[yourusername]/library/application support/guild wars 2
You may want to copy/paste this folder to your desktop as a temporary back up, just in case.
Delete the contents of that specific folder (you should see files like this contained within “config, dyndata.dat, user.reg, userdef.reg, and folders p_drive and wineserver…namestuff…loca..[long name]” just to list a few), then re-run the client..
~~Your folder is probably hidden (as is the default). Hidden folders display as greyed out text and icons. I found this after googling:
http://m.wikihow.com/See-Hidden-Folders-on-Mac-OS-X-and-Other-Recent-Models
Others claim alt+clicking a file/folder unhides the contents, but that was never successful for me. (I think you need to open finder using alt+click) At least the link has visuals for you. Hope it helps.
5.) check support.mac.com for instructions on how to reset your pram and smc.
6.) If none of this works, check the sticky and submit a ticket, then please come back here and report the fix that worked for you.
Sorry I don’t have a specific “fix” for you, this issue manifests itself differently for different peeps on different comps, good luck and please keep us updated.
Thank you for your help, but so far no dice. Before posting, I tried updating my software, but that clearly didn’t help. I have power source issues, so I cant unplug my laptop (stupid, I know :P) and running the repair script didn’t change anything. Its getting late, and I’m not done with the list yet, so tomorrow when I have time I’ll return to this. Until then, thanks for your help and I’ll post whatever happens here, for good or ill.
First of all: What is your graphics card. Your Processor and RAM seem absolutely fine. Snow Leopard is unsupported but I think most people haven’t had any problems running GW2 on it. It only isn’t supported because apple no longer supports it.
Can I suggest you open up Disk Utility (Applications>>Utilities>>Disk Utility).
In the sidebar it should have “Macintosh HD” (Or whatever you have renamed your hard drive to if you’ve renamed it). Select that and there should be an option called “Repair Disk Permissions” Click that and let it run.
As to the power supply issue, is what you are saying that your battery has a very high cycle count and it can no longer run without being plugged into power? A lot of people have confirmed that unplugging from the power source fixes some issues, so if this is the problem then you might be a bit screwed.
The only other suggestion I can give to you is to do an SMC reset:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
Follow the instructions on there. Make sure you follow the CORRECT instructions. As in make sure you select the instructions for either a MB with a removable batter or one without – I don’t know what model your mac is so I can’t help you out with that.
Technical Support
Hi Rathayibacter – The only fixes for this issue I’ve seen have been to either launch with the power cable unplugged (for laptop users) or deleting the GW2 folder which it looks like you’ve already been given the steps for. Aside from this, I’d highly recommend updating to Lion or Mountain Lion if you’re able as this may not necessarily be the cause of the issue but it could certainly be a contributing factor.
I’ve gone down the list of recommendations, but so far nothing has changed. GW2 still crashes while loading character select. I haven’t yet upgraded to Mountain Lion for two reasons: one is that I still dont even know if it will work, and the other is that even if it does work, I plan to get a new (non-Mac) laptop within a month and so it would ultimately be wasted. If I do wind up giving in and buying it, then I’ll be sure to update this thread as to whether that worked, but until then thank you all for your help. Goodnight.
Or if you purchase a new battery, you could test the plug issue. They typically run about $100 or so from the Mac store for removable batteries, otherwise, it needs to be serviced by a qualified person. But keep us posted if you happen to try anything that works before your new comp.
