My computer used to crash every once in a while, but ever since today, I can’t play more than five minutes without it crashing. Sometimes it gives me the error log, and sometimes it just closes the program and the message comes up that says “an error has caused the program to close.” I’ve attached the crash text – this was always the same text from when it crashed before, but now it’s just so often.

These crashes are quite common on 32 bit windows systems. And somehow (this isn’t exactly confirmed, more my speculation so I could be completely wrong) there are more of these crashes associated with peeps using the same vid card.

Some options to try:

1) Make sure you have the latest vid card drivers installed. A clean install is preferred.

2) Close out any extraneous programs running and try to save some memory for gw2. One quick way to do this is with msconfig. Run msconfig, disable all startup programs, restart comp, test gw2. You can re-enable by repeating the steps.

Gw2 is using a little more memory this patch it seems. 32bit windows only recognizes up to roughly ~3.5gb of ram and a portion of that is used by the OS already, any extra stuff running is just chewing it up and not leaving enough for GW2s massive usage. Mine is using over 2gb now, last night, roughly 1.85gb (I’m on Mac and we need more memory due to our client). But if I’m getting this, I can only imagine what a 32bit system is doing.

Crashing every 10 minutes now. Not exactly 10 minutes, but more like everytime a tons of Skill Spam all goes off at once from lots of other people nearby

Windows XP pro… (yes 32bit). It didn’t crash like this BEFORE THE PATCH.

Wait, the 32 bit system only recognizes that little amount of ram? Then why the heck do we have 32GB of ram installed in this desktop computer? Does it not even matter?

Sorry I am not as knowledgeable on these things, my husband built the computer. I just play GW2 on it.

32 Bit will actually crash somewhere around 1,250,000K allocated to GW2 sometimes … (I’m runnig with TaskMon proc values in my other monitor).

And now I’m seeing it spiking into the 1.3gb and 1.4gb Range after only just loading it 5 minutes ago. IT NEVER DID THIS BEFORE. This is either a massive MEM leak, or they added a ton of BS to the kernal that now makes it completely incompatible with 32bit OS’s. Most zones are now taking Twice as long to load as they used to, yet I’m not SEEING any new resources in-game around me yet.

On my system it always used to hover around 900,000 KB… now it’s going WAY over that. …for no apparent reason BTW. Would like to see an official response from Anet about this. It’s the main reason I quit Planetside also.

I really hope this is just an issue that became much worse because of the patch today. From what other people are saying, a lot of new problems arrived after this new Queen event. I did what the first responder suggested and disabled the majority of the startup programs, and there aren’t any other programs running when I try to play GW2. Funny enough, I started a new level 1 character for fun and didn’t have the crash issue while I played for about 15 minutes. Hmmm.

Hi Nami, that is correct, you need a 64 bit windows to actually use that 32gb, if you look at your crash log, it shows this:

Physical: 820mb/3548mb

That is roughly 3.5 gb. So if you guys get a 64bit windows, that should remedy this problem for the most part… Unless there are other, unknown issues.

As I mentioned, the game seems to be using significantly more memory, but after running it for roughly 8 hours (play and idle), I never exceeded 2.25 gb of usage. I don’t think there is a memory leak, but it does seem like a new “optimisation” that they are trying out. Unfortunately, this renders a 32 bit OS obsolete at this point. But in this day and age, 3.5 gb of ram is fairly lacking anyway.

Unfortunately, I don’t really have suggestions other than the 2 bits above and try lowering your graphics settings WAY down, maybe even dip the resolution also.

Please post back if you have any further questions or if you have any improvements with any of the 3 suggestions I’ve left.

Same issue with me. Out of memory errors and crashes. Worst thing is that my main chr is on Divinity Reach, and I can’t even complete loading that map before it crashes. This patch consumes way too much memory. I have the latest drivers installed, can’t figure what to do more

This game was touted as being fully functional on mid-range machines, and as far as I know, no devs have stated that things have changed. My machine is about 2yrs old and was functioning near perfectly (rare GW2 crashes, perhaps once a month if that) even after many hour sessions until immediately after the patch. Whatever they’ve done, may indeed not be an issue for those with better machines, but there are a lot of people playing on older hardware/OS’s that are being severely affected.

Since it wasn’t my machine that changed, but the code, there’s little to do but wait on ANet’s coders to suss out the issue and hope it’ll leave us lower caste types enough time to enjoy the majority of the new content.

For me, I’ll have a new machine up and running within the month, but I can easily sympathize with those that aren’t going to be so lucky if these new/resurrected issues drag on.

Having the same troubles and also running a 32 bit OS. Before the patch I could run the game at between 32 and 45 Fps on max settings. Now it crash’s after 5 mins of playing if that. Only way I can get it to run for any length of time is to drop all the settings to their lowest. Even the resolution. I AM NOT HAPPY. What have they done.

Same, I can’t even open the game at this point. Oddly it seems that something has been accumulating to cause crashing on entry into the server. I’ll include a dxdiag and anet log.

Same here, before the update I had crashes after changing maps 5 or 6 times or after a long session of several hours.
Now it happens after changing maps 1 or 2 times, and it also crashes while in Lions Arch for abouth 10 min (without ever changing the map).

I don’t know what this update did, but it changed the out of memory bug from a minor annoyance to almost unplayable.

I too am using a 32 bit OS, with a Nvidia Geforce GTX 260 graphics card.

Spalliero, it seems you have 8gb installed, but because of your 32bit OS, you’re only getting about 3.5gb to use.

With any luck, this tweak may get fixed, but who knows if this was actually intended, but this could be gw2 still finding its niche.

If they’re going to greatly increase the Total Ram required to play only 1 year after release (I think Minecraft did this too maybe?) …then they have to change their Official REQUIREMENTS and offer all of us who bought it some kind of compensation here.

What I think is happening… that they took the Lazy route here of splitting up Low and High resolution Resources by having your Client load BOTH SETS AT THE SAME TIME for “real time” optimization scaling and to avoid hitching & pre-fetching while transitioning from one set of Texture/Models to the other in a big Fight.

That’s understandable… for 64bit users. But they should have included some means of keeping all Particle/Model resources consistent for the rest of us who don’t have more than 2gb to actually dedicate wholly to any 1 program. I have 4gigs on SP3 for example which means I get what… ~600mb of physical for OS and another 1.5 for GW2 (after my Video Card resources hogs the other free Gig of Motherboard ram for no godkittened reason at all…. screw Bill Gates and the insane Steve Ballmer he rode in on)

Today the game seems to run smoother. Don’t know if its a change made by the devs, or my settings (most to medium or low), or both. Anyway, I could play again. I concur with the remarks about system requirements. When a game is sold with a list of minimun system requirements, no matter how many times its patched, changes should never exceed those requirements. Not in 1 year, not in 2 years, 5 years, never… The team working on new content should really be more careful with this.

Those of you on 32 bit operating systems can try adding the 3 gig memory switch. I don’t know if this works on Windows 7, but it will on XP and Vista. I have no way of knowing if this will solve your GW2 ‘out of memory’ issues, but it [theoretically] will.:

http://www.vfxpedia.com/index.php?title=FAQ/3GB_Switch

Edit: Ignore the stuff about “DFX+/Fusion cache limit” it has nothing to do with GW2.

Well it seems like they did a few more updates. The performance issues haven’t really improved for me sadly. I did lower all the graphics levels as low as they could. (So sad, I was able to keep them pretty high before ) The crashes mostly happen if I have to load into a big city or an area where there are multiple players. Even when not in those areas, some NPC’s and players don’t completely load, they just look like green and blue blobs. And also pressing M to bring up the map is a big no-no. That is the most often thing that makes it crash.

We’ve been looking into upgrading to a 64 bit system, but that probably won’t be possible for a long time since it is not cheap.

I don’t get it. A week ago these crashes were hardly ever happening. I was fine with playing with the occasional crash. Why did they change it and increase the amount of memory needed by so much? You’d think that would make a LOT of people angry and make them unable to play the game?

I’ve gotten used to closing and reopening the client everytime I transition to a new area, which has allowed me to play open world content for 1-2hrs before I crash out. I’m doing the same anytime I see those lovely blue and green diamonds instead of the TP page I should see.

However, when I try to go into the Crown Pavilion, I can interact with the merchant and such, but if I try to actually go into any of the wedges to fight, I crash almost immediately. I just tried lowering my settings to absolute minimum, which netted me 9-10FPS, but it still crashed right as I got into things. Strangely, on the first day I managed to wade into the Centaur wedge with a zerg and fight for quite a while (until they abandoned me to my doom !shakes fist!), but ever since…not a chance.

I can understand issues with the Crown Pav. due to the sheer bulk of textures and other such things that weigh on older GPUs/OSs, but crashes in the open world? No, those must be ironed out or the game becomes almost unplayable—or at the least frustrating—for many people.

Despite this, I have confidence they’ll have things together eventually, just hopefully well before this event is history.

Same thing. 32bit, Win7, Nvidia card. Graphics set to low across the board.

Crashing after roughly 10-15 minutes of playing, almost always preceded by the blue/green graphical errors on player models. Before this patch, this would usually happen after 3-4 hours of playing but now the game is near unplayable.

I am having the “out of memory” crashes for several months! I tried almost everything, re-installing both game and my OS /Windows 7 Ultimate/, have the latest drivers for my video card /GeForce GT 220/ and still every 30-40 minutes my game crashes, and when I am in a city the crashes are even more frequent, same happens when I use 3 or more teleports. Tried lowering the graphics of the game, but there wasn’t any difference. Just hope it can be fixed…somehow.

Taiance, you’re actually experiencing a different issue than most of the others on this thread, have you tried running the client with a repair? It’s similar to running the diagnostic you ran, but instead of -diag, use -repair.

Yours looks like a RAM problem. The crashes always happen at different memory addresses, which indicates that your memory is unstable or you may have a bad stick.

After 1 year of crashes I finally don’t have the “out of memory” problem anymore.
For me the answer was this 3GB Switch that abomally.2694 recommended
Guild Wars 2 is now able to use all of my Memory that is available.
I also added some more virtual memory and even after hours in the crown pavillion or on the eternal battleground the client still has no graphic glitches or random crashes. (Also try to cap your fps and turn down settings)

Its almost like a new game for me now
see you ingame

For some of us… the 3gb switch makes Windows itself unstable.

I think I’ve heard experts on the topic refer to it as an AMD hardware Conflict.
…which is fine for you pure Intel guys I guess. But it doesn’t change the fact that these are still the “System Requirements” this game:
https://en.support.guildwars2.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1119/kw/system%20requirements

Many of us have Double those requirements, yet can’t even play anymore b/c of bad Memory Optimization that only gives regard to Win8 & Windows7 64bit users.

Kyllaa, if you refer to /3GB switch then no, I did not try it and have no intention to do it. I run a lot of different apps on this machine and have no in tension to make this kind of changes just to allow one game to work properly. If this is memory management problem it should be fixed. Considering that it is rather new problem it should be rather easy to debug.

Then there likely is no helping you, but until Anet establishes “recommended” system requirements, you most likely will be facing more crashes in the future. Considering right now, many users of 32 bit windows are facing issues, it’s worth trying a work around until whatever has changed gets remedied (maybe) or they establish a list of recommended specs.

This game isn’t even 1 yet, these things are still being worked on for the multitude of different systems out there. Other games weren’t without their bugs in the first year or 3.

Without the whole log, it’s difficult to predict what is going on, but if that is not an “out of memory” error, then your problem isn’t the same as the others on the thread and should really be a new topic all together and will most likely require different fixes. But again, without the whole log, it’s tough to say.

My client seems stable now. Whatever they did in todays patch seems to have stopped my O.o.M. crashes (Out of Memory). I’m currently running multiple sessions of Chrome, FireFox, and have Photoshop open with a HUGE file in it with GW2 on top of GW hasn’t crashed yet.

Lowering Quality/Setting and making them as consistent as possible also may have helped too.
