GW2 just recently started overheating my cpu?

I’ve seen people talk about this late last year… i took a break from GW2 and then i come back and now all of a sudden it heats my cpu up to 90-110c and even has caused my pc to shut down to protect itself… I’ve played GW2 since launch with no issues just bout at max settings, Why cant i now?
Also its not a dust problem as i play other games such as Black ops 2 fine with no cpu issues.. What is causing this?

Software cant cause a overheat.
All this means is that ur CPU is unable to stay cool at high usuage. This indicates a cooling problem on ur end.
Make sure the cooler is clean.. make sure the fans are working, make sure they r going at max speed when they need to.
Check ur case’s air flow, if it has dust filters clean them, Make sure u have plenty of air flow coming in from the front/side/bottom and going out the back/top.
If that doesnt help, reseat the CPU with new thermal compound as ur current stuff may have gone of if ur on a old rig. When ur doign this check over the heatsink and fan, make sure nothing has broken or is damaged.
What CPU do u have exactly If its OC’d what is it running at (including Vcore)..and what CPU cooler ?

My cpu is AMD Phenom II X4 970 3.5 ghz and no not OC.. i don’t trust myself to do that… This is not an old rig, everything but the case is new…from around summer of 2012… Like i said up until the last patch that i keep hearing people complain about i played this game for hours and hours WVW and Questing and never had issues… None of my other games have issues so it has to be the game not the cpu. There is no way my cpu would overheat just for one game. It makes no sense.

Oh in case you want to know, I have a Nvidia Geforce GTX 560 SE, which is more than enough to play this game on just about max settings if i wanted, though i don’t. All drivers are updated even my bios… I have Windows 8…but it was doing this on Windows 7 before i upgraded the other day too. I have speed fan program and it shows the core and fan 1 going up to almost 100c or higher, the gpu goes to 80c. I blew out the case… have 2 fans on the side of case, one on power supply, the one(s) that come on the gpu, one on the rear of the case, one on top of the case, and one on front of case… i think thats all of them. I added the 2 on the side to be sure of the overheating issue, because my last cpu was garbage so it overheated from everything.

And I’m using the stock fan that came with cpu

I didn’t even do that myself, i had a professional do that because it was my first pc build i didn’t want to mess it up lol.
And it may take more cpu then Black Ops 2, but I don’t only play Black Ops 2… I play WoW with no problems, LOL with no problems, EVERYTHING with no problems, even Starcraft 2 and diablo 3, there is no way GW2 takes more cpu then all of them, as i said before it never used to take anymore then 50% cpu hell i was able to run it and another game with no over heating issues… I will open the case and make sure its blown out properly but i wouldn’t be able to do any reseating or compound at this time, maybe tomorrow thanks for the advice.
LoL/SC2/D3 those don’t really tax the CPU much. WoW is an old game that works well older hardware.
Run Prime95 to test your CPU, pretty sure your system will overheat with it running. Thermal compound will degrade over time. Running at high temps will accelerate the deterioration. You just need to re-apply it.

So i just did a more thorough check of my pc and the cpu fan was caked in dust, i used almost my whole can to clean out the entire desktop…going to try gw2 now, if this doesn’t work then i will look into reapplying the thermal compound.

Correct me if im wrong here Kirito ..but ..AMD cpu’s such as the OP’s shouldnt even get to 100c ..it should shut down waaaay b4 then, iirc the CPU in question has a heat threshold of about 62c or there abouts.
OP ..are u sure ur software is reading temperature correctly ?

Well all temps are staying around 64c thats ok right?

Not really. Your above the AMD stock max temperature.
You should be around 40-50c, maybe 50-60 at max load at a push, and alot lower than that at idle.

Its speedfan, far as i know its never steered me wrong. It has these for temps…
GPU: 69c
Temp1: 64c
Temp2: -128c (dont think this one is in use at all)
Temp3: 35c
HD1: 27c
Core: 69c
Not sure which fan is which except the GPU…but the 3 that are hot are GPU Temp1 and Core but no where near what they were.

Its not at idle…its while playing GW2

GPU temps are fine up to about 90c so i wouldnt worry about that.
Your CPU though at 100% load shouldnt go past the 62c mark. Most run around 55-60c from what iv found out.
Install HWMonitor ..or Coretemp ..and see if that gives different temps for ur CPU.

I put together my first pc the fall of 2012. Turns out it has a very low tolerance for dust. I need to clean out the cpu cooling fins once a month and after I do gw2 works great again. Not like my old pc which could be caked with dust and keep going.
Pro tip for dusty environment. Use pantyhose or leg stocking over the system intake fan. Cheap solution.

Just use the in game frame limiter and you should be fine. Solar Nova is spouting misleading information, don’t listen to him, software can cause hardware to overheat if it is not properly restrained.
Software cant cause a overheat.
Yes it can. There has to be a lot of workload for that to happen though. Like, stupidly high workloads. Inconceivable amounts.

It’s most likely that your heat sink is starting to loosen and GW2 is pretty demanding on the CPU so it causes it to heat up more quickly than you other programs/games.
I’ve only ever had it happen once and I was so surprised when that turned out to be it. Just open the case and wiggle it around, if it’s loose just tighten it down and fixed. Feel free to dust as well, that could be the culprit too.

Blarg! This is a 6 month old necro! Oh well, the advice still stands.

I’ll put it bluntly – those of you saying that software can cause your CPU to overheat are wrong!
The ONLY way your CPU will ever overheat is if you have a cooling system problem (dust, etc.).
If your PC can’t run all CPU cores at 100% for hours at a time without overheating – it’s a hardware issue.

Indeed. As i said back in Jan on this thread, software cant ‘cause’ it.
It can show up an existing hardware issue, but it(software) wont be the route cause. The route cause will be hardware related.
TBH imo its common sense logic. Though that may just be a biased view as i already have the knowledge.
But I cant see any sense in coming to the conclusion that software can somehow cause a piece of hardware, designed to run akittens max load, to suddenly start overheating whilst having adequate cooling.
The ONLY software that can influence heat on a CPU or GPU is software that controls fan speeds and voltages. GW2 is neither.
Therefor its hardware related.

As the last few posts have said, software can’t overheat hardware…
Maybe people are thinking that Guild Wars 2 is overclocking their hardware which then turns it into a software problem. However, that is not the case and when overclocking the user takes full responsibility for knowing the consequences of running hardware are higher than rated performance.

Without knowing what program hes using and what it has TjMax set at, his readings could be wrong. Temps are high, as stock it should stay around 60C full load, willing to bet it was seated poor or has bad TIM contact and the dust build up showed a problem that was already there.

In a system that is working as it should, no software will overheat the CPU, even running programs like IBT, the stock cooler will keep it under TjMax, if it does not, there is a problem or the system is running in a very hot environment.
