I have had multiple windows 7 crashes since I started playing GW2. I have changed my system to x79 in raid0. I have had the same hard drives for 2 years with 0 problems. But the same time I installed GW2 I updated my hardware. Sometimes when windows starts a disk check and will find errors. The messages are fast but I notice files asociated with GW2. Im going to install GW2 on /c drive instead of program files and see if this helps. If anyone else has had the same types of issues please let me know. All hardware has been benchmarked and stress tested and is ok.

asus x79sabertooth
corsair platinum 2133 16gb
3930k cpu
evga 690×2 quad sli
windows 7 ultimate x64
corsair 80gb force ssd x2 raid0

User mode software cannot cause a system crash (unless its compiled with an unsafe compiler using very badly written ASM)

Go back to the basics and check everything starting with the bios configuration(Voltages and dram timings), Drivers(Sata, Video, Sound and Ethernet/Wlan)

have you run any actual hdd checks? it could be that the number of writes has been reached on those drives 2 years is a long time so it’s certainly possible with the older gen sold state drives.

I flash the drives at least every 6 months using parted magic. could this still be a problem?

The memory is in x.m.p. mode, and I have run benchmarks and stress tests on the system with no failure, any other ways to check?

flashing them is essentially another huge number of writes to the blocks that they would otherwise not have had.

it’s the funny thing with solid state drives, over time the life expectancy will drop off quite alot, indexing and hibernate files should be disabled as should pagefile as they are all random writes to the drive it really doesn’t need and they all over time reduce the life span.

pagefile isn’t needed and if you have it enabled disable it, sounds harsh but increase your ram if your worried but 16gb of ram is more than enough to disable it on any system.

to disable the hibernation as it rewrites that every time you make a change, elevated command prompt, type- powercfg -h off

given your faults and the occuring errors when you run a disk check my feeling is going towards the drives reaching end of life.

current gen ssd’s can take a considerably larger number of writes before failure and the controllers have been improved a great deal as well.

pagefile should not be disabled, its place is best on an SSD and there are far less random writes to a pagefile then there are to the system profile data (ntuser.dat, and system hives).

you might need abit more juice on the VCCIO with ram clockrates over 1600.

According to corsair using a secure erase with parted magic will make the drive perform as normal. Is this incorrect?

the last time I had this issue was trying to log off of GW2. the screen froze and could not access anything. as a last resort I decided to hard reset, thats when I saw the errors from GW2 on windows check for consistency. then the desktop became unresponsive and I re-installed windows.

Best to check the drive’s health (if Corsair has a tool run it) or check it with something like SSD-life, and run a full CHKDISK on the suspect drive AND also on your system drive (will require boot time scan).

With CHKDisk Hang around and watch the scan progress to see if it finds and/or corrects anything and let it do a ‘surface’ scan, despite there not being physical sectors the system still assigns the SSD inodes to virtual sectors as this is how filesystems are designed to function. These may have been reassigned wrong by the drive (through its internal wear leveling) or a reassignment may have been ‘lost’ by doing the secure erase as this clears even the diagnostic data on the drive.

ouch, that might very well be your problem.

those old sandforce controllers can corrupt data at random for some reason

I had a rampage 3 extreme in raid 0 for 2.5 years no problem, but it does seem I am going to update to a new corsair 250gb ssd, and just run it ahci, and making the ssd hotswap to install windows 7 on it. IU always ran everything off the raid, never used 2 seperate hdd

I did 2 things one of wich made a diffrence. first i installed GW2 directly on the c drive rather than program files. And 2 I did not install Intels rst controller. I did read that it was causing issues with ssds on x79 platforms. My guess would be the irst controller was causing the problem , but Im not 100% sure.

you lose TRIM support (the thing that improve performance of ssd)

not with IRSTe 3.2 and higher

probably one of the ssd failing becouse of no TRIM support

no TRIM = performance decreased it ssd

My drives are working up to par, atto shows no decrease in file transfer, but I could not sleep and so I turned my computer on this morning, and once again there was a consistency check where there were some errors found. also a bunch of orphaned files were found. I was able to see that arenanet were associated with some of the files. why would this be?

I just started GW2 up and it had to repair files for GW2. The last time this happened I had just done SE dungeon. last night I also did a SE dungeon run, I dont know if or why this would even cause a problem but it was the last thing I did in both instances.

If Im not mistaken the samsung 840 is the better model, just beating the corsair nuetron gtx by minimal marks. although I havent been able to find a 840 and corsair is known for their reliablity and awsome customer support

Sorry, but how were you able to do this? Checkdsk won’t see any individual files inside the GW2 dat file, and orphaned files are displayed via index location rather than distinct file names.

Btw, that repair and chkdsk both cement it in my mind that the SSD is developing problems.

I agree with this their not the fastest but the most problem free. I have a 64 and 256gb and their the only SSD’s I recomend.

on the check disk it displays the files that are currupt or being orphaned. ALthough it is verry fast there is a few seconds where you can view some of the files before they said in the sentence guild wars 2 and last night i noticed it said arena net then when I tried to run the game it needed to repair itself. I personally dont care if you believe me I am just stating fact.

hmmm, would have to be temp files, the game reads the giant dat file directly like doom and its pak files so there wouldn’t be any way for chkdsk to orphan any of the files inside it.

Idk why but issue only happens when I enter sorrows embrace play through and shut down, then when I start up windows does its own chkdsk and thats where the errors, orphaned files are shown. Sorry if I was sounding condescending but I am not making it up I just dont understand why this would happen.

Have you replaced the SSD yet?

the OCZ ssd using the same sandforce chip as your F80A also developers random corruption after a few years.

no I didnt replace it yet I dont think its a drive issue. Ive atto it and its performance is fine, although maybe with newer technology the drives arent performing like they did with my x58 mb. Idk, but I will make that decision in due time. so far I had one crash it seems from entering SE for some reason. But I will have to look into it further. ty for the help
