Only Better…

So, this is my problem, and it’s very small, and it’s not really seen too often, maybe once or twice within I would have to say, an 8 hour span of playing Guild Wars 2.
The issue here is that just at the most random of all times, Guild Wars 2 will decide to “Freeze” on me. Now, it would be fine and dandy if it was just that, however, afterwards, I’m not able to alt tab, nor even get any use of my computer, forcing me to click the restart button on my desktop.
The weird thing is, I’ve only been having this issue, during the last Beta Phase, and upon launch.
My graphics cards are (or were) top of the line running on dual 7970’s, so, I hardly doubt it has anything to do with the graphics department. I have 16GB of RAM, so that definitely can’t be the problem, because let’s face it, no one is rarely going to ever use 16GB of RAM during playing games.
I haven’t noticed anything in the background running, or anything that could actually cause the game to just randomly freeze my entire computer, except one little issue I’ve noticed in AMD Catalyst Control Center. And that would be that the game is almost taking up 99% activity at all times. I find it odd that any game really would take up that much use. After monitoring it for a while, I’ve noticed the temp never reaches 60 degree’s, and always stays around 50-55 degree’s, but this is just like in the some of the ‘Bigger" games I’ve played that it’ll ever get that high. Running at 99% does have me a bit curious though.
If anyone could shed some light on this issue, it would be appreciated. Otherwise, I guess I’m simply going to have to live with restarting my computer every so often, which I’m almost positive isn’t good for it.

I have been freezing today as well. It has been happening usually when I have the UI open and I’m clicking on something. Better than the crashing I had from yesterday, but still annoying!
The game is still running for me when it freezes as the sounds are still playing, but the screen is locked up. If I Ctrl + Alt + Delete I can log off/log back onto Windows, which is smoother than a hard boot if that makes your life any easier. Task Manager stays hidden though if I try to use that, so nothing I can do but log off.
Well, at least you’re luckier then me, I wish I could Ctrl Alt Delete and get to a task manager.
You could try to down clock the GPU Memory a little to see if this helps.
Or you could go to the Event-Viewer of Windows, and look
for an error which could have something to do with your problem.
If you don’t know how:
go to: Control Panel \ Administrative Tools \ Event-Viewer.
There on the left side expand “custom views” and click on Administrative Events, now you should see the latest Errors.
My guess would be something like: “Level: Warning – Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding” or something like that.
Well I just skimmed through your post so this maybe completely wront, however I was having freezing problems with my computer less then a week ago where programs would freeze and then I couldnt ctrl alt delete them.
I had to update my ssd’s firmware and after that my computer hasnt froze since.
Worth a look if you have an ssd I suppose.
I’m having the same problem. No overheating, my PSU is fine, and my machine runs all other games flawlessly. There is something up with GW2 and certain cards it seems.

Ah, that is always helpful to know, useful to know what happened just before the crash. Anyways, I think I’ve found the problem out. Every time the crash occurs, it says;
Session “Microsoft Security Client OOBE” stopped due to the following error: 0xC000000D
And then right afterwards, I see another message right before the crash which says:
The previous system shutdown at 12:16:02 AM on ?9/?10/?2012 was unexpected.
As you can see, the crash just happened again, 30 minutes ago.
I’m using the security program, “Microsoft Essentials”, which was recommended to me by a a buddy of mine who works at EA Games. However, I do know my brother also is using the same security program that I use as well, yet, he has no issue’s whatsoever with his Guild Wars 2 game.
Do you think it could have something to do with the program?
And If you don’t mind me asking, what would you suggest clocking my GPU to?
Of course, this is only if you check back in the forums. If not, I suppose I’ll shut off my MSE, and maybe go back to using Norton.
Thanks for the help in advance, and prior to this. Helped me a lot. Learn something new everyday.
The same has been happening to me since 2 days ago. Before that it never happened.
It freezes my game and my PC, and forces me to restart the computer.
Had this exact issue, so I checked Event Viewer as suggested. “Session “Microsoft Security Client OOBE” stopped due to the following error: 0xC000000D” was the exact Error I had for both dates that my PC froze on me.
A quick Google search and I kept finding the suggestion to delete the following file/s in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Microsoft Security Essentials\Support
MSSEOOBE.etl or EppOobe.etl if you can’t find the first one, then restarting your computer. I’m trying it now, not sure if it is guaranteed to work but might as well try

Actually same here, only since Friday night. That’s with an nVidia 580 though.

There is nothing abnormal about your GPU’s running at 99% usage. That is totally normal. Any game that is properly optimised and GPU bound will make that happen.
For instance if I run my cards in SLI for this game they only run at 55%. Single GPU mode runs at 99%.
If your computer is freezing like that I suspect either your CPU is overheating or possibly your RAM is overclocked and you haven’t adjusted the voltage properly?
That’s my guess anyway.

That’s nice to know that it’s not a problem. I always get a bit nervous seeing it raise to 99%, it just doesn’t feel right, and no, as I’ve said, as as the picture shows, it only gets around 50-60 in temperature, which I’m assuming isn’t bad for AMD, since I’ve heard they’re “Supposed” to run at high temps.
I think the guy I quoted was onto something. I have noticed that before playing GW 2, my computers notifications would sometimes say “Display is not working properly”. And, I’ve just never seen it since, not while running Guild Wars 2, not ever since the first days of Tera.
But thanks for the information. Appreciate it. Any further help is still much appreciated. I tried deleting the file from MSE, and well, that didn’t work. I’m going to run the game tonight with MSE closed period, and see what becomes of it. If I get nothing, which I usually freeze once a night, I’ll keep testing this for a while, until I can confirm it actually is MSE screwing me over.
Again, more information is still appreciated. Thanks to everyone who’s responding.

yeah mine is 6000 series and it makes my pc shut off not to overheating what is up?
Hey guys i have the same problem only i get to the screen where u select the world u want to play in my whole computer freezes and i have to hit the restart button because nothing responds. if anyone could help please post something!
I just went through a painful process of checking anything humanly possible regarding this problem (which is also my problem). Not only will I get freezes that force me to reset the whole PC, I also get blue screens from time to time. So I googled the file that was noted in the bluescreen and it belongs to the ATI Catalyst Control Center (name of the file is atikmdag.sys) and more people are having trouble with freezes and BSOD. I just uninstalled the CCC and will post again after I tested how my PC behaves now. Just wanted to let you know about this potential fix since you’re using CCC as well. I hope it works.
I see there are new replys with the past few days, I too got this issue after the last few holiday downloads I am using an Nvidia card so it’s not just ATI with the issue. I am downloading newdrivers atm to hopefully help.
Hey last night i never got the game fixed, but today i turned it on to see if it would work and it decided to download the whole game over again and now i have to wait a whole nother hour for it to down load when it downloads and if it still has the same problem can anyone give me suggestions also i have a nvidia card if its relevent
i know the OP is 4 months old but just a heads up to any technical support experts here, the problem is still here, ive had it happen twice so far in AC dungeon. First time i had to hard restart, the second i used ctrl alt del and ended the task ( game went unresponsive)

The peripherals completely freeze and my computer becomes unresponsive short o0f sound, i can still here game sound, skype, etkittenil i begrudgingly restart my computer.
