Ello there!

So I noticed Guild Wars 2 makes a folder inside my “My Documents”. Is there anyway to move where its making this folder? This seems to be the umpteenth game that just makes random folders in “My Documents”.

doubt you can relocate it withotu problems but honestly theres no real reason to move it, its not that large, and it holds you account files/settings, as well as log files if you have a problem. also, its very common for games to make folders in my doc’s, some use my games but many use my docs, again this is very common, one tip i can give, if you reinstall windows, before hand backup those files and restore them on the new windows install, you saved games and settings will already be set no need to do it again

The folder he is talking about houses the .dat file, which for me is 25GB+. If I relocate the file and folder and everything in it, and try to run the game, the folder is recreated and the 25-gig .dat file starts redownloading. it’s annoying, i agree. I wanted to be able to put GW on a gaming-specific solid-state drive, different from the one where my operating system is (for performance, convenience, and stability) but don’t find a way to do so. Guild wars saves online, the only things that are written into the local machine are save e-mail and password (if any), in-game preferences (sound, graphics), and screenshots. The rest all seems to be system files that are not unique to the account.

The gw2.dat file is 15.8gigs and is installed wherever GW2 is installed. Local.dat is stored in my documents and it’s 33.6 MB and re-creates itself if deleted.

The documents folder also holds any ‘corrupt..dat’ files found using the -repair option, an empty music folder and a couple possible text files.

GW2 is it’s own directory. I installed in the folder C:\GW2 and then copied that folder to D and an external 1 TB, all run independently and update independently. If launching from a shortcut, the shortcut has to point to the proper drive and location or it will start re-downloading (I have to use the /clientport 80 switch for example).

So YES, you can move the entire install to a SSD, local.dat will remain in my documents but that’s fine as Jazhara said, no reason to move it.

edit: Well well well, there are two local.dat files, one in the install dir and one in my docs, both different sizes. But still, it doesn’t matter.

Hi,
you could use a directory junction like mklink /j link target .
In my case target is the same folder where Gw2.exe is located so that I can even have the screenshots in the same folder.
