So I recently purchased a new laptop (lenovo y40) as well as GW2. The first few days the game worked perfectly on medium-high settings, getting a steady 30-40 fps in most areas and hardly any stuttering.
However, recently I started encountering seemingly random stutters that eventually led to my fps dropping like a stone to 10-15 fps until I restarted the client. I did some research and so far what I’ve found is that the problem seems to stem from GPU throttling, so I started monitoring my GPU heat and speed to see. The attached graph is a plot of my GPU’s temperature and memory usage, with a green/red line to show how the game was performing at each time. 68 degrees seems a little low for the GPU to be throttling, which leads me to…

TL;DR
Is there a way to adjust the temperature at which my GPU starts to throttle? And if not, are there any other solutions or settings that can be adjusted to help?

My System (Lenovo Y40):
CPU: i7-4510U
Graphics Card: AMD m275x
RAM: 8GB
Windows 8.1

Monitor you cpu temps. Yours is an ULV cpu, and it could be reaching its thermal throttling really easy.
I’ve played for more than 2 years in a laptop and it’s not the best idea, unless is one of those bulky gaming ones.
Had to turn off Turbo Boost cause my i5 2410m easily reached 90ÂșC and it started stuttering. And a cooling base will help you a lot.

First off thanks Izaya for the link.

Forgot to mention as well that i already have a cooling pad which does help temps a bit. The thing that baffles me though is that for the first 2-3 days I played with medium to high settings for almost 3 hours straight with no problems, and only now am I starting to throttle. I’ll start monitoring the CPU and see if that may be part of the problem as well.

So i tested the CPU, and from what I’ve found it doesn’t seem to be throttling all that much.
I also looked at the GPU some more, and it seems to me that the system throttles the GPU speed by half to reduce temps when they reach ~70 degrees. The temperature does drop to around 50-55 degrees because of the throttle, but then after the temperature drops, the system never returns the GPU speed to its regular state.
I’m not sure if this is intended or not, but in my mind there are 3 solutions that would work perfectly to solve my problem:
1. Have the GPU automatically stop throttling after it cools down somewhat and return the GPU to its stock speed
2. Raise the thermal threshold to around 80 degrees, which as far as i can tell is still an acceptable temperature level for a laptop GPU
3. Throttle the GPU by less than half when the thermal threshold is reached, since throttling by nearly half the GPU’s speed takes the temps down to ~50 degrees, which is overkill (I saw this was possible while researching, but i couldnt find the setting in my BIOS)
Any of these would be great! Sadly I can’t seem to find a way to implement any of them.

(and I turned the games settings all the way down, which lets me play at 30-40 fps again, but is a disappointing after seeing the game on medium/high settings)

SOLUTION!!!
MSI Afterburner allows me to basically pre-throttle my GPU to about 80% of its capacity before my system can throttle it to 40% (which was WAYYY overkill). Temps stay nice and steady at 70 degrees and the game looks great, thank for the input!
