Guild Wars 2

Hey guys, today I just bought the copy of gw2. But the thing is, after I finished installing there were only 2 files, gw2.exe and gw2.dat. Is the game supposed to be updating after I reach the log in part? Im only downloading like 50kb/s and it would take days to finish. In 3 hours I only downloaded 1% Any help guys? Its as if I was redownloading the whole game itself.

The files are correct.

Did you buy a hard copy? if so it needs to download all updates. If it’s a digital copy, it will have to download the whole game. About 16 gb.

I bought the hard copy. How big is the update supposed to be? Downloading the update would take days for me. I’ve downloaded 340 mb so far and it says its only 3%

The full update is somewhere around 16Gs, so if your internet is on the slow side find a friend or family member with faster internet and go over and install the game to there PC. Then with a large enough flash drive or portable hard drive copy the gw2.dat file. Take it home and copy over the gw2.dat file on your PC.

Hhmm, the loader is know for checking already installed files first but should do so at a much higher speed then when downloading (screen looks the same though).

If that’s not the case, I have no clue why it’s doing that.

That isn’t how GW2 updates work. The gw2.dat file is basically a compressed container (think zip/rar file for example). When the game is run it replaces the files in that container as needed. So there is no set size to the update, it just goes until all the files in the gw2.dat container are up to date. So you can close the updater at any point, and it will resume with whatever file it was last doing. It also patches in place, so it doesn’t have to do some long patch after everything is downloaded.

But if you have a friend who has the game, see if you can copy their gw2.dat file to a flash drive or something, it doesn’t contain any personal information or login details.

Then your dat file is out of date the game updated the GW.exe file now you need a current dat file that goes with it. It seems that lately every time there is an update or patch the exe file get updated.
