Hey guys,

I’m loving guild wars 2, but with my current rig I only max out at about 19fps which has a AMD quad core 2.2GHz processor with a 9600gt nvidia card which is bothering me as I really enjoy the game itself.

So I have finally decided to invest in a new gaming rig.
I’m setting the budget at about £900 for the tower, and the reason I’m here is because I would like to know if anybody feels this would be a good enough spec to run the game on high settings and also enjoy the WvW as I am very into the pvp aspect on guild wars 2 but at the moment I cant run more than 3fps when huge battles start flaring up.

Here is the new rig I am planning on getting.

Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Processor i7-3770K (3.5GHz) 8MB Cache

Motherboard
ASUS® P8Z77-M: MICRO-ATX, USB 3.0, SATA 6GBs, ATI®CrossFireX

Memory (RAM)
8GB SAMSUNG DUAL-DDR3 1333MHz (2 X 4GB)

Graphics Card
2GB AMD RADEON™ HD7870 – DVI,HDMI,2 mDP – DX® 11, Eyefinity 4 Capable

Operating SystemGenuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit w/SP1 – inc DVD & Licence

If anybody could tell me if they think this rig would be ideal or if anybody knows any current optimization problems with anything here it would be greatly appreciated before i bite the bullet and place my order!

Thanks

Hi kinda in the same boat myself building a new rig for GW2, personally i think you d be better off with an i5 3570k if you decide your going to overclock, the board is ideal for that ofc very nice. GPU should max easily at 1080p dunno how many monitors your going for though. After much thought i decided against the overclocking route,so will choose the i5 3450 with Asus P8B75-V motherboard ,8Gb crucial ballistix ram with my HD6970 2Gb. Currently playing on E8500 3.16ghz with that card and its playing 15-25 crowded areas, cities etc but out questing PVE i;ve hit 120 fps with that card so very impressed though its norm 60-70 . So your card with that system will blast the game. Hope thats helped, btw i had that card and its not bad at all but replaced with the 6970 week before GW2 came out so never got to use it ingame. Good luck with your build !

This system should more than suffice. There are a few apparent performance issues with GW2 right now that may cause some less than optimal performance out of the gate though, so hopefully they resolve them by the time you get this system built.

its a nice system, but personally I would choose different memory – you can get 1600MHz or 1866MHz DDR3 and this would help make a difference to your overall system performance.

theres no point putting loads of money into your new CPU if your not going to provide it with a healthy amount of bandwidth by buying the cheapest memory.

also remember its still early in the game and there is still tons of optimising to be done, you may find that your current pc is fine or needs just a new graphics card in the near future. the choice is your, I just think there are a lot of people diving in and buying new hardware when they haven’t even giving the game time to mature.

Your system should be more than sufficient, but I would probably make a couple of changes.

CPU:
I went with the i5 3570K (3.4Ghz) – Everything I’ve seen points to this actually being a better processor for gaming

Mobo:
Is there a reason for going Micro ATX? I swear by asus myself, but I also understand that ASRock is supposed to be very good and they have a couple of boards at ATX size for similar price point. (I went with an ASUS Sabertooth Z77 myself)

RAM
8GB is good, but I’d bump to 1600MHz RAM. It’s price point is fairly similar and most times you can find good stuff on sale for about $40 for 8GB.

Graphics looks good too, I run a 5770 and with my cpu etc upgrade I achieve 60-70fps at mid-high settings at 1920×1080. so the 7870 should be able to handle high pretty good.

I don’t now what country everyone here is from…but here in the US we have a well known TV company that a lot of people like to talk crap about because they aren’t as big as Samsung, Toshiba, and so on. From what I know ASRock is kind of like a Vizio TV set… if you dont know a lot about them you hate them, but once you own one you’re like OH MY GOD THIS IS AMAZING!!!!! lol

As others have said I would go for at least 1600 or 1866 memory as chances are the price isn’t that different anyway.

Also unless you are going to be doing anything which supports HT (ex. video encoding) the i7 will give no benefit over the i5 for gaming. You would be better off getting the i5 and putting the spare cash towards a good aftermarket heatsink for OC.

Why only 1333 Mhz for RAM?

RAM frequency has very little effect on performance, after 1600MHz there’s no point going any further because RAM with higher frequencies tends to fail earlier than the normal 1333, and 1600, the only place where 2133Mhz comes into handy is benchmarks, plus it can potentially strain the CPU (higher CPU temps). The graphics card and CPU are the main things to consider, as in you pay more, you get more, I’m currently under-clocking my GTX 580 @ 405MHz GPU clock and 1250MHz Memory clock, and what I’ve found out is that if I go any lower than 1250MHz with my GTX 580 is that frame rates suffer terribly, the GPU clock doesn’t really affect FPS, however memory clocks are very important in Graphics cards, the faster the clock, the more frames can be processed in a second.

<1250MHz = <30 FPS
1250MHz = ~60 FPS
>1250MHz = >60 FPS

The one and only, the Legend is Here, it’s…Desolutional!

If you are going to use it for primarily just gaming I would def go with the i5 people have suggested in this thread. I have one and overclocked it to 4.2 and it runs amazingly.

I would also listen to suggestions on the ram

THe 7870 is a great gaming card. You should be able to play the game on almost max with very playable frame rates.
