Ok I had the same problem after coming back to GW after a long absence. I tired everything on this page apart from rolling back my graphics driver. I run Win8 on a Toshiba laptop with 8g RAM, i7 2.4ghz and a NVidia GeForce 740M card with the latest drivers. Nothing worked.

I eventually right clicked on the shortcut on my desktop, selected “Run with graphics processor” and then selected “Change default graphics processor”

This then opened up the NVidia Control Panel at the “Mamage 3D Settings page” with the “Program Settings” tab selected.

In the “Select program to customize” drop down box I selected “Guild Wars 2 (gw2.exe)”.

In the “Select the preferred graphics processor for this program” drop down box I originally selected the “Integrated graphics” option. I then clicked on apply.
I was able then to log into the game and run around. I didn’t try anything else but logged out. I then did the same thing all over again but selected “High-performance NVidia processor” applied the change and once again I was able to log in and run around.

The original setting for the processor was "Use global setting (Auto select NVidia GPU) with a little GeoForce experience icon at the front. I tried this setting again and the problem reappeared and for now I can only run with the Integrated processor. I guess I should have left well enough alone but I will try some of the options above again and then reselect my NVidia card and see how I go. Still the integrated card seems fine for the little I have done since being able to get in.

I am no expert so if you can’t do what I did or have a different video card I am extremely unlikely to be able to help. I assume that most cards have the option to select the graphics processor but if yours doesn’t I feel your pain but will be of no help to you – sorry.

I hope this helps some of you out there. Oh I should say that on the right click menu for the GW2 shortcut I also selected “Run as administrator” so now the icon has a little shield type thing on it.

Hi rho is war – Unfortunately there isn’t really an “official” fix as various resolutions have come about in regards to this issue, however, the location of your local.dat file is by default Documents\Guild Wars 2. So wherever your “My Documents” folder is located, you should see a Guild Wars 2 folder within it, and there should be the local.dat file.

I have to correct you here, the local.dat is normally placed under :
C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Guild Wars 2

Appdata is a hidden folder, but you can reach appdata\roaming if you enter
%AppData% in the run field of your startmenu. Or change your explorer
settings to show hidden files and directorys.

Screenshots are still under Documents .. and i think i remember that local.dat
was there also after release, but it was changed for whatever reasons.

EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

I was having this problem myself, I was using a 32" TV for a monitor and was using a 1080p 1920×1080 resolution for my desktop, strangley enough my TV is only 1080i or 720p so I changed the resolution to 1080i and the game launched fine. So hopefully the people not having any luck with the provided solution may have some luck, experimenting with different resolutions/graphics settings

So I was getting the bug, and my TV-monitor apparently IS 1080p. By switching to 1920×1080 my issue became resolved, and I was able to log in game. Thank you for pointing out that this may be the issue.
