Game Doesnt Start
Hi ZarraK – Sorry to hear about these issues you’ve been having with the client. I’d like to take a closer look to try to figure out why you might be experiencing this problem. There is an application called “Game Advisor” which will generate a report that provides a bit of system information that may make it a bit easier for us to look into this issue. You can download Game Advisor below:
http://us.ncsoft.com/gameadvisor/
Please note that you will be automatically prompted to install Game Advisor upon clicking the link. Once you’ve generated the report, you can attach it to this thread by clicking “More posting & formatting options…”
Hi Arenanet folks,
I am having the same problem as this chap. This all started after I downloaded the latest big update on Friday. I press Play after Login and the game freezes, and becomes a bit white unresponsive box, that only a Ctrl, Alt Delete will close. It does not come up with any error messages.
Here is my game advisor report.

Try this…i worked for me at least.
Go to my documents, gw2 folder then there delete Local.dat file. After this go to your gw2 folder and delete gw2.tmp and gw2.exe.Download the client from your account put it in your gw2 folder and rename it to gw2.exe.After this it should download just the lastest files (about 10mb i think) and try to run the game.I hope it works.Btw try at least 2-3 times if not cause in my case didn’t work first time as well.
Cufta thanks for the suggestion but it didn’t work for me, and I tried it three times.
Hi V Man – If you’re still experiencing this problem, I’d recommend first trying Msconfig to eliminate background applications interfering with the game client.
im having the same issue with the launcher, sometimes it works, but i have to sit there restarting it up to 15 times before it will let me play. most of the time i give up and dont bother playing.

Hi
I’ve had the same problem since I installed the latest patch: I’m able to log in fine to GW2 but the second I press “play” the game freezes and there’s a black screen in the background.
I’ve checked my firewall but everything seems fine, I’ve done a repair without results. Finally I had enough and reinstalled the game. At first it wouldn’t do that either but then I got the message that the game was blocked by the firewall and asked me if I wanted to bypass it. Knowing that it seemed like it was the firewall after all, but I had already uninstalled the files and had to reinstall. When the installation was complete the game started without problem. Then I turned it off and now the same problem is back. I still can’t start the game. And I can’t see any problem with the firewall.

V Man -
I see that you have Spybot S&D running in the background. Last time I used that it was really buggy and caused some weird issues. I recommend uninstalling it (at least as a test). After that, you should do a clean boot and try the game again:

I recommend the same for you (clean boot). I see one program that may be interfering with GW2 called “StartManSvc.exe”. I recommend that you remove it. More info here:
my game does not start and tells me there is a serious error, iv sent reports, iv reinstalled the game, and tried to log in with another computer and it worked, so i dont think its an account problem

Also, start with a clean boot. But first you have what appears to be a virus (or some type of malware) running.
It’s called “BrowserProtect.exe”. I recommend that you remove it. Here’s a guide to do that:
abomally –
The game started spontaniously yesterday, before I could make any changes, but today its the same problem again.
I did a cleen boot, but with no effect.
I belive I’ve removed StartManSvc.exe though I cant be compleatly sure since I could not find the actual file, but think I was able to remove the software that it belongs to. But my problem is still unchanged
Here is my newes report:

Thanks for the responses. I still have this issue.
Abomally I took your advice and removed Spybot, and did a clean boot. Still exactly the same problem. I took another game advisor report while running on a clean boot (attached). If there is any other thing you want me to try then let me know.

Something isn’t right with the clean boot.
The following programs are still running at startup and they shouldn’t be with a clean boot:
armsvc.exe
AppleMobileDeviceService.exe
mDNSResponder.exe
ESSVR.EXE
stij.exe <——- looks suspicious
PassThruSvr.exe
PnkBstrA.exe
RichVideo.exe
c2c_service.exe
ExtensionUpdaterService.exe
Personal.exe
Skype.exe
chrome.exe
GamerOSD.exe
jusched.exe
Also, I just noticed that you are running two antivirus programs at the same time. This is problematic because they both tend to fight each other. You should choose one and uninstall the other one (personally I prefer Avast because it causes no issues at all with gaming and is light on resources).
This time when you uncheck the boxes in MSCONFIG, don’t forget to hit ‘Apply’ and reboot.
Edited to add that GamerOSD.exe is known to cause issues with GW2. Make sure to disable or uninstall it.

Is that the “clean boot” log? If so, there is still quite a bit running.
The reason I usually have people try with a clean boot is that software conflicts can happen fairly often with games. Unfortunately, I don’t really have time to test running GW2 with all the various programs running; so I don’t know which programs cause issues or not.
I do know that GW2 is OK with running Firefox, Avast and Fraps at the same time. I keep my system running as “clean” as possible by turning off all unneeded start up programs (and services).
This is generally a good idea – for me especially because I have a very old gaming machine and need to squeeze every bit of performance out of it that I can.
The last log I posted was with all Non-microsoft processes off (like it said on the tutorial you posted). Nothing else has changed but gw2, so I’m sure it’s not something new on my end.
Sorry guys -
I should be more careful with the clean boot links I provide. In MSCONFIG, you should leave the ‘services’ tab alone. It’s better to change those in the services snap-in (which we don’t need to worry about at this point).
What we really want to do is disable start up programs. The procedure is the same, except that you click the ‘Startup’ tab instead of the ‘Services’ tab.
We want to uncheck all non-essential programs (leaving antivirus and HD sound programs enabled should be OK). After un-checking the boxes, click apply and then reboot. Try the game again.
Here are my msconfig settings:

Ok thanks for the clarification.
I’ve tried it again doing a proper clean boot this time and still the same problem.

Update: I still cannot access the game. That’s 2 weeks now. One strange occurrence – I downloaded the latest update last night, and after it downloaded the game booted correctly first time. I thought the problem was fixed, closed the game and went to bed. Today I try it and it’s back to how it was before, unresponsive.
At least you guys can start the game, my launcher crashed as soon as the text “Checking for updates” appears, and it’s been like this since the patch, however anytime before that I’ve been able to play GW2 perfectly fine, I’ve heard this latest patch has quite a few issues related to it, kind of sucks too, since I personally love playing GW2
Any word on this Arenanet?
Starting to feel like I’ve been converted to free trial
Also I Really wanted that tentacle backpack… guess I’ll be missing that?
