i have seen this issue and have had it twice on my gaming machines. now my brother is having the same issue with his machine. every single time he starts the guild wars client then hits play after login his entire machine shuts down and he has to physically shut the power supply power off then back to start the computer back up properly. this is not a store bought end user pc this is a water cooled gaming box. I have been in IT since the early 90’s and am very familiar with hardware and software and have also played guild wars since guild wars inception.

his specs:
water cooled Amd phenom II black edition
32gbs vengeance ram
two 250ssd drives not in array
1000watt black widow

P:S this is not a hardware issue it is clearly a function within the client of guild wars 2 as there are more than just a few blogs, forums, and websites dedicated to this issue.

thanks Pwnerer Ownerer

You’ll get better help in the Tech Support Section. This isnt a Gw2 specific problem or you’d see tons of people with problems.

Software should never completely shut down a PC anyway. Heat caused by running software and power draw caused by running software might.

And just because it’s water cooled doesnt mean it cant be a heat issue. Do you ever clean it? Is there air in the reservoir? What exactly are the temps? You should download Speccy or a similar program to check and make sure.

bump: ) I appreciate the comment but please post if u know for as I have done many months of research on this and it is happening to thousands and thousands of people all of the world that play this game, only takes a few minutes to see that it is guild wars specific. technical support implies tech support on an end user view point and we are not end users. we both have and still do play all of the top games that require 10x times not be exact but they do the graphics and all other hardware components than guild wars 2 does and ever will. thanks for the comment though

this is not a hardware issue when he can play other games at highest graphics for hours on end with no issues but as soon as he hits the play button on the guild wars 2 client his entire machine shutsdown, but never before then. only when he goes to play guild wars 2 does it ever shutdown we have tested it for days, reinstalled 3 different windows version and are now on windows 10 for wich I have as well and do not have the issue so its not windows. have gone through all known good configurations bought all new hardware downloaded the client again still same issue. graphics card is on the compatible list and drivers are approved for windows 10 1gb video card no cooling issues ever machine runs like a ice chest with cpu-s passed all pc-check 6.0 checks and memory burn tests. ITS NOT HARDWARE

I have noticed that many people using avg free or forms of it have been having issues successfully logging in with the guild wars 2 client and avg active firewalls, I to have experienced this and have moved to avast and I don’t have that issue anymore. so still trying to figure out how this has anything to do with hardware when its all pointing to the client why does avg have an issue with it but avast knows its not harmful?

Mines been doing it for awhile too. Just actually had it happen. However it doesn’t do it after I log in. It only seems to either reboot entirely or just give a black screen while I am on Spirit Watch in PvP.

I was reading an article about having to reinstall windows 10 from a USB when blackscreen and reboots are happening, but I am loath to do that just yet. I want to see if there is another issue.

guild wars 2 min reqed specs lmfao my phone could play this

If you believe that your phone could play it based off those minimum specs after actually playing the game, I’m not sure I believe this

I have been in IT since the early 90’s and am very familiar with hardware and software

Any how…

I have done many months of research on this and it is happening to thousands and thousands of people all of the world that play this game

I’ve been a TechSupport affiliate for over 10 years and GW2 TechSupport forum regular for over 3 years. I can assure you “Thousands” of people are not having this problem.

technical support implies tech support on an end user view point and we are not end users.

Maybe It’s poor communication but…yes,we are the “end users”.

this is not a hardware issue when he can play other games at highest graphics for hours on end with no issues

Gw2 is not other games. It behaves and interacts with hardware in unique ways,as does every game.

Keep in mind that im not trying to insult you…but

You think you know what you’re talking about but, honestly, your knowledge seems patchy at best or you would know that this…

water cooled Amd phenom II black edition

is not A processor, it’s a line of processors containing many actual, specific, processors like the AMD Phenom II 955 Black Edition, AMD Phenom II 965 Black Edition and the AMD Phenom II 1060t Black Edition.

You didn’t even mention what GPU you have.

You wouldn’t have to,really, if you had just followed my initial advice and Downloaded Speccy to get an actual thermal reading(not “its an ice box”) as Speccy has a short list of Hardware installed on your PC, like this .

graphics card is on the compatible list and drivers are approved for windows 10 1gb

Now I can tell you that in Win10 certain combinations of hardware with certain GPU Drivers won’t work with GW2. It’s been fixed by using an older version of the GPU driver.

but please post if u know

No one can know anything without you providing the information I asked for above.

Negative. I still hear sounds and it seems that the game is still running, just no screen.

I am sorry, but software shutting down your PC is not the fault of the software. This is going to be a hardware issue.

Its going to be faulty hardware, such as a failing/aged PSU or Thermal related, such as dried up TIM or a weakening CPU Fan/water Pump.

If your PC just powers off while GW2 is running (IE loses power completely) that is 99% of the time thermal protection. Meaning your CPU is over heating. 1% of the other time is a failing PSU, site fault protection trips when too many amps are drawn on the 12v rail.

You need to grab Speccy as suggested and post a screenshot of the summary window.

I would rate the chance of a failing PSU much higher.

Was totally astounded a while ago when somebody in our guild had a defect
CPU cooler and could still play GW2 .. the game was very slow because CPU
ran at minimum speed .. but the PC was not crashing or shutting down.

Personally in the last 10-12 years i had that problem 3 times because my PSU
was aged.

EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

its loaded though. OEM Machines are going to probably see a higher % of PSU failures due to their age and the lack of electrical built into them. IE, a 300watt PSU in a system that now pulls 450w with that new GPU.

And while thermal throttling will hit before fault protection (power off) if the heat jumps too high on the CPU throttling can be completely missed before the shut down. This happens quite a bit on older Phenom II and Athlon II CPUs. As they tend to run hotter then most and have a much lower TJMax limit.

So it all depends, but GENERALLY yes 99% thermal and 1% hardware failure is about right most of the time.
